A Modern Day CInderella Story Have you ever thought that fairy-tale like Cinderella couldn't exist in real life? Ella Robinson thought the same thing until her father married her new stepmother, Lucy. A few years earlier Ella’s mother had died, and she figured that eventually her father would get remarried. Lucy and her two daughters had seemed nice enough when she first met them, and had even pretended to get along with her. However, when her father and Lucy had gotten married everything had seemed to change. Since Ella’s father was out of town on business most of the time, so she was left with her stepmother and her two stepsisters. During the first few weeks of living together, Lucy had been decent, but things had soon changed. She made Ella cook all the meals, clean the entire house, forced her to get a job (even though they had plenty of money), and whatever errands she and her older daughter, Peggy wanted. There are two different versions of “Cinderella”; there is a Walt Disney version and another version by Anne Sexton. Both of these versions are the same, but they are told to the reader differently. In both versions of the story, the authors describe a girl who was enslaved by her evil stepmother and her step sisters, who has shown jealousy towards her. However, the most important part, about the two versions of the “Cinderella” story told by Disney and Sexton is that both have different elements that are comparable and contrasting. The elements that compare and contrast both versions of the story are the plot, characters, characterization, and conflict.

The young girl has a story so similar to Cinderella. Her mother died while she was being born. That made her siblings tell her she killed her mother and she is bad luck. Her father then got remarried to a woman who is not fond of her. The woman whom he remarried, Niang, was just like the evil stepmother in Cinderella.

Cinderella is one of the most popular fairytales of our time because it is a beloved rags-to-riches story that can be inspiring to children. However, it gives them this idea that you must be dependent on others to grant you the things that you want in order to have a happy life. Ellen Jackson wrote a modern version of the fairytale by creating Cinder Edna to show that you don’t have to depend on a fairy godmother or marry a prince to live happily ever after. Therefore, the author displays many differences between them which gives a new and different idea to readers that having a good, strong character will get you through anything in life. The only similarity that Cinder Edna & Cinderella share is that they both live with a wicked step family and are forced to work as servants for them.
