Chances are, you have heard of Meriwether Lewis whether you know who he is or not. Meriwether Lewis is mostly known for traveling out west with William Clark, Sacagawea, and York. This expedition helped him to become closer with the president, Thomas Jefferson, and become his assistant and friend. This relationship eventually led to him becoming the governor of the Louisiana Territory and may have also led to his death. On the night of his death, Lewis was traveling back to D.C. to take care of some debts when he stopped at Grinder’s Stand to rest. Little did he know, later that night he would die due to a gunshot to the back of the head and stomach. No one was ever found guilty of murdering Lewis and it was never proven that he killed himself. Another thing learned from the autopsy is that Lewis was shot in the back of the head. If this was a suicide, he would have to awkwardly twist his hand to shoot himself in the back of the head. Lastly, multiple sources including Decoded that it would be nearly impossible for Lewis to survive the first shot to the head, let alone, shoot himself again in the stomach. This is some proof that he could have been shot by the Grinders because he was staying at their house and this evidence shows that he most likely did not shoot himself. Meriwether Lewis Meriwether Lewis was born on August 18, 1774. In 1801 he was asked by President Thomas Jefferson to be his private secretary. Thomas Jefferson made him a deal by making him a commander of an expedition , which followed with the co-commander William Clark. When Lewis went on this trip he was asked by Jefferson to gather information on the new plants and animals that they discovered.
Thomas Jefferson had just bought the Louisiana Purchase and was extremely curious about the culture, landscape, and people living in that region. He sent a letter to Meriwether Lewis, his private secretary, asking him to discover the lands that he had just bought. Lewis took the responsibility and took along with him his close friend. Later on, he became friends with Meriwether Lewis while they both served in 1795. They year after that he was resigned from the army to become manager of his family’s estate. The Emmett Till case should be taught in 2018 as not just a murder that triggered the civil rights movement, but as a case that still reflects the injustices that African American men face in the American Justice system. Not only should Emmitt till’s murder reflect the injustices in America today, but retaught since new information has recently surfaced which shows a different side to the whole case. He had done militia training, and that was used on the expedition because it made Lewis strong, hardworking, and used to leading other people. On this expedition he was also good at noticing details of plants and animals, and using the limited tools available to navigate through this unfamiliar country. Thomas Jefferson’s Instructions to Meriwether Lewis discussed the appointment of Lewis as commander of the expedition, gave specific details of the purpose of the exploration, and provided directions for Lewis to follow when carrying out the trip. Thomas Jefferson carefully selected his personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis, to be the commander of the Expedition and trusted that he would be able to perform the tasks assigned to him. Jefferson requested that an abundant amount of precise notes be taken and that they be protected at all costs. He was interested in learning about the people occupying the land, their culture, the ecosystems, and the land.
