After visiting the Mission Hill area of Boston, it is easy to conclude that a family living in the area could mostly live off of local businesses for their basic needs. Once farmland, Mission Hill now includes hospitals, cheap housing for smaller families and college students, and plenty of local businesses for food. On average, families in the area are left over with $84.13 per week to spend on necessities. If budgeted right, this money could be spent on local businesses that fill the area instead of citizens going outside of Mission Hill to buy from larger corporations. In Mission Hill, most local businesses are food-centered, ranging from Chinese cuisine to small coffee shops. These small restaurants for the most part seem to have reasonable prices for meals; most starting at five dollars. Some even offer family sized meals for a little more money. Another cheap business in the area is the local Mini Mart, where people can buy popular food items such as bread and milk at a low price. However, even though there are many local businesses in the area …show more content…
Although most business owners and citizens in the Mission Hill area started out as Irish Catholics, today more than fifty percent of citizens are non white. Because of this diversity in the area, local businesses in the area are also diverse. It is hard to tell whether or not the majority of business owners live in Mission Hill or commute, but it is likely that some live in the area. Whether or not this is true, the flow of money in and out of the area is greatly affected by this, especially if owners of local businesses are spending their salaries on raw materials outside of Mission Hill. There might be owners that are able to get raw materials from the weekly farmers market that comes to the area, but it depends what business they are running and how much they are able to spend after paying taxes and
There are proposals for plans of action to address this pressing and complicated issue. Current initiatives being discussed in congress focus on creating programs that are economically feasible for larger-scale grocers to move to lesser economically desirable locations at federal level.3 These initiatives entail creating incentivized programs for large grocery companies as a possible solution to combat unequal access to healthy food options in urban and rural communities.3 However, instead the focus should instead shift to local businesses and convenience stores due to their ability to make changes without hurdling the complications of federal law. Providing incentives to local businesses and convenience stores to provide locally grown fruits and vegetables in their stores will yield greater access to fresh produce at an affordable cost to community members. These initiatives to support local food retailers would be achieved through subsidizing local grocers or providing tax relief to areas designated as food desert locations via GIS mapping software.1,3

While being an intern at Christian Appalachian Project (CAP), I have had hands on experience writing press releases, being able to pitch a story, create images on Canva to be used on the Instagram page, and being a part of meetings that discuss detailed images of the Spring/Summer issue of the Mt. Spirit Magazine. (CAP) has shown me that even little detail matters even if it means changing the words “poor people” to “people in need” makes a big differences when describing the region of Appalachia. I think that the biggest event that resonates with me the most is that (CAP) helps people in need by having repairs done to their home, having a hunger walk, accepting kids into their week long summer program, having a food pantry and providing clothing.

After reading the novel, and viewing the life of low wage workers it is upsetting to see how so many people live with housing instability, food instability and lack of access to health needs. In the novel Barbara and her coworker work long hours in multiple jobs but they can’t still feed themselves with what they are being paid. In the novel when the author states, “After polishing off the first house, no problem, we grab “lunch”- Doritos for Rosalie and a bag of Pepperidge Farm Goldfish for Maddy…” (pg80). This quote reveals how Rosalie and Maddy are living on a bag of chips. When we eat a bag of chips we just eat as a snack.
With the Mexican revolt, which culminated in Mexico’s independence in 1821, the Spanish presence in North America came to an end. In 1824, the expansion of the Mission system was halted. The missions were secularized in 1833, bringing an end to a critical chapter in California’s history (most of the missions were later returned to the Catholic Church). Over a short period – little more than 50 years – the Spanish brought a new culture to California, spreading European religion, agricultural practices, and eventually forms of government.
First and foremost, it is important to note that the clientele in both settings are teenagers, attempting to navigate their own worlds as best they can. Many of them suffer from mental and behavioral issues that affect their daily functioning, and these issues have had a significant enough impact on theirs and their families lives, that a more intensive option was sought. Needless to say, they are often apprehensive, even combative and angry. This is an understandable reaction and can be dealt with in different ways, some more effective than others.
