Meriwether Lewis Undaunted Courage

Meriwether Lewis lost a parent at a young age and inherited their wealth little did he know that he was on his way to a much greater and successful future. Early in life, Meriwether Lewis learned good comes out of even the worst of things. Meriwether Lewis was born on August, 18 ,1774 in Albemarle County, Virginia to Lucy Meriwether and William Lewis (Harper). Shortly after Lewis’s birth, his father went off to serve in the military (Harper).

How to go on a Successful Expedition Cabeza de Vaca, one of the world's greatest explorers. It's amazing how he was able to survive with little tools and help. Cabeza started his expedition in 1525 in seville, he later crashed in Galveston Island, Texas. He and 3 other people had to be able to survive in the new world, with nothing other than themselves and other little resources. Cabeza de Vaca was able to survive seeing that he knew a bit about the Indian tribes and how to speak their language(s), He also knew how to heal wounds and other such things, and most of all he knew how to survive in the wilderness.

If anything affected me, it was a stronger desire to see them.” Continental Army soldier, Joseph Plum Martin shares his experience of the Revolutionary War through his book, Ordinary Courage. The bravery, courage, and patriotism expressed throughout the novel shows off Martin’s immense strength and perseverance. The soldiers fought through the trials of starvation, disease, lack of supplies, and vicious battles against the British troops.

Lewis Sage narrowly avoided my grip once before the incident. He was fighting the Confederates on the battlefield, and I had already collected a total of twenty-three souls. Just as a confederate soldier aimed his gun towards Lewis, a Union soldier dove in front of him, taking the bullet straight into his chest. This man was Albert Willman. Albert Willman died in Lewis Sage’s arms.

Conspiracy murder, suicide or Murder Meriwether Lewis had people that were jealous of his success and position as governor of Louisiana Territory. He was traveling to Washington to resolve unpaid bills from his governorship and to publish his famous journals. Meriwether’s partner was William Clark. There was also a rumor that he had secret documents that may have implicated others in treason. Meriwether Lewis died at the Grinder’s stand at the age of 35.

The death of Meriwether Lewis still remains a great mystery. For 200 years, it was claimed to be a suicide, but many other sources of evidence proves this wrong. He was secretary for Thomas Jefferson. He was also the number one hero in the country. He was even named the governor of Louisiana!

Courage The dictionary definition of courage is “strength in the face of pain of grief.” Throughout the novel The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, the common idea of courage is expressed with different meanings as each character interprets courage differently.

“Wisdom is knowing what to do next, skill is knowing how to do it, and virtue is doing it (author anonymous).” Virtue is defined by Webster Online Dictionary as a conformity to a standard of right, a particular moral excellence. As Christians, we are instructed to stand apart from this dark and ominous world, to be a light in the darkness. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, acceptable, and perfect will of God.” The question then becomes, is averting evil enough to generate a virtuous person or must it be an active choice?

Courage isn’t something people born with, it takes time, mistakes and understanding, and Charlie had plenty of that over the summer of 1965. Jasper Jones is a mysterious and suspenseful book by Craig Silvey. It starts with Charlie, a teenage boy, lying in bed reading Pudd’nhead Wilson, one of his dad’s old books, when somebody knocks on his bedroom window unexpectedly. That somebody was Jasper, and he needed his help. He took Charlie deep into the woods only to find something truly terrifying.

“Meriwether Lewis was great at writing in his journal and collected samples of plants and animals he encountered.” (biography.com) As Lewis traveled to the Northwest territory he would collect different items to mark the different places that he went to, so he could remember his journey. “Lewis also helped his group by leading them threw braved dangerous waters and harsh weather and endured hunger, illness, injury and fatigue.” (The texts reads on biography.)

The Alaskan Bush is one of the hardest places to survive without any assistance, supplies, skills, and little food. Jon Krakauer explains in his biography, Into The Wild, how Christopher McCandless ventured into the Alaskan Bush and ultimately perished due to lack of preparation and hubris. McCandless was an intelligent young man who made a few mistakes but overall Krakauer believed that McCandless was not an ignorant adrenalin junkie who had no respect for the land. Krakauer chose to write this biography because he too had the strong desire to discover and explore as he also ventured into the Alaskan Bush when he was a young man, but he survived unlike McCandless. Krakauer’s argument was convincing because he gives credible evidence that McCandless was not foolish like many critics say he was.

The graphic memoir, March, is a biography about Congressman John Lewis’ young life in rural Alabama which provides a great insight into lives of black families in 1940s and 50s under Jim Crow and segregation laws. March opens with a violent march at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, which the gruesome acts later became known as “Bloody Sunday,” during this march, 600 peaceful civil rights protestors were attacked by the Alabama state troopers for not listening to their commands. The story then goes back and forth depicts Lewis growing up in rural Alabama and President Obama’s inauguration in 2009. This story of a civil rights pioneer, John Lewis, portrays a strong influence between geography, community, and politics. The correlation between these pillars of March is that they have to coexist with other in order for John Lewis to exist that the world knows today.
