Hawthorne Before reading the story the only thing I knew about Nathanial Hawthorne was that he wrote The Scarlet Letter. I have never read The Scarlet Letter but after reading the “The Birthmark” I will now. I believe that Hawthorne wants to tell his reads that all mortal things are flawed or unperfected. If we want perfection on earth it does not exists. If we want perfection it is only located in heaven creatures.
In the short story “The Birth-Mark” written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the reader is introduced to a tragic love story that shows how foolhardy it is to make someone perfect. Hawthorne hammers this theme throughout the story of the scientist Aylmer and his lovely wife, Georgiana, who has a small, hand shaped birthmark on her cheek on the left side of her face. Aylmer develops a fixation on the birthmark that keeps his wife from being the image of perfection, and vows to use his scientific knowledge to remove it. Over the course of “The Birth-Mark” Hawthorne uses imagery and symbolism, figurative language, and type of narrator and narration. Hawthorne's use of vivid imagery and symbols to describe the conflict between Aylmer and the birthmark vividly highlights the conflict of Aylmer's love for Georgiana and his distaste of the birthmark.

Many people analyze the people they walk pass on the street. Whether she was wearing last season’s boots, or he was talking emphatically into the phone, the first thoughts that come to mind are surface thoughts and generalizations that are based on a person’s existing experiences and knowledge. However, surface thoughts and generalizations can be changed when one learns and analyzes more information about the specified person. The woman might have been too poor to afford this season’s boots, and the man might have been talking to the doctor of his sick son. The new information helps understand the reasoning behind the characters’ actions and personality.
I founded interesting that the author noticed that the Salem village is the center of the witchcraft misbelief. By everything the evil noted in Goodman Brown; it makes sense that Hawthorne would use a Salem village for this story. In my reflection about the story, I realize that is a place where the events continuously happened because it has a different incidents or devices that are widely found in the literature and recognized as motifs appear. Hawthorne, Nathaniel. "
