Parliament applied mercantilist theory to the Americans a series of laws known as the Navigation Acts that state that; English or colonial merchants only could engaged in trade with the colonies, certain valuable Americans products could only be sold only in the mother land (enumerated goods), all foreign goods destined to the colonies had to be shipped to England and pay England import duties, and the colonies could not make or export items that competed with English products. Smuggling was the result of the “mercantile system” created by the British in which they sold the finished products to sell to the colonies, smuggling was rampant in the colonies and Americans saw nothing wrong with it, they did not look kindly on government interference agreeing with Thomas Jefferson that free trade is a “natural right”. By lacking of large-scale agricultural enterprise the north did not demand many enslave laborers, the difference with the large-scale slavery in the south accentuated a regional difference that developed in the colonies. In the south, Virginia Company was established as a joint-stock company, by a group of merchants and wealthy gentry, to plant colonies in America, joint-stock companies had been developed in England as a
The non-Separatist Puritans secured a royal charter from King Charles I to form the Massachusetts Bay Company in 1629. The Massachusetts Bay Company was planned to be a business venture, but was also used as a refuge for Puritans. The Bay Colony quickly became the biggest and most influential of all of the New England colonies. For many years, the charter was used as a constitution for the Company. Governmental power rested with the General Court, who then elected the governor and his assistants.
The markets in every colony had special and valuable goods to trade with the other colonies who want to buy their product from them. “This trade proved significant, accounting for 18 percent of Carolina’s total export earnings before 1749 and remaining at roughly 10 percent until 1775.(facts on file).” In the early years colonist went in the transatlantic trade, Merchants and planters in Virginia exported tobacco and New englanders shipped grain and lumber in exchange for the colonist imported goods. By the early 18th century the value imports increased and more colonist started to trade into the trend.
Mayflower Compact: The very first agreement for the individual government in America. The men from the Pilgrim group signed the Mayflower Compact. Puritans: a group that was very religious who wanted to change the Church of England to purify it. They arrived to America because they wanted to plant a firm religious land as a new beginning.
Religion was very important to the Puritans in the 1600s. John Winthrop a member of the Puritans gentry, wrote to his wife the ‘I am verily persuaded God will bring some heavy affliction upon this land.” A year later he went and lead a group of a group of puritans to New England. By the 1630s another twenty thousand Puritans would come to America. When John became governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, he told immigrants that will have to guide people toward this holy ideal or they were not welcomed.
In the 17th c., the Massachusetts Bay Company centered around the trade between England and the Massachusetts Bay Indians. Upon the realization that the original company charter issued by the king did not explicitly bind the company’s meeting to England, the Massachusetts Bay Company founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the Great Puritan Migration. The Massachusetts Bay Colony consisted of a large group of Puritans-- those who sought to “purify” the Church of England of the remnants of the Roman Catholic papacy whose name was grievously tainted in the late middle ages. The Puritans were fervently loyal to their ministers who were under religious persecution by the Church of England. Therefore the Puritans followed their ministers to
The British men gathered full control of the trading center present in the Americas, and created the Navigation Acts to help aid them in their tactics to take control over all trade within the Americas. The Navigation Acts were passed under a mercantilist system, and was used to regulate trade in a way that only benefitted the British economy. These acts restricted trade between England and its colonies to English or colonial ships, required certain colonial goods to pass through England before export, provided subsidies for the production of certain raw goods in the colonies, and banned colonial competition in large-scale manufacturing. This lowered the competition in the trading world for the British and caused the British to have a major surge in power, that greatly attributed to the growth of their rising empire. The British’s ambitious motives in the trading world help portray a way that the British took control of an important piece in the economy of all of the other nations present in the colonies in the time period, and shows another leading factor in the growth of the British empire.
