Is technology changing our brains for the better or for the worse? The human brain is a biological masterpiece and is the most advanced organ on the face of the planet. In Richard Restak’s essay “Attention Deficit: The Brain Syndrome of Our Era,” he speaks about how the advancements in technology in this modern era have affected the brain’s habits and functions. Multitasking is requiring the brain to change how it functions, its organizations, and efficiency throughout day-to-day tasks and is also enabling people to do things otherwise not possible. Within the past two decades, the amount of time we spend on using technology has increased by a large amount.

The article, “Taking Multitasking to Task” by Mark Harris demonstrates the effects of having too much technology in our lives and observes the effects of technology on his life and society. Harris begins his essay referring to personal anecdotes of his use of technology and how it affects his life drastically to a point where there is no return from it. Alina Tugend, author of, “Multitasking Can Make You Lose … Um … Focus,” is an accredited author that is featured in multiple respected publications. This article was published in the New York Times in 2008. The article talks about multitasking and how most people think that is a great thing, but in reality it causes more problems that we know. Mrs. Tugend voices her opinion on how multitasking hurts more people that it helps. Her opinions are clearly voiced throughout this article that she does not think multitasking is a benefit for people.

In order to live a better life, we all need a sound body, a sound mind and a sound soul. I’m blessed to have all three (Essay Idea). My physical health is good (Paragraph Idea). Since, I have good physical health, I can easily perform everyday routine tasks, and I can enjoy everything.

In my references I stumble upon various results of experiments that authors mention in their work and those results stated some of the consequences the brain faces after multitasking. Multitasking is used in everyday life, people use multitasking without even knowing it. The fact of the matter is that multitasking has both advantages and disadvantages. In the essay “The Myth of Multitasking” by Christine Rosen, Rosen is able to reference various doctors, specialists and psychologists to support her claim that multitasking is dangerous not only while driving and working, but also for people's overall well-being. Which I agree with, the human mind should only focus on single though at time. Multitasking requires that we focus on multiple unrelated thoughts at the same time.

Multitasking has become a common way for people to complete more tasks at a time; however, it is not the best option because it is less efficient, causes distractions and the possibility for mistakes. As society develops, our life becomes busier and busier. In times when we become overwhelmed with our workloads, multitasking becomes an option because it can help get a lot of work done all at the same time.

We all use it. Whether it is a text to your significant other, a hard work day on the job, a quick drive to the store, even something as simple as going to church, no matter where we are we always seem to be using technology. Technology is a growing issue with each passing day and even though there are positive effects it also has its negative side. It affects the things we do such as communication and playing, but most importantly affects our brain with our daily thought process. The rapid growth and evolution of digital communication, has resulted in it now becoming the backbone of the way we interact with other people. Beginning from simple 160-character SMS messages to text’s influence on the internet including Facebook, Twitter, Blogs and Instagram and then introduced on our mobile phones with BBM and whatsapp; digital communication has become a part of our spoken discourse.
