In this reading "A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson" by Mary Rowlandson, is about a war between the Indians and colonists of New England. The Native Americans attacked the Lancaster colony by burning things down, killing people and etc. A lot of people died doing this ambush and some got captured including Mary. The Native Americans decided to lead the colonist into the woods, until they arrived at a near lodge. Everything in Mary’s life was now gone, nothing would ever be the same. She prayed that God was with her and watching over her along the way. Mary believed that she was going to die, but she didn’t. She wondered where the rest of her children could be, after awhile she met her son and started to cry. She started reading the Bible more and understanding the word. The Bible gave her hope that her family would some day come back together. One day an English man came in town and the Indians didn’t want Mary talking to him. After a while Mary did eventually talk to the man and she received information from her husband and friends. Her husband sent her things that she could sell for money in the village. May’s master made a deal that if he received some items then Mary could go home, the deal was met and she went home. She didn't want to leave her children behind, but she had to do what she had to do. After leaving she believed that God had answered her prayers. Mrs.Rowlandson, Mr.Hoar, and two indians traveled with her to the town named Lancaster. When they went to the town there was no one there and many homes were destroyed. Mary Rowlandson was taken as captive by Native Americans during King Philip's War in 17th century America. Her faith and a Bible given to her by her captors got her through her 11-week captivity, and afterwards she wrote her story in a book titled The Sovereignty and Goodness of God. Her book, the first American best seller, sparked a genre of captivity narratives in American literature. But the dangers of early America were ever-present, and when war broke out between the Native Americans and the English settlers, Mary and her children were captured and taken as prisoner.
In reading the Book, The Unredeemed Captive, By John Demos, I found that the relations between the Native Americans, the French and the English were different than I had anticipated. These people groups had many differences in their cultures and also had varying religious, military and family views. The two communities I will be addressing are the British Colony at Deerfield and the Native American and French colony at Kahnawake. Kahnawake was made up of Indians, from different tribes such as the Huron, Iroquois, and Mohawk, to name a few. But not only Indians, they were also in coexistence with the French, as Kahnawake was, a Catholic mission.

The story took place during the war between the English and French known as the Queen Anne’s War in New England, 1704. Conflict spread throughout North American colonies like that of Deersfield. The French ally with the Mohawk Indians in attempt to capture their prime suspect, John Williams. On the night of February 29 a raid began throughout the town. Demos described the raid and gave detail of the attack.
Reaching into the depth of maternal love in her heart for her son, helpless, hopeless, weak, grieving and in turmoil among those passing by on the road, who were uncaring, reviling, and mocking her son (Matthew 27:39-44; Mark 15:31; Luke 23:36,37,39). Only through the power of God uplifting and sustaining her could Mary have remained there, and yes, she knew, her son was the Son of God and Saviour. Yes, she saw the crowd that came to make a spectacle of her Son. Ringing in her ears were the shouts of the crowd saying Crucify Him, crucify Him, crucify Him. She was there when He was nailed to the cross when raised between a thief that mocked Him and one who received Him (Luke 23:40-43).
Could there be contrasts and likenesses between two accounts composed by two unique individuals? Confronting various types of afflictions? It is conceivable to discover contrasts and likenesses in two stories relating two various types of occasions? Imprisonment accounts were main stream with pursuers in both America and the European continents. Bondage stories of Americans relate the encounters of whites subjugated by Native Americans and Africans oppressed by early American settlers.
The narrative offers an account which can be used to describe the particularly puritan society based on the ideals of Christianity and the European culture. It offers a female perspective of the Native Americans who showed no respect to the other religious groups. The narrator makes serious observation about her captors noting the cultural differences as well as expectations from one another in the society. However, prejudice is evident throughout the text which makes the narratives unreliable in their details besides being written after the event had already happened which means that the narrator had was free to alter the events to create an account that favored her. Nonetheless, the narrative remains factually and historically useful in providing the insights into the tactics used by the Native Americans
Food is an essential thing needed to survive. In A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson; Rowlandson faced many challenges that she had to overcome. During her captivity, her biggest challenge was finding food every day. Her captors’ food was different compared to the food she was used to in her Puritan society in Europe. This forced her to adapt to her captors’ eating habits if she wanted any food.
During the Puritan times gender roles in the society were very anti-feminist. Women were required to act as housewives and do womanly duties such as cook, clean, and take care of their children. Women had very little freedom as far as their rights were concerned also. Puritan writers, Anne Bradstreet and Mary Rowlandson both experienced the struggle of the anti-feminist movement. From their writings we see that they both were against anti-feminism and they tried their best to abandon the whole idea.
During the colonial period many settlers came to the New World to escape persecution for their Puritan beliefs. Writers such as William Bradford, John Winthrop, Anne Bradstreet, and Mary Rowlandson all shared their experiences and religious devotion throughout their literature that ultimately inspired and influenced settlers to follow. This essay will discuss the similarities in Anne Bradstreet and Mary Rowlandson’s work as they both describe their experiences as signs from God. Anne Bradstreet came to the New World as a devoted Puritan as she repeatedly talked about it in her poetry. In her poems she discusses many tragedies that happened in her life such as; the burning of her house and the death of her two grandchildren all of which she thinks were signs from God.
I don’t know that I have ever read or heard a story of a Native American being treated well by settlers or even now days. Why were Native Americans treated so horribly?. Did the settlers have the right to push Natives to the west for their own happiness?. How much have things changed in history with the Native Americans?. “The Diary of Mary Rowlandson” is a good example of how Native Americans were treated horribly.
A woman’s place in Puritan society was very limited during these times. A preface was added to her narrative by a puritan pastor as approval for her to publish her prose. Before her captivity Rowlandson didn’t know what a struggle consisted of. She was the typical housewife in a Puritan society. She never went without food, shelter, or clothing before her captivity.

In Louise Erdrich’s poem “Captivity”, Erdrich responds to Rowlandson by telling a story about a captive of a Native American tribe through the eyes of the captive. Throughout their stories, both authors utilize diction to produce a specific tone that conveys their overall theme. Through analysis of both authors’ diction choice, it is evident that Rowlandson’s hopeful tone supports her theme of exclusive belief in God, whereas Erdrich’s desperate tone supports her message that beliefs are susceptible to change.

Rowlandson displays a change in her perception of "civilized" and "savage", in spite of the fact that her overall world view does not alter.