. Maryland Toleration Act: Created in 1649 to ease tensions between Protestants and Catholics; ultimately failed and did not end bickering between the two religions . triangular trade: the trade between eastern colonies, Africa, and Europe; included an exchange of slaves to the colonies, manufactured items such as guns and alcohol from EUrope to colonies and West Africa, and crops to Europe . Mercantilism: foundation of the mercantilist theory is that a nation must export more than it imports; high value for gold, silver, and other precious metals . Navigation Acts: essentially a series of tariffs imposed upon the colonies beginning in 1651 to create an English monopoly over trade; colonists could only trade with England and had to use English
The relationships between the colonists and the British crown changed for the worse over the course of 1607 to 1763. After the Seven Year’s War was fought by colonists and won, colonists felt more as Englishmen than ever before. To understand this shift of view from patriotic to bitter relationship, we have to view the relationship from the point of a Pennsylvania farmer. Starting as a paternal and understanding relationship between the crown and the colonists, both the colonists and the crown helped turn the new world into a thriving economic center. After the British Civil War, Enlightenment thinkers started to gain movement throughout Europe, while at the same time tensions were rising for the colonists.
Freedom to Prosecute Religion Colonial America is often thought of as a safe haven from religious persecution. Future colonists had been persecuted for not accepting their countries ' religious doctrine and were willing to travel long distances in search of religious freedom. Religious freedom would still be far from grasp as Puritans would continue their homelands traditions of persecution for many more years. Puritans, unlike the Pilgrims (who sought to completely separate from the Church of England), wanted to purify the Church.
More than 80% of Americans have Puritan ancestors who emigrated to Colonial America on the Mayflower, and other ships, in the 1630’s (“Puritanism”). Puritanism had an early start due to strong main beliefs that, when challenged, caused major conflict like the Salem Witch Trials. Puritanism had an extremely rocky beginning, starting with a separation from the Roman Catholic Church. Starting in 1606, a group of villagers in Scrooby, England left the church of England and formed a congregation called the Separatist Church, and the members were called The puritans (“Pilgrims”).
Puritans; these were the people who wanted more than just change from the Church of England, so they left to the New World. Puritans were a religious group of people in England in the 1500’s who wanted to do more than simply purify the current ways of the new Church of England. Leaving to the colonies for religious freedom from the church and king, they lived out their days shaping the foundation of the colonies history. Puritanism began in England in the 16th century after King Henery created the Church of England to replace the existing church. Some basic beliefs of the Church of England are: The Bible is what contains the main beliefs of the Christian faith and the faith usually involves scripture .The
Puritans were the group of people who disagreed with the church of England’s teachings and sought to reform it. King Henry VIII only added fuel to their fire. People left England seeking religious tolerance. Puritans strongly opposed King Charles I and his decisions as ruler. Those English colonists who were not Puritans came to the New World in search of economic opportunity.
Both the Chesapeake colonies and the New England colonies were vital to Britain’s atlantic trade. They both had large populations and booming economies. However, they both eventually established their own cultures that were different from each other. The colonies’ differing beliefs, environments, and labor lead to the contrasting cultures. The New England Colonies were a Puritanical society, who preached against excess.
100 years after Columbus first arrived in the Americas, the first of 13 colonies, Virginia, was settled. Little did they know that 400 years later, these colonies would evolve and become one of the most powerful nations on Earth. With the colonists populating both southern and northern area, many aspects of the colonies changed. Not only did the colonies change because of the climate and topography (which was inevitable) but also because of the people who lived there. New England was primarily composed of people searching for religious freedom, the Southern Colonies had wealthy people looking for land to grow their plantations, and the middle colonies, the most ethnically diverse, consisting of people searching for a new and wealthier life.
Unlike, the middle colonies who settled for farming grains, and the south for profit. The Pilgrims also signed The Mayflower Compact which dictated how the colony would be ruled by majority ruled, which was the closest thing to self-government at the time; for all church going men could vote. At the time with the Puritans settling the New England colonies for their this would be considered the most religiously intolerant regions. The Puritans here were a sect of Calvinism that their views had a broad term for sinner, which means anything from being lazy to practicing another religion, like the Quakers and Baptist did, could ensue, fines, flogging; a public whipping, banishment, or even the death penalty. Compared to the other two colonial region who were more tolerant and open to other religions because of that Roger William was banished by the Puritans so he established Rhode Island in the New England for religious freedom.
