The education path to becoming a neonatologist is very tedious and intense. In current years the public has been made aware of a syndrome called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The syndrome has been publicized for many reasons including the fact that it is a completely avoidable syndrome based on the pregnant mother’s behaviors. The syndrome causes disabilities for the children, and is a life-long syndrome that cannot be reversed once it is achieved. In a report, Substance Abuse and the American Woman, sent out by the Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, at least one of every five pregnant women uses alcohol and/or other drugs during pregnancy (NOFAS).

Over the past few years, there has been a significant increase in maternal opioid use. Opioid use during one’s pregnancy can result in Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS). Data drawn from 28 states in America show that the overall NAS incidences in those states has increased 300% from 1999–2013 (CDC). Babies born with this syndrome are at a high risk of being born too small and underweight (MOD). The baby’s overall health is drastically affected when a woman chooses to use drugs while knowingly pregnant.

You must be certified in the NICU; you have to complete a minimum of year’s clinical experience in a hospital place. Newborn infants who are born with severe medical conditions and disorders are placed in the NICU to be cared for. The NICU Nurse has to be at the baby’s bed side twenty-four/seven administering medicine, drawing blood, performing tests, and starting IV lines. They are responsible for running all sorts of tests

Societal Influences on Professional Nursing The nursing profession is an evolving field of work that shows no signs of stopping.
