Manifest Destiny involved many groups of people, but six of the main categories are the mountain men, travellers on the Oregon Trail, pioneer women, cowboys, Native Americans, and the Miners, also known as the 49ers. The mountain men were men who lived in the Rocky Mountains, and made livings as trappers who sold goods such as beavers pelts to people back East and Europe. There were over 350,000 people on the trail, and most of which were families with children. This took place mainly in the 1840s and 1860s. A subgroup of the Oregon travellers were the Pioneer women. They had to move along with the long distances each day, and at the same time cook, clean, and take care of children. To add to the struggle, one in five of these women were …show more content…
a belief that was widely held that the destiny of American settlers was to expand and move across the continent to spread their traditions and their institutions, while at the same time enlightening more primitive nations” ("Manifest Destiny." The image shows Manifest Destiny through use of saturation of colours, light and dark, detail, and symbolism. The painting was called American progress to show how the Americans had a god forsaken right to the land. This painting is displaying how the people are pushing with this idea of holiness, but are in the process moving the darkness, or the native people and creatures, out of their homes. The light seems to be spreading forward, and the darkness receding farther and farther away to demonstrate the “cleansing” of the land. The use of shading of the painting, along with sa was quite interesting because the half with the settlers was vibrant and colourful, and as it moved towards the right, the painting becomes darker, with less intensity. It’s most likely supposed to display good and evil, the light, happiness, and the dark, cold, depression. The native Americans are displayed as vile and dark, something that needs to be moved. We already knew that during the 1800s, the Native Americans were being moved to reservations. This painting shows them being moved farther and farther west, away from the settlements, in what was called the “Trail of Tears”. However, the painting seems to be creating an implication that the Natives simply disappeared, and that their action was justified and necessary to create a land of flawless perfection. It is likely that John
Manifest Destiny was a phrase that was made up by journalist John L. O’sullivan back in 1844. The United States wanted to push westward to the frontier such as Texas, California, and Oregon. The reason behind Manifest Destiny was to expand to provide new places to live and jobs. Manifest Destiny is the belief that the Americans could extend themselves from coast to coast. The way Americans conquered the new land were removing the Native Americans from their land.
In 1845, the idea of Manifest Destiny was created by John O’Sullivan. Manifest Destiny continued to have a large impact on the development of the U.S. Furthermore, Manifest Destiny helped unite the U.S. through the common goal to expand, however, it further developed the split on slavery. Documents one, four, and six show that Manifest destiny led to a common goal to expand westward, specifically, unifying whig and democratic parties to a common objective. The first document was from a Whig journal and it is clear that he was for expansion,” the natural progress of events will undoubtedly give us that province[California]”(document one).
Manifest destiny is about what they wanted to happen. Their belief that they were fated to expand the U.S, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean was the manifest destiny! It happened. They worked hard to do it and deserved it after the hard work and efforts. 6.
The Manifest Destiny is a movement that justified American expansion with a sense of mission and purpose. The American expansion led to the adding of Texas and Oregon to the union, but also created wars with Mexico. As Americans moved west, many of the Indians did not appreciate the expansion and were either forced to leave or fight for their area leading to many massacres and wars. More specifically, Americans wanted to grow from "shining sea to shining sea" and take control of the entirety of North America. They would also fight any force that would attempt to stop them.
Manifest Destiny is the belief of the nineteenth century that America was destined by God to expand westward. The author of Our Country: Its Possible Future and Its Present Crisis believed that God established Anglo-Saxons as the superior people whose purpose was to spread Christianity. (Doc B) This idea of spreading a superior culture or religion has been a motive for expansion for decades before this. Despite this support for expansionism, there were those who were against it.
The whole painting is in black and white which gives it a lugubrious tone. The angle of the portrait allows the audience to see the facial expression of each person in the painting. Both African American males have a sort of grin on their face, which shows that the painting is in favor of them. The communist, KKK member is depicted as a skeleton that is weak and being destroyed. The man that is stopping the communist member from hanging the little boy has a banner on that says CRC, which is a representation of the civil rights congress standing up for the rights of African Americans during that time.
