Intro-hook: Imagine your loved one unexpectedly commits suicide. Your mother, your father, your sister, or your brother. A mental illness such as depression can lead to someone taking their life. The scariest part is that whole time you didn't realize they had those thoughts. But the problem is this happens every 40 seconds around the world and we don't realize it. These problems could be avoided if we learned how to take action in this type of situation. Thesis Statement: My three arguments on why mental health should be talked about more often are how mental illnesses affect Canada, how the government can solve this issue, and how you can help. body-paragraph one: Mental illnesses affect Canada deeply through lost of job days, money, and …show more content…
One huge organization is Bell Lets Talk. They started in 2010 and every January they donate 5 cents for every call and text made from their network. Since 2010 Bell Lets Talk have donated 100 million dollars to mental health initiatives in Canada. They are trying to make a stigma-free country and it expanded worldwide. An additional charity is wear your label. Wear your label was made by Kayley who battled an eating disorder and Kyle who lives with anxiety and ADHD. They both reached out to each other and opened up about their illnesses, which led them to their idea, to makes clothes that open up the conversation about mental health. 10 percent of their profits goes to mental health initiatives. This clothing line has made some great change to break the stigma. The last organization I would like to mention is the bses campaign. Bses stands for break the silence, end the stigma. Bses was made in April 2014 in Nova Scotia. It was made by, now co-presidents Cassandra and Stephanie. They are both best friends and they wanted to end the stigma. Like wear your label, bses makes clothing to break the stigma. Donating to organizations help the mental health initiatives. In conclusion by learning about how you can help someone with a mental illness, you can save a life. Looking back at my three arguments, how mental illnesses affect Canada, how the government can solve this issue,
I see the value in contributing time and work to an organization that helps others in need. Many people depend on food donations and the service and work provided by many people of the organization are making positive impact in the
One of the organizations I am proud to donate to is the United Service Organizations, or USO. Since 1941, the USO has supported troops at home and abroad. With the intent to lift the spirits of troops and their family members, the organization endeavors to provide a “home away from home” feeling for all the families dealing with the rigors of serving overseas. The organization became famous for its Camp Shows over the years--with some occurring in active war zones. To make this all possible, the USO relies heavily on private donations.
For the past two years, I have been involved in the Carmax Cares community service month. We provided assistance to the Foster Care Support Foundation in Roswell, Georgia. This organization sends out gently worn closes, shoes and other necessities to support foster care providers in the state of Georgia. We packaged items to be sent out and organized their warehouse inventory. On campus I am an active member of SABAC as well as the Georgia Club.
"There’s no easier way to share your story and attract support." is the GoFundMe slogan. Many people face unfortunate circumstances and tragic. These unfortunate situations, quite often need money for surgeries, burials or housing for reconstruction, closure, or repayment. Recipients redeemed from some losses endure their hardship forever remember the gracious of people from all walks of life who care. One person who uses the GoFundMe Campaign is Avi Weisfogel.
My mother has worked for Children’s Mercy for nine years, and it has been a huge blessing to hear about all of the wonderful things that Children’s Mercy does for our community. As a result of Children’s Mercy being a not for profit hospital, their funding must come from sources outside of their patients. One of the biggest fundraisers that Children’s Mercy conducts is called The Big
HEALTH CARE SPENDING AND SOCIAL SERVICE SPENDING IN CANADA Introduction Health care spending is a major issue in Canada. According to Smith, Mitton and Kershaw(2016)total public health expenditure in Canada has increased significantly. In terms of Gross Domestic Product(GDP)public health care expenditures increased from 6.4 percent in 1995 to 8 percent in 2010. This places Canada among the top spenders on health care among developed countries(p. e130).
Of my many volunteer and paid extra-curricular activities, the most important to me is the National Art Honor Society, which extends artistic activities to my community. We organize two school events: the Festival of Trees and the Talent Competition. The Festival of Trees is an event when every school club can choose to donate and decorate a tree that we set up. All of the money raised goes to an organization of our choice. For the last 4 years, we have donated to Street Grace, which benefits the fight against human trafficking, especially in the Metro Atlanta area.

In my freshman year, I made a choice to relinquish some of my social life and replace that time giving back to my community. I joined a non-profit organization called the Volunteer Corp. We spent our time at food banks, park clean-ups, and even hosting local events. This experience left a lasting impression on me in many ways; however, one experience changed my perspective on life and serve as a constant reminder of how the smallest contribution to others can be the most powerful. St. Joseph University, in Philadelphia, held an event called Hand in Hand. It was an event dedicated to raising awareness for people with physical and/or developmental disabilities.
In my community, I donate to St Jude’s Hospital for cancer research. Almost half of my family has had some kind of cancer. Donating to St. Jude’s Hospital helps me give back to people who have already lost their lives, are undergoing treatment, or anyone who might have cancer in the future. In my 7th grade year, another student and I raised money to help find a cure for Type One Diabetes. The money that we raised went to an organization called “Beyond Type One” so that they can use it to perform scientific experiments to find a cure.
The Toys for Tots fundraiser is a pretty cool organization, they get together and parents that aren 't as well off as others come in and sign their
Growing up off reservation or native community has ostracized me from ancestral background and the core part of who I am, but I do know their struggle. The poverty, lack of education and worse; the mental illness. Oddly enough it affects first nation people whether they are in a reservation or not. In my experience, mental illness is not treated properly or acknowledged in time. It leads to substance abuse for small fixes-speed instead of adderall for severe ADHD-
The impact of mental health on today's population is widespread and immense, but is it possible to represent the hardships of depression and anxiety comedically? Various examples are displayed in Jenny Lawson’s biography, Furiously Happy. Currently, mental illness is portrayed in a rather somber and grey light, especially, depression and social anxiety. This belief is actively challenged by Jenny Lawson, an author who suffers from depression and social anxiety. As discussed in Furiously Happy, Jenny Lawson portrays her mental illnesses by using real-life stories, where she explains why she shows these illnesses in this way.
I did my Senior Project with Ireland Miller, and together we worked with Logan’s Promise. Logan’s Promise is an organization that spreads awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving. It was formed when a drunk driver was driving the wrong way on University Parkway and hit a car, filled with three Reitz students, head on. Two were badly injured and my brother, Logan Brown, was killed. From that horrific event Logan’s Promise was formed.
What are Psychiatric Prisons Psychiatric hospitals, otherwise known as mental hospitals, mental health units, mental asylums or simple asylums, are hospitals or wards that specialize in the treatment of serious mental illness, such as clinical depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Psychiatric prisons are the same idea except they are designed for people with mental illnesses who have committed a crime of some sort. If a person is found NCR (not criminally responsible) then they are sent to Psychiatric prisons instead of normal prisons. Inside psychiatric prisons there are people that are specially trained and have gone to school to help people who are struggling with mental illness. For example a Psychiatrist.
