In the nonfiction article by Lane Wallace, “Is Survival Selfish”, she experienced different reactions that came from other people in an unanticipated crash. “ I remember reading the account of one woman who was in an airliner that crashed on landing. People were frozen or screaming, but nobody was moving toward the emergency exits, even as smoke began to fill the cabin.” (Wallace 2). Therefore, this quote indicates that the people that were on the ship were really frightened and thought their lives were coming to an end.

Throughout our lives, we are faced with difficult situations, and possibly even life or death situations. As humans, our instinct is to take these difficult situations and find the best way to get over them. Sometimes these situations and predicaments get so difficulty that there is no way out of it. When this happens, people will do things that they would never dream of doing in order to survive. In history, we can see many incidents where people have gone to extremes just to survive these difficulty situations, such as; the people of the Donner Party, those associated with the Andes Flight Disaster, and the crew members of the Luxborough Galley.

People begin to have extreme courage and strength when there are accidents. We get scared for others and dive right into help them. Some people will risk their lives to help people in need of serious help. Just like Donald Usher and Eugene Windsor, the helicopter crew, that risked their lives every time they landed in the water in Roger Rosenblatt ’s essay The Man in the Water.

When the boys get stranded on this island they must take care of themselves and try to get rescued. As the boys climb this mountain to get home they face new challenges which resulted them to descend into savagery. With these new challenges of killing the pig for the first time, them breaking the conch, and deaths of Simon and Piggy they to descend into savagery causing them to lose their innocence. After the boys crash landed on the island it was only a matter of time before the boys descend into savagery because lack of leadership, need for survival and loss of innocence. Their first goal on the island was to have fun and get rescued but throughout their stay, they get further away from that.

Civil to Savage In the book, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, the boys start off being civil and got to being savage. The boy’s savage and immoral behavior, in my opinion, should be blamed on biological factors, rather than the environment. Many people have probably died because of saving their family or almost getting killed. In the movie “ John Q,” the father of a young boy who needed a heart transplant quickly because he was at the verge of dying, so was willing to take his own life so the son could have his heart and live. The father actually had some people hostage at a hospital to get his son 's name on the list for the heart transplant, he went to an extreme to keep his son alive. At that moment he thought that was his only choice he didn 't think about the outcomes of the situation, whether he would get killed by the cops or any of the hostages would hurt him. In the novel Lord of the Flies, it is obvious that the character Jack is the savage compared to all the other boys on the island. Jack is the cause of all the arguments and death that will later occur on the island. Many of the boys on the island are scared of Jack when he acts cruel and selfish.
