The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius and the subsequent burial of Pompeii is one of the greatest disasters known to man. The volcano erupted in 79 BC after a major earthquake in 62 BC woke up the mountain. The towns of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Boscoreale, and Oplontis were buried early morning on August 25, 79.
Oplontis and Boscoreale were the first towns to be destroyed; they were buried in the first weak lava flows and explosions. After the first and second surges of lava, Herculaneum was cleanly buried. Pompeii was last to be destroyed; it was buried by six surges of molten lava. The first and second flows didn’t reach Pompeii; they destroyed the other three towns. Surge number three, however, reached the northern end of Pompeii, demolishing building and opening the way for later flows. The fourth deluge went straight through the town, wreaking havoc. It is estimated that the flow killed 650 people, if not more. The fifth wave reached the southern end of the town, killing more people, and the layer

Vesuvius and the subsequent destruction of the area: that of Pliny the Younger. Pliny the Younger was the nephew of Pliny the Elder, a well-known historian. Pliny the Younger wrote a letter to Tacitus, a famous historian of the time, about the eruption and the death of his uncle. He told of how his mother, uncle, and he were on the other side of the bay from Vesuvius when they saw the enormous ash cloud. Pliny the Elder then received a letter from Tacitus’ wife, Rectina, telling him she was at the foot of the mountain and was terrified. Pliny and some men prepared a ship to go save Rectina and as many people as they could. Pliny the Elder never returned, he was buried with the people in the lava flows. Pliny the Younger told of all the destruction that occurred, then he sent his letter to Tacitus and it was included in his history books. This is the only known eye-witness account of the eruption of Mt.

After having Odysseus tell the Phaeacian all his troubles after the Trojan War and having to land on their island, the King of the Phaeacian, Alcinous, offered to help Odysseus to get back home. Alcinous sent some of his men to travel with Odysseus. As the ship was away and traveling back home, Poseidon talked to Zeus, about a plan that he has for the Phaeacian after helping Odysseus and dishonoring him. His plan was to destroy the beautiful ship of the Phaeacians and ring a mountain around their city. Zeus had his part on the disastrous plan as well, he tells Poseidon to “wait until the people are watching the ship sail into the harbor”, then “turn the ship into stone near the shore” and then to raise the ring of mountains around the island (95).
Many lives had been lost in this earthquake. In Document F, it explains how the plague brought the population of Rome from one million to 250,000, so it killed 75 percent of the people. This shows how the plague lowered the population drastically. This loss of population made it harder for Rome to find laborers and soldiers for war. The economy suffered and Rome was forced to acknowledge the loss of its power.

There are many natural disasters that affect the world, for example, volcanoes. Mount St. Helens is known to be the most active volcano in the Cascade Range in Washington; effecting the people and the state. It was first recognized as a volcano in 1835! Before the eruption on May 18,1980, Mount St. Helens was a beautiful symmetrical cone, 3,000 meters above sea level. For most of the 20th century, many people viewed this mountain and recreation area as a beautiful and peaceful place, but after the volcano erupted in 1980 that view point was shattered.
Triggered the largest landslide in recorded history and a major volcanic eruption that scattered ashes across a dozen states. The blast removed 1,300 feet off the top of Mt. St. Helen, making shockwave flow across the land, flattening forests and melting snow and ice, making it all muddy everywhere. A 57 total

Polyphemus threatens Odysseus by saying “‘Come back, Odysseus, and I’ll treat you well, praying the god of earthquake to befriend you-his son I am, for he by his avowal fathered me, and, if he will, he may heal me of this black wound-he and no other of all the happy gods or mortal men’” (160, 564-559). Polyphemus wanted to make a deal with Odysseus; he would have his father make Odysseus’ voyage home smooth, and Polyphemus hoped that Poseidon could heal his eye wound. Polyphemus seemed to doubt that his father would help him with his blindness, which shows that their relationship is not close or strong. After Odysseus threatened to kill Polyphemus and says that Poseidon could not help his blindness, Polyphemus prays to his father, saying “‘O hear me, lord, blue girdler of the islands, if I am thine indeed, and thou art father: grant that Odysseus, raider of cities, never sees his home: Laertes’ son, I mean, who kept his hall on Ithaca.

I am content” (38).
The earthquake of 2010 was a 7.0 on the Richter Scale. This large earthquake caused the death of 230,000 people. This was due to poor building structure and little warning. There were too many bodies to move and so few people who were capable of moving them (due to injuries) that the bodies would just be piled up on roads and in city squares. As a result of the earthquake, a total of 10,000 children were left orphaned.
