More Than Just A Shine-Ellis Island Analysis

Migration DBQ The United States of America has, and will always be, a country where immigrants and refugees can migrate to, internally and internationally, to vastly improve their lives. During the late 19th century in the US, there was a massive influx of immigrants from all over the world, as well as movement of people already living in the US to different areas. These people were primarily seeking better job opportunities due to numerous economic issues in foreign countries and social tensions in the post-Reconstruction US.

In chapter one of Angel Island: Immigration Gateway to America, the authors describes to the reader how the immigration process was much more difficult for the non-whites than it was for the whites. When first getting to the immigration station on Angel Island the men and women were separated including couples, this was the standard policy. It was much easier for a first-class passenger to enter the land, all they needed was a cursory medical exam while the second-class passengers had to be loaded onto a ferry and taken to Angel Island for inspection. Each author writes about their own experience of immigration and life in America, which shapes their view of the American dream. The common theme between the three poems is the variable nature of the American dream and how it has different meanings for each person coinciding with contradictions between leisure and suffering.

Hi, I'm Vito. I will never forget the day. it was Monday january 1st 1892. It was a cold gloomy night, very miserable. The ship angrily rocked back and forth, making its way to the land of opportunity.

As the Great War raged on, people began fleeing their war torn homelands. Immigrants flooded into the United States at a breakneck pace. The way of life for all civilians was dramatically altered as their husbands and baby boys were shipped overseas to fight. Immigrants that were thrown into the fray of the developing United States faced the most drastic change to their lives during World War I.

Ellis Island: Its History to the Hudson River and America At its inception, Ellis Island was a response to the rising number of European immigrants seeking to begin new lives in the land of promise. From 1892 to 1954, Ellis Island a small island in New York Bay, served as the main point of entry for immigrants to the United States. The Hudson River was the main gateway for these immigrants and the diffusion of their culture to the Hudson River Valley, and in the end, the country.

One day when I woke up I was getting ready to go to America. I was leaving with my Dad, Mom, Sister, and my Brother. My family and I are leaving leaving from Germany and going to America. We are going to bring clothes such as shirts, pants, underwear, socks, shoes, and hats. We will also bring soap, food, and other stuff like that to survive in America.

Immigration to America had its benefits and downside. America was the place to go in the 19th century people all around the world immigrated to the US. The US needed rules and regulations on entering the country due to types of things that were happening in Document 2. The positives of immigrating to the US was too good to pass up.

Just like several other ethnic groups in the 1800s, poverty drove many Greeks to emigrate to America. In their home country, agriculture paid inadequately and was long, arduous work. And those already paltry conditions turned destitute for citizens when blight struck their crops. This caused a mass migration from Greece that began in the 1890s and lasted through the 1920s (Iliou, 2007). During that time, many people from Greece sailed to Ellis Island, in hopes of a better future.

First, Immigrants migrated with the idea of the united States having a better life for them. Document D gives us an idea of the benefits an immigrant believed were true. The idea of no oppressive taxes, no kings, no compulsory military service, and no dungeons gave relief. All the troubles from their homelands would not be present in the Land of Opportunity. Taking a chance for a better life was the only option left.

The unfortunate people that were denied entry to the U.S. for various reasons, (sometimes because of their occupation; if they were contract laborers, polygamists, paupers, convicted criminals, anarchists, and other times because of a health or financial problem), would have a miserable time at Ellis Island (only 2 percent of the immigrants arriving were denied entry). They would have just wasted a huge amount of money, wasted a lot of time,

Lisa, the protagonist, is depicted to be rediscovering her language and reuniting with her ancestors, demonstrating a revival of Indigenous identity. However, the settler environment in which it is occurring tempers this resurgence, as the balance of power over the land remains with the settler state

In this novel the reader can see the inner turmoil within literature and its characters. There is a major shift present from supernatural and religious happiness, into individual driven happiness. Due to this newly valued individual independence, social boundaries in race and gender started to appear, thus causing the transition into the Harlem Renaissance, a movement that celebrated African American culture through artwork, literature, and music. Throughout this era elements of new identity, political challenging, and gender and racial improvements were all addressed and examined in the associated literature. The poem Legal Alien is a good example of the ideals encompassed in the era.

We were woken up early the moon was in the middle of the night 's sky the winter 's air was crisp. All was still all was well except us creeping through the streets of our town. We wanted to be at the docks before anyone else, we were done with the poverty world war one had brought with it. We arrived at the docks with hope and in abundance in our eyes, But were met with realization everyone was already at the dock. The smell was putrid,and we were met with many haggard faces we also were in third class to top it all off.
