Growing up in a time when bosses and teachers led in a mostly domination or coercion style (Northouse pg. 14), I never imagined myself being a leader. My personal style is mostly intrapersonal (Gardner, Multiple Intelligences, available at: http://howardgardner.com/multiple-intelligences) and in my past experiences at school and work, I believed that I did not have the qualities needed to be a leader ie; to dominate and coerce people. However, as I have grown professionally and personally I have come to realise that there are different types of leadership styles and each are effective in their own way. My strengths are that I have a strong understanding of the school’s organization and goals and encourage the school to be involved in the improvement of the wider community. As key stage coordinator I feel I am approachable and always available for people to speak personally about their professional development or personal lives, but always give my team of teachers the freedom to tackle situations in their own classrooms using their own judgement. (Northouse, 2006) My team of teachers and children I teach are secure in their knowledge of my expectations, morals and ethics. The colleges I asked for feedback comment’s were varied, some enjoyed the freedom I gave them while others felt that this was in fact showed lack of participation in my management style (The Full Range Leadership Model). My goal for the is to make all teachers under my management to feel empowered if to feel that I am making making decisions based on all of their concerns, not just the more vocal people. (Nothouse 2006)Another weakness in my leadership style that I would like address is the Charisma aspect of leadership. I am comfortable when leading small groups such as my key stage or on a 1 to 1 basis of peer mentoring. I tend to get very nervous when having to speak in front of large groups of people which would make it difficult to lead a school. I also have a weakness in negotiating conflict and try to encourage people to work it out themselves because I do not like to be seen as having preferences amongst people. I tend to worry about what other people want more than concentrating on the problem, which can make decision making difficult because you cannot always make everyone happy ie; group pressure can influence my decisions (Northouse,
Our leaders build other leaders, and are themselves continuous learners modeling exemplary leadership qualities; at times making it appear almost easy. It was during the Principalship Course that I not only knew I could, but now knew I wanted to become a principal. Many of my “ah ha moments” came in the form of connecting the puzzle pieces and seeing the decisions and actions through the new lense as a leader. The Virtues of Leadership article confirms student and teachers’ need to make sense of where they belong in the cultural framework of a school system (Sergiovanni, T. J., 2005). I always knew York Suburban School District has models of excellence throughout entire staffs, faculties and administrators.
Leadership Assessment According to the Leadership Styles Assessment, it is apparent that I possess an inclusive mixed style of management (Rockhurst, n.d.). The assessment confirms that my methods of leadership are visionary and coaching. Comparably, I agree with the outcome of the evaluation because, throughout my years of supervising, colleagues have described me as a person who possesses the ability to direct individuals toward a new direction. I have been the catalyst to draw constituents into vision while engaging my team with empathy and self-confidence.
The organizational factors include: flexibility, responsibility, standards, rewards, clarity, and commitment. The research shows that the coercive and pacesetting styles have a negative correlations on organizational climate while the other four styles have a positive impact. Thus, except for unusual circumstances where coercive and pacesetting styles might be appropriate, leaders should normally use a combination of the authoritative, affiliative, democratic and coaching styles to achieve success. The best leaders will sense from their emotional intelligence when to use each of these styles. Values are leadership principles which are turned into actions. Values are important aspect in an individual’s life. You are person in charge of you happiness.

Weber was one of the first of the theorists to recognize that leadership itself was situational in nature, and that effective individuals needed to move dynamically from one type of leadership style to another to remain successful. 1] Bureaucratic Leadership "Bureaucratic administration means fundamentally domination through knowledge." Bureaucratic leadership is based upon fixed official duties under a hierarchy of authority, applying a system of rules for management and decision-making.
In this regard, leaders and managers can appear at any level of an organisation and are not exclusive of each other (Germano, 2010). Leadership theories identify leaders based upon traits as well as how their influence and power is used to achieve organizational goals and objectives (Germano, 2010). As such, trait based characteristics include leaders such as autocratic, democratic, bureaucratic and charismatic. On the other hand, leadership that is viewed from the perspective of the exchange of power and its utilisation to secure outcomes, are situational, transactional and transformational leaders (Germano, 2010). It is of paramount importance to consider the different types of theories of management and leadership and their potential impact on organizational strategy being that management and leadership plays a vital role in the success of businesses.
This paper will examine the three leadership theories, identify how they apply to my practice, and explore how these theories interact with each other. The Trait Leadership Theory is based on the belief that a person is born with special traits contributing to natural leadership abilities. Studies of famous historical leaders have been used to identify various traits for this theory. Although the list of traits differs from study to study, there are five major traits that are consistent throughout most studies.

ntroduction I have completed a self diagnostic profiling task which has helped me to analyse if my behaviours, understandings and skills tend towards management or leadership. I had to score myself between 1 and 5, with 1 being closer to management and 5 being closer to leadership. Out of 24 questions 21 of those questions were scored closer to leadership. My results show that I am a leader.
Teachers are the life-blood of school districts across the United States. They are masters of their specific grade-level content and work tirelessly to manage the learning and well-being of their students. Teachers are the academic leaders of the learning environment within their classrooms and collaborate with their students throughout the year in order to facilitate learning, and foster creativity and problem solving. However, over the last thirty years, teacher leadership has taken on a whole new meaning.
