Tension of relationship was manipulated excellently in the production when the boys heard their mother’s footstep coming towards there room. Facial expression as blank as ever came across the two boys. Right away a booming voice echoed through their bedroom. Both the Boys shaking out of their socks experienced sudden fear with expressionless faces and hunched body posture, when their mother was speaking to them. We soon learn the character’s relationship between their mother was strong showing the effectiveness that their mother had on them.

The extreme competitiveness of Bernard, the father, is very evident in this scene itself thus giving us a glimpse of his narcissistic personality. The poem Dusting by Julia Alverez relays several ideas to the reader. It begins by describing a young child going about a house and writing their name on the furniture. The child 's mother follows behind her and, in the process of dusting, incidentally erases the writing. While this poem may seem superficial from a quick reading, it not only reflects some aspects of Alverez’s childhood, but it also reveals some thought provoking questions. In Dusting, through making an analogy to a relationship between a mother and her child, Julia Alvarez demonstrates her desire to break away from traditional or cultural expectations, express her individuality, be well-known, and, ultimately, she makes an important point about life.

Harwood suggests that the role of motherhood forces one to give up their passion and careers. In the poem, 'Suburban Sonnet ', Harwood uses the pseudonym of Miriam Stone to explore the loss of identity that a mother can experience. The use of personal pronouns not only shows the loss of identity of this women, but also Harwood suggests that this is universal and is affecting many other women. The women 'who played for Rubinstein ' shows that this poem is more than a personal lament, but rather a comment on society that in order to become a mother, you must sacrifice your passion and career. The use of unpleasant imagery 'children chatter, then scream and fight ' highlights the burn and 'annoyance ' of the children.

From beginning to end, the son calls his father “Baba” to show his affection and admiration. Despite the father’s inability to come up with a new story, the son still looks up to him. This affectionate term also contrasts with the father’s vision of the “boy packing his shirts [and] looking for his keys,” which accentuates the undying love between the father and son (15 & 16) . The father’s emotional “screams” also emphasize his fear of disappointing the son he loves so much (17). Despite the father’s agonizing visions, the son remains patient and continues to ask for a story, and their relationship remains “emotional” and “earthly”--nothing has changed (20-21).
