Of mice and men, by John Steinbeck, is a very depressing and imaginative book. He has two different themes that help tie the whole story together, like a recurring situation. The first theme is loneliness; all the characters in one way or another show a sense of loneliness. One character who portrays this the most is Lennie. Lennie has abandonment problems, which when he is alone causes him to be upset and he doesn't know what to do. This in a way portrays Lennie to symbolize a toddler, they whine and throw fits when their parents aren't around. The second theme is isolation; as the story goes on some characters show isolation. This idea could allow the reader to connect these symbolisms to themselves in their own life. Steinbeck's main form of symbolism is how the whole novel symbolizes the Great Depression. This novel was to be set near the time where this historical event took place, and this is portrayed through slim. He is an older man stuck within this time where he is incapable of moving forward in his life, get a job and he is stuck in his house with people who do not care for his well being. Another character who portrays symbolism is Lennie. Lennie is a big man who has a very soft and gentle heart, he never means to do any harm, but somehow always ends up messing something up or hurting. He whines whenever he is alone, especially when George isn't around. Lennie in a way, is a symbolization of a toddler or a young, child; he shows how children could mean to do no harm at all, but with such a lack of knowledge end up ruining or breaking things. Lennie also, cries like a child and is easily offended; when george leaves lennie isn't sure what to do, and when people talk about how he isn't going to get his dream, he throws a fit and gets angry. For Lennie’s archetype, his character represents innocence. In the story, Lennie is always in need to pet some kind of animal. His want of constant comfort from an animal is a childish quality for a grown man to have. This childish quality makes Lennie’s character have the innocence of a child no older than eight years old.

John Steinbeck 's makes Lennie very strong, but not very wise in the book. Lennie is not the brightest in the pack meaning that he’s not very smart, but he has a soft charisma and he actually likes soft things too. George doesn’t really have confidence in Lennie for instance on the ranch, George wouldn’t let Lennie talk because George didn’t want Lennie to miss getting the opportunity.

John Steinbeck shows this through the life of George and Lennie and all their trials and tribulations they faced in their life. In the book “Of Mice and Men”, we see the bond George and Lennie have and the goal they share that they try to reach together. George constantly complains about the hassle he has to put up with because of Lenny, the most important character.
Lennie’s puppy symbolizes the power the strong have over the weak. On multiple occasions Lennie kills creatures smaller than him, this is because he has more strength than them. However others have more mental strength than Lennie. Specifically, Crooks can easily upset and take control over Lennie by bringing up George, this is because Crooks is more intelligent than Lennie and was able to figure out his weak spot. By giving Lennie a lack of intelligence Steinbeck develops the theme that the more strength a person has the more power they have over others.
Throughout the novella, Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck's use of motif reveals the theme, isolation can create loneliness and pain. Crooks and Lennie were in Crook's room and Candy was looking for Lennie. Crooks said IRRITIABLY, "You can come in if you want." (Steinbeck 74). The motif, Crooks likes to be alone, helps support the theme, isolation can create loneliness and pain, because when Candy appears in the doorframe of Crooks room he gets very irritated and tense.
In the novel Of Mice and Men, Lennie is a complex character who elicits both sympathy and frustration due to his lack of understanding. Lennie's actions, though unintentional, have serious consequences, and the question whether his punishment was fair has been debated since the book was released. Despite Lennie's innocence and mental disability, his punishment in Of Mice and Men was not fair. Lennie's actions were a result of his mental disability. He has a mental disorder that affects his ability to understand the consequences of his actions.
Lennie represents as a strong muscular man with a mind of four-year old boy . George is the caretaker of Lennie, George can't go anywhere without Lennie doing something wrong. Lennie likes soft things sometimes Lennie is stronger than he thinks ¨give me that mouse! , I didn't mean to kill it George¨ ( Steinbeck 4). Lennie refuses to give up the mouse Aunt Clara ¨ give you a rubber mouse and you wouldn't want nothing to do with it¨(Steinbeck 5).
We all may have had the feeling of loneliness and isolation, wanting companionship feeling abandonment. The three characters Crooks, George, and Lennie crusade dealing with own ways of loneliness and isolation. Crooks has no one that likes him because he’s black, Lennie struggles mentally and George struggles with always having to care for him. They all can’t decide whether it is that they want to be alone or not.
Because of this she has lost her social companions, and her partner for life. She later loses her son due to the pearl which only makes her more alone in her life. Lennie is a character from Of Mice and Men who is ostracized due to his mental disabilities. Lennie suffers from a learning disability that leaves him in the mental state of a Child with a body of a full grown man. In a world full of grown men, a child does not fit in at all.