Manifest Destiny is a unique, yet mysterious fundamental series of events in American history. No other country’s history contains such an eventful history as the United States. Amy Greenberg’s book, Manifest Destiny and American Territorial Expansion, provides documented evidence that settlers believed they were destined for expansion throughout the continent. In other words, many religious settlers believed that it was a call from God for the United States to expand west. On the other hand, people believed that Manifest Destiny vindicated the war against Mexico.
The painting “American Progress,” shows indians leaving their land and settlers behind them who seem to be pushing the indians away. There is also a woman with wings holding wire that is connected to power poles. She can be seen as a symbol of westward expansion because she is bringing power towards the west. The illustrator seems to be supportive of expansion, and believes the americans wanted to obtain all the land they could. The
The United States exploration of their new territory was justified through the idea of Manifest destiny; the idea that the United States was destined to expand and spread their influence to the west through any means necessary. This way of thinking is what caused America to imperialize and drive the Natives out of the west and into lands that were not their homes or to their deaths. Manifest Destiny caused the American people to charge through the west without abandon and thought, these actions are justified by John Louis O’Sullivan, who coined the phrase “Manifest Destiny,” when he states, “... the right of our manifest destiny to over spread and to possess the whole of the continent which Providence has given us for the development of the great experiment of liberty…” his statement was published and resonated with the American people and the sense of nationalism that they felt toward their country. They felt it was their duty to spread American ideals and culture to those who did not already possess it so that the west would be able to join in The United States idealistic superiority, despite the fact that other people in the west had developed their own cultures and ideas. For instance, many native tribes did not regard their beliefs and spirituality as a religion, but as a part of their being and as a reasoning toward their habits and mannerisms; when
Manifest Destiny is the fate of the US to occupy all land between the 2 oceans, the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. The idea of Manifest Destiny was created in 1845 and in 1853 the United States acquired all 48 contiguous states to fulfill Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny was first used in the 1840s. The people who supported Manifest Destiny are called Expansionists. The United States has achieved Manifest Destiny for many various reasons.
Manifest destiny is something that went down in the early 19000ths. It was an expansion on the U.S To basically expand the states of the U.S.American continents was both justified and inevitable. It started in 1840. But it was mostly recognized in the 19000ths. It made states like california join the union.
“Once we became an independent people it was as much a law of nature that this [control of all of North America] should become our pretension as that the Mississippi should flow to the sea” –John Quincy Adams (Henretta, p. 384). In the 1840s, Americans had a belief that God destined for them to expand their territory all the way westward to the Pacific Ocean. This idea was called Manifest Destiny. In the nineteenth century, Americans were recognized for coming together and building up one another for one cause: westward expansion.
In the 19th Century, there were strong supporters of the ideology of Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny was basically the belief of expansion by settlers expanding all over America because god supposedly destined the Americans for expansions by their resources. This resulted for the Americans to find a modern mode of transportation that would make traveling from the east to the west coast easier. This resulted in a mega construction known as the Transcontinental Railroad. The railroad not only helps with transportation but with trading.
New Nationalism vs. New Freedom In the 1912 election for president there were four candidates, two were Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Both had reforms that they placed as the center of their campaigns. Roosevelt’s reform was New Nationalism and Wilson’s was New Freedom.
Manifest Destiny was the term used by John O’Sullivan to describe America’s desire to expand West due to reasons including both the vast amount of unclaimed land and the opportunities Americans wanted to explore. During this time, Americans believed that it was their God-given right to expand West, and therefore they were entitled to push away any groups that were in their way. Due to the mindset that the Americans could do as they pleased with the groups of people who got in their way, Manifest Destiny affected many groups of people, including the American Indians and Slaves, and continued to build up the preexisting tension between the North and South. One of the groups of people affected greatly by Manifest Destiny were the Native Americans. Manifest Destiny affected the American Indians by spreading foreign diseases to them as they moved Westward, through the Native American territory.
