The mystery cults of Rome were created from the conquest of foreign territories. There were many mystery cults, but little is know about them due to the secrecy that surrounds them. The Romans worshiped many Goddess in their mystic cults, all focused on fertility, and the idea of an afterlife. They also focused on solar Gods, who were forgiving. Each mystery cult used different practices to express their devotion to their once foreign deities.
One of the mystery cults in Rome worshiped the Goddess Demeter. Demeter was a fertility Goddess, they also worshipped her daughter Persephone. Zoroastrianism is a Persian belief where the God of Light fought the God of Darkness, and the God of Light won. In this battle, a savior figure helps the God of light win. This belief had the idea of angels and followers were called magi as priests. In Mithraism, they worshiped Mithras, the Prince of Light and Truth. In this belief, followers must live an ethical life to maintain a link with Mithras. Mithras is portrayed as a sympathetic god that understands human suffering. This belief was only for men since the Romans didn’t believe that women could be ethical, and it was especially popular with soldiers. They would worship in underground temples called a Mithraeum. In these Mithraeums, they would be baptized in blood and share a communion of bread and wine. They would worship on Sunday, which was the day of the sun. On December 25, which was around the winter solstice, they would worship Mirthas with a large festival. It was called the Feast of the Unconquered Sun when the sun triumphed over the darkness.
