Athletic competitions known as the Olympic games were revived in 1896, after the initial games, held in Greece every four years from 776 b.c.e to 393 c.e, in the effort to bring the world together in a healthy competition. Following several years of planning, key factors that shaped the modern Olympic games were the rise of feminism, nationalist rivalry, and capitalism. Indeed the Olympics proved to be “the true free trade of the future” as Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic movement described (doc1). Nations who hosted or participated in the games gained substantial amounts revenues and sponsors. this was the result of the spread of western and American culture due to wide access to new technology such as the televisions. Ryotaro Azuma, mayor of Tokyo, describes the effects of the Tokyo games on Japanese economics. As a result, the games allowed Japan to rise as a world trade of power and recover from the defeated-enemy syndrome in the eyes of most of the world. similarly, document 7 describes that countries that sponsored the Seoul Olympics of 1988 such as united states and Japan have made tremendous profits, on the other hand, Korean corporations have “failed to avail itself of an opportunity to display its industrial and economic power to a worldwide television” by not sponsoring the Olympics. According to the international Olympic committee statistics, there was also an increase in the economic participation of different nations to pay to the international Olympic committee for international tv and radio broadcast rights. The documents given all point towards a specific idea: how the olympics affect the world. The method in which the olympics affects the world differs in the various sources, with some speaking on progress in political relations, some speaking on progress socially, and finally others arguing it affects the world as a place for hostile countries to prove their worth to each other competitively. The documents about political progress are documents 1, 5, 6, and 7. The first, document 1, speaks very specifically on one who believes that the olympics will decrease tension between countries.
According to Doc 4 multiple corporations invested in the South Korean olympics which are said to make a massive sum of money because of said investments. One other part of the Document is that it states that the economical standpoint of the olympics is completely neutral. Many businesses ignore the politics of the countries and instead focus on gaining a profit. Another document that shows how the olympics changed is how the broadcasting rights in Doc 8 increase for every olympic game, showing the importance of the olympics rising every year. The final document showing a divide in the olympics due to politics is Doc 9.
There are two specific Olympic Games - held in Germany- that had significant actions occur. The 1936 Berlin Olympics were better known to many as “Hitler's Games” or the “Nazi Olympics”. According to Rodden, The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to not let Germany compete in the previous two Olympic Games for kindling the start of World War 1. In the early 1930s, the IOC decided to let Germany’s Weimar Republic hold the 1936 Games as a “welcome back to sports Germany.” This all took place before Hitler gained control of Germany and created the Nazi party.
The Olympics are generally a time of fun competition to bring the world together. In 1936, it was for Nazi propaganda. The 1936 Olympics led one athlete, Jesse Owens, to success and broke Hitler’s racial theories. The Berlin Olympics was an opportunity for Hitler to prove Aryan suppurity, unfortunately the ban of Jewish athletes didn’t settle well with the IOC. This resulted into a boycott, until Hitler agreed to take down any Nazi propaganda.
Although it can be argued that unorganized sports had a greater role in Europe during the period from 1860 to 1940, organized sports had a huge role during this time period, and was much more largely perceived by Europeans of the time. The role of organized sports from 1860 to 1940 differed in definition depending on who was asked and from what country that European came from. Some believed that sports instilled a sense of nationalism in a country’s players as well as its citizens, whether the country competed in the modern Olympics or not. On the other hand, some Europeans saw greater value in the moral lessons to be learned through organized sports. It was 1936 and the Berlin Games had officially begun. From the national flags to the eccentric athletes, everything was Olympic certified, along with the Nazi induced hate and discrimination that took action throughout the Games. The USA should’ve boycotted the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
For instance, sports like golf, tennis, cricket, fox hunting and horse racing was played mostly by wealthy people. Sports in the 20th century were played mostly by people with economic power that produced sport to the working classes with a smart way of succeeding in their business. Because sports at that time defined as a non-work activity this helped the sport to increase its fame to many people who wanted to get involved with it. This way of producing sport was adopted by many factory owners who wanted their workers to entertain and to be obstructed with something so they can be happy to work for lots of hours. However, in the first modern Olympics in 1896, women could not compete but after four years in the Olympics of Paris, women started to compete in only a few sports.

He allowed 13 nations in the international competition. The first modern Olympics consisted of, 241 male athletes (and no women) representing 14 nations competed in 43 events. This event was a total of 10 days.

The topic of my paper is whether we should keep the Olympics or should not keep the Olympics. To some people we should keep the Olympics, to other people we should not keep the Olympics. I believe we should keep the Olympics, it is a fantastic way for the best athletes in the world to show what they can do. Likewise, it is a good way to keep athletes healthy. People are saying we should not keep the Olympics for the reason that the Olympics do not have all the sports.
