“Now, everything I do, I do because I want to. And I believe the best is yet to come.” (Giovanni,1). When one has finally reached the point in their life where they have achieved every goal and overcame every obstacle then they have earned a fulfilled life. Nikki Giovanni attests to being optimistic and aspiring. In Giovanni’s poem Choices, she expresses the choices that are to be made in everyones lives. The poem Choices was published shortly after her father’s death. In the period, Giovanni began to have an epiphany with her own life and choices. She discovered how one must sustain an optimistic attitude. Also, she extended on the idea that accepting one’s current situation will take one to greater lengths. Furthermore, when Giovanni wrote the poem she was experiencing a tragic shift in her adult life. The tragedy was unexpected and Giovanni was not aware how her preceding choices would impact the continuation of her life. Giovanni wrote the poem choices to emphasize the process of life’s unexpected and hated experiences. Giovanni discusses accepting the situations and growing …show more content…
In the third stanza, Giovanni states “If I can't have what I want . . . then my job is to want what I’ve got and be satisfied that at least there is something more to want.” (Givanni,1). After accepting the situation for what it is, Giovanni begins to compromise. Compromise “is a basic negotiation process in which both parties give up something that they want in order to get something else they want more. Compromises usually occur in win-lose situations -- when there is a fixed pie to be divided up, and whatever one side gets, the other side loses.” (Spangler,1). According to Spangler, compromising involves sacrificing one possession for another. Also, the reward for sacrificing will be greater than what was given up. In this case, compromise is negotiating between oneself and the decisions to be
The story of Giovanni and Lusanna has a lot more content then what the title portrays it to be. What I mean by that is that it is entirely based on the factual account of what happened
Even though a culture has gone through drastic time should society be ashamed or willing to embrace? Nikki Giovanni, a poet and civil rights activists, wrote the poem Ego-Tripping which was published in 1972. The poem is about how the speaker speaks on her origin showing the readers her strength and power to embrace the culture she holds which is African-American. Nikki Giovanni establishes this by making herself a goddess who holds all these accomplishments. For example, conceiving a daughter named Nefertiti meaning beautiful woman, and Nikki is proud of how confident, and powerful she has become.
Giovanni della Casa, an aristocrat (nobility), someone that possesses rank and privileges. Lusanna was an artisan woman that was less wealthy and powerful. Finally, a woman stood up against the prevailing men of Florence to be recognized that love and marriage can coexist between the poor and wealthy, “one woman’s struggle to gain a measure of personal independence in a male-dominate world (93). Although, Lusanna was married, she caught Giovanni’s attention and they pursued one another. As time passed on they fell in love with each other, with Giovanni promising to marry Lusanna.
In Nikki Giovanni's poem, “Walking Down Park” Giovanni talks about things that used to be on the land of New York that is no longer there as well as, things that could have been there but didn’t have the chance. Giovanni begins the poem by saying “walking down park / amsterdam / or columbus,” these three names are streets located in New York, which is how the reader learns about the setting of this poem. Giovanni then asks “do you ever stop / to think what it looked like / before it was an avenue.” This is the first instance where Giovanni reflects on what things used to be like before New York became a large city. While Giovanni doesn’t dig deep into this first thought of the past, she makes it apparent that things have changed.
Julia Alvarez, in her poem “’Poetry Makes Nothing Happen’?”, writes that poems do play a role in people’s lives. She supports her idea by using relateable examples of how poems might change someone’s life. Her first example is simple, poetry can entertain someone on long drives. This does not only aply to long dirves however, Alvarez uses this to show that poetry does not have to have a big influence on someone’s life, instead it can affect a person in the smallest of ways, such as entertainment. The second example describes poetry comforting someone after the loss of a loved one.
“Nikki-Rosa” Poem Analysis In the poem “Nikki- Rosa,” Nikki Giovanni writes with diction and imagery to prove that’s she had a happy childhood in spite of her family’s hardships. Giovanni creates a poem, that although short in words, provides a lasting effect on the reader. Giovanni’s creative use of language and descriptive words, the distinction of black culture from white culture, and memories of average times that made her childhood unique and happy made this poem distinct and exceptional. Giovanni frequently references to her happy childhood in her poem using words and phrases that create an image in your mind showing you that her childhood was in fact a happy one.
Through the poem, Giovanni reiterates the phrase, “We are Virginia Tech,” and that is a representation of how if nothing else they all have each other. That phrase brings unity to every single Virginia Tech student and alumni. Nikki Giovanni uses strong rhetorical appeals such as
1. When I first began reading this piece of work I knew I was going to enjoy it! The reason for this was because it reminded me of Romeo and Juliet! I also realized that this story was told in the third person through an unknown person as the narrator. I also realized that towards the middle it got a bit confusing for me that sometimes I had to take a minute and go back to assure I understood everything.
“Choices” Nikki Giovanni is a strong woman who expresses her emotions through the words she write. With every stanza or line that she wrote there was a significant meaning behind it. Giovanni used her words as a window to speak and inspire. This poem entitled “Choices” by Nikki Giovanni was written after her father’s death. Giovanni was very distraught by the sudden death of her father.
Giovanni’s Room Love is a funny thing, it doesn’t always turn out the way we want it too and we can’t choose who we love. The main theme of James Baldwin’s story “Giovanni’s Room” is that love is difficult, scary, and not always what you expect. Although many people thrive on the love they feel for someone, David finds it to be a terrifying and confusing thing. In “Giovanni’s Room” David is reflecting on how he found love when he less expected it and was afraid, saddened, and even a little ashamed by it.
The author makes sure to include many times that Giovanni's
This poem expresses what the author expects to have but not achieving it (Applebee 420). In Giovanni's works she rages over family love, loneliness, and frustration (PoetryFoundation 1). As demonstrated in “Choices” she is frustrated as she can not achieve what she wants in result she goes along with what society wants her to do. According to the ¨Author Study Nikki Giovanni¨ it states ¨Unfortunately, Giovanni´s independent spirit got her into trouble with the university authorities almost immediately¨ (Applebee 405). This displays the need for independence as is seen in ¨Choices¨. Needless to say “Choices” authenticates the connection with Giovanni's life and
It is telling that the physical space of Giovanni’s room feels detached from the rest of the world, as David is detatching his sexualtiy from the rest of the world. In a sense, David is hiding his sexuality in Giovanni’s room, which lets the room become repressive. While it could be a safe haven, where David could be free in his homosexuality as “time flowed past indifferently above us, hours and days had no meaning” (75), David let’s the indifference of time and the sea of Giovanni’s room suffocate him. It is interesting that David reiterates Giovanni’s point, that time does not care about how one spends their life; as time is indifferent. However, this has a negative connotation for David, because he is still unable to accept his sexuality.
This literary analysis will analyze James Baldwin’s intention of locating the “outsider” in the context of homosexuality and African American expatriation in the novel Giovanni’s Room. The article by Abur-Rahman (2007) defines Baldwin’s intention of locating a place for the “outsider” through the context of homosexuality and African American expatriation in European life. Baldwin’s own experiences as an American exile in France are defined through his own identity as a homosexual male, but also, as a racial minority seeking a place of sanctuary outside of American culture. Abur-Rahman (2007) defines Baldwin’s intention of depicting the white characters in the novel as a counterpoint to the alienation of homosexuals, as well as the increased burden of racial identity he had to carry in life. Basis of modern science of conflict is studies of German, Austrian, American sociologists of the 20th century: G.Simmel, L. Gumplowicz, D. Smalley, W. Sumner, R. Dahrendorf, Parsons.
