Metellus Support Of Brutus In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar

The Selfishness and jealousy of Brutus and Cassius identified as the reasoning behind the killing of Caesar. Prior to the killing Brutus notably honors Caesar in a special way. He comes to realization that the ghost of Caesar payed him a visit as a sign and it did not take long for Brutus to understand the message given to him. Brutus determines that the way to prove how much regret he carried towards his actions, he would need to plunge into his sword and end his life. Before Brutus does so, he shows his sorrow for Caesar by saying, “Caesar, you can rest now.

“Brutus did not know if he would go through with the murder” “How was he to kill a man he loved? A man who had loved him like a son and may even be his own true father”. Brutus doesn’t think he will be able to kill a man who he and all of Rome loves. Caesar was more like a god than he was a man. Admittedly, there are some people who believe that Caesar was to powerful and needed to be taken out.

Brutus tried to persuade Antony that Caesar wanted to be king. Antony proved him wrong by bringing up Caesar rejecting the crown three times. Caesar’s intentions was not to be king or he would have already been king. Another reason they wanted to stab him was because they thought he was too ill. Even though he was ill he was still doing a good job as the general of Rome.

Brutus killed Caesar out of honor because he felt it was the best thing to do for the people of Rome. Brutus only wanted what was best for the people of Rome and the people around him. This can be seen in his speech in Act III, Scene ii, lines 18 through 19, “If then that friend demand why Brutus rose against Caesar, this is my answer: not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more.” Brutus explains that he killed Caesar not out of hate for him but because he felt it was for the good of Rome. Brutus was also an honorable man and the people around him knew that he was.

They believe he was going to take over like a king and once done so his nature would change drastically like a power hungry ruler. That is what resulted in his killing. It was said he made the senate “Worthless” by taking charge and responsibility of helping Rome. However how can a person be committed of a crime like being a power hungry tyrant when he has done nothing of that nature? It was all what if statements the senate were just worried about their power taken away from them, “Brutus was a senator, but his decision to kill Caesar was motivated by no more than petty self-interest”

Brutus has a vision, and he intends it to work out in every way he plans. In a sense he achieves what he wants, and killing Caesar may have been crucial to his short-lived success.

Brutus and the senators had made a plan to kill Caesar. Even though Caesar was his friend, Brutus joins the conspiracyagainst Caesar’s life because he feels that Caesar’s death is better for Rome. Brutus did not want to allow Caesar to rise to power and turn his back onto the people of Rome. Brutus felt like Caesar was being a dictator. “Which, hatched, would as his kind grow mischievous, And kill him in a shell” (2,1,33-34) Similar to how Cady, Janice and Damian made a plan to destroy Regina.

In Act 3 Scene 2 Brutus said during his speech, “If that friend then demands to know why Brutus turned against Caesar, this is my answer: Not because I cared for Caesar less, but because I cared for Rome more”. When Brutus was talking to the conspirators Brutus was going back and forth think if he should help the conspirators kill Julius Caesar. He was going back and forth because he was thinking of the power he could have and could rule Rome. The reason behind Brutus killing Caesar was for the better of Rome. If Brutus would not have killed Caesar, Rome would have turned into a dictatorship, and in turn it would have ruined Rome and all of its people. Brutus did not kill Julius just for the power to rule Rome, he killed Julius to save Rome from Caesar’s dictatorship.

And while Brutus did work in part with other conspirators, which eventually led to him killing Caesar, he did it for a more morally sound reason which was that Caesar was going to cause the downfall of Rome because he was too ambitious, which is ironic because Caesar's death led to a string of unfit leaders, and civil unrest that eventually led to the downfall of the roman empire. Brutus was also focused on preventing corruption. “The name of Cassius honors this corruption,/ And chastisement doth therefore hide his head (IV.iii.15-6)... Remember March, the ides of March remember./ Did not great Julius bleed for justice' sake” (IV.iii.18-9).

Brutus believes that Caesar will do more harm than good to the people, and reap benefits for himself. Brutus has already said this, but had said it in his own words, (II, i, 12-14). When Brutus spoke about his motives to kill Caesar he said, “As he was valiant I / honor him. But, as he was ambitious, I slew him.” (3.2.27-28). Brutus honored Caesar but saw that his ambition has the potential of being very dangerous. He thought that a danger like Caesar could not be left to grow more powerful when there is a solution to the issue now.
