In late 1942, the US decided it was time for them to take action in the war and do something to stop it. Three years prior the scientific community some how discovered that the German scientists learned how to split an uranium atom. Everyone was soon scared at the possibility of German scientists using that huge amount of energy to produce a bomb capable of massive destruction. Our well known scientists Albert Einstein and Enrico Fermi escaped from nazis. They both agreed that the president of the United States needed to know about the dangers that the Germans could cause.

World War II seemed close to an end in May of 1945 and Japan was not down yet, and still fighting. America faced a hard decision: how to send the war against Japan as quickly as possible and with the least casualties possible. Since 1939, America had been working on the Manhattan Project, a project aiming to create nuclear bombs. A single bomb could destroy an entire city and America yielded that power against Japan. Using incendiary bombs, 67 entire sections of Japanese cities were burnt out.

During World War II, the United States discovered that the energy of the atom could be used in a new form of bomb. However, the Germans also discovered this, meaning that it would be a race to actually complete the weapon. The U.S. knew it needed to act fast and so three facilities were created for the development of the weapon in Washington, New Mexico, and Tennessee. The plants in Tennessee were based in almost the middle of nowhere.

It was August, 1939. United States President Franklin Roosevelt was handed a letter addressed from Albert Einstein. The purpose of this letter was to inform the President that the Germans supposedly discovered the secrets to developing nuclear weaponry and to urge the President to do the same (1). This letter changed the history of our world, because from this letter, the Manhattan Project was born. With their access had necessary raw materials and knowledge of the splitting of the uranium atom, they had the industrial capacity to produce an atomic bomb(“Manhattan Project”2014). The atomic bomb would eventually become the turning point of weaponry during World War II. On October 11, 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt received a letter from Albert Einstein about the splitting of the uranium atom which could be beneficial in developing weapons for America during World War II.

Throughout WWII, the US, Germany, the Soviet Union, and Japan were in an arms race for an advantage in the war through an atomic bomb. The US had developed the atomic bomb first throughout the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was a secret project that FDR started after Einstein sent him a letter warning the US that Germany was developing a nuclear weapon in 1939.
