Family Isn’t First
In the novel When I Found You by Catherine Ryan Hyde there is a baby found in the woods. His name is Nathan Bates. He lives with his grandma for a majority of his life after being abandoned by his parents. He gets into some trouble his grandma is fed up with him. Eventually she wants to give him to the man who found him in the wood, Nathan McCann. He takes him and tries to give him a better life. The boy still gets into some trouble but also learns a lot about his past. This novel illustrates a dysfunctional family.
First, Nat’s father left town abandoning Nat. Nathan tells Nat the truth about his father jumping bail and leaving town. Nat says, “I c[an] find him. Maybe I can live with him” (Hyde 120). Nat asks Nathan what he has to do to make him give up on him. Nathan says, “[t]here’s nothing you c[an] do. I will never wash my hands of you” (Hyde 118). Nathans response shows that he took Nat in knowing he will be in his life forever. There was no doubt in Nathans head that through the good and bad, he will be by Nat’s side. He wants Nat to understand although people may have left his life, he will always be there. Nathans showing him that he sees potential in Nat changing his life for the better. Nathan brings Elenor to juvenile hall to visit Nat to tell him they are getting married; his reaction was not that great. Roger says, “[t]hat guy give[s] you everything. Saves your ass the day you were born. Comes to see you every visiting day” (Hyde 154). Rogers trying to make Nat see he has a good person in his life right now. Roger sees Nathan does more for Nat than most parents do for their own children. He is trying to make Nat be grateful to have a guy like that in his life, and that he doesn’t take Nathan for
“The Other Wes Moore” is a true story, written by Wes Moore about how he and another kid with the same name ended up with two extremely different fates. Both Wes`s lived in the same area, grew up without fathers, had a difficult childhood and both got in trouble with the law for being involved with the wrong crowd in the streets. The Two both also were raised by single mothers who influenced their lives extremely. Wes found out about the other Wes and began to visit him in prison. Wes Moore wrote this book because he realized that the fate of the other Wes could’ve easily been his.
The memoir that I decided to read was The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore. This story takes place in Baltimore, Maryland in the late 1970’s and switches towards the year 2000 at the end of the novel. Wes Moore, the author, was inspired to write this novel when he found out that there was a man with the same name as him who grew up in Baltimore. He decided to look further and meet this other Wes Moore and he wrote him a letter. The two finally met and this is where the story begins.
Light in the forest written by Conrad Richter. True son acted very different from the beginning, then towards the end. True son was a young man that grew up In Indian territory, and was born white but got captured by the when he was a young boy. Towards the beginning of the book he loved the Indians a very much disliked the whites and more to the end he started to like both the Indian and white. How is it that two men that come from identical backgrounds end up being completely opposites? Wes Moore takes us back to his childhood growing up, and also introduces us to a character sharing the same name as him, and similarly, the same lifestyle. Both of the young men shared the absence of a father figure, living in poor neighborhoods, bad influences, and lack of education. While reading, we question “how?” and “why?”

In “The Veldt”, Ray Bradbury focused deeply on foreshadowing to predict the parents death at the end. In the story there is a room that makes it look like whatever the children think. The technology takes over the kids and the parents try to win them back. The parents battle over the kids they lose to the nursery and their life. He uses Foreshadowing till the bitter end started very early on in the story.
The father’s wife had recently died, leaving him with the boy to take care of with the only mindset of keeping him alive, doing anything for their survival. This affected the father in a big way, leaving him with little hope and hardly any reason to stay alive, but the boy was “his warrant” (McCarthy 5) , his only reason for life. The boy starts out very scared and weak, always wanting to hide behind his father, knowing that one day he will die. The boy matures with every event that happens, and he maintains to have hope throughout most of them. “The man fell back instantly and lay with blood bubbling from the hole in his forehead.
In the second half of the Canadian novel Lullabies for Little Criminals, author Heather O’Neill continues to illustrate and conclude the development of the themes of loss of innocence and love. Baby’s negative life decisions, such as delinquency, prostitution, and drug addiction are elements of her need to feel a sense of belonging and affection. Unfortunately, the lack of her family’s presence causes her to seek appreciation in the wrong places. Although Baby may be innocent, she is also vulnerable as she is so oblivious to real life. As her exposure becomes greater, her character slowly begins to deteriorate in the last half of the novel.
Nat should not have been forced to live and work at the chandlery. There are three proofs, bad things that could have or did happen to Nat, Nat could have been helpful with his family, Nat’s schoolwork was delayed. The first reason that Nat shouldn’t have been forced to live and work at the chandlery is that bad things could have happened to him. Nat could have died while he was on a ship.
Accepting When You Are Wrong In Nick Flynn’s memoir, Another Bullshit Night In Suck City, the narrator, Nick, and his father, Jonathan have developed a negligent relationship among each other. Nick has many encounters with his father, where he could have approached him in order to reconnect the father son bond but he does not. However, Nick does feel that not only is his father lost but he is as well.
Neil Gaiman is a Hugo award winning British author of short stories, graphic novels, comic books, audio titles and films. Some of his notable works include ‘Stardust’, ‘Neverwhere’, ‘Good Omens’, ‘The Sandman’ series of graphic novels, etc. ‘The Ocean At The End of The Lane’ written by Neil Gaiman, is a book that is spoken through a child’s perspective, of the world around him. The book deals with the unstable emotions that the protagonist, a child goes through that eventually leads to a disconnect between his childhood and adulthood.
Family, for most people, is defined as a sort of safe haven for people to go to. For others, families may be fragmented, split, or may have wrong ideals as a whole. Broken families, while they may have a long lasting effect on the spouses, can also have a detrimental, long-lasting effect on the children of these marriages which can lead to certain mental illnesses. For example, in the story of the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Deborah faces the emotional effects of her mother’s death. Other stories such as “A Rose for Emily”, show how Emily 's fathers parenting techniques and a lack of a mother figure burdened her future.
