The Northwest Ordinance was enacted July 13, 1787. The Northwest Ordinance is the only reason why many of our states exist. This ordinance was an act of the Congress of the Confederation of the United States. This was a method for admitting new states to the Union from within the territory. It also listed a guaranteed bill of rights, and was adopted by the second Continental Congress.
This ordinance was for expanding the Union from within the Northwest Territory. The Northwest territory was located west of Pennsylvania, north of the Ohio River, east of the Mississippi River, and south of the great lakes. The general location today is known as the American Midwest. Until around the year 1780, the Northwest Territory was claimed by the states New York and Virginia. Soon after that, the states ceded their holdings to the central government. This was necessary for the division of the Northwest Territory to function properly.
There were three principle provisions ordained in this document. This was to help with the organization of the new states. The first principle in this document was the division of the Northwest territory. This meant that no less than three nor more than five states. Thomas Jefferson was an American founding father and was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. He was also the third person of the United States. He originally created it in 1784. He divided this territory into a bunch of self-governing districts. The ordinance stated that each district could send a representative to Congress upon its population of 20,000, and they would become eligible for statehood. Under this ordinance, the principle of granting new states equal rather than inferior was clearly established. The Land Ordinance of 1785 was significant because it was used to help lower the national debt. It also helped set up many public schools in the North which continued and set a precedent for public American education that is seen today. The most important point of the Northwest Ordinance was all the state would be impartially treated and acknowledged as American republic (261). There will be no served as the territory under colonies (261). Overall, the three points of Northwest Ordinance were all important. The three points included the clear procedure to be a state, bill of rights which assured the rights of people and state, and also the abolishment of slavery in the Northwest. However, there was one most important point resulted from this ordinance, which is all the states will acknowledge as part of the American republic and no longer under the colonies
The most important and prominent example of a success established by the Confederation Government was the resolution of a series of territorial disputes among the states, and the establishment of a process by which territories could eventually be admitted as new states, equal to the original 13, under the Land Ordinances of 1784 and 1785. The Confederation Government demanded claim of the Western states previously occupied by larger states in Congress. The Confederation controlled enough land to permit Congress to begin making policy for the Western lands. The Ordinances of 1784 and 1785 divided Western territory into ten self governing districts, each of which were given powers by the Confederation Government to “petition congress for statehood”
It was important for the new states to receive the same rights when they entered the Union as the existing states. The Northwest Ordinance set the identity for the United States in many ways. The ordinance put aside land in each township for education. It established government, voting regulations, land ownership and laid out regulations for estates. It encouraged free religion, set rules for taxation
Ratifying the Confederation Period Thanks to our victory in the Revolutionary War, America finally became an independent nation. Subsequently, we created our first official government, The Articles of Confederation. When Congress declared war on Britain in 1776, it also called out for a plan to help the states cooperate in the war effort. Franklin presented a plan of Confederation; in which Congress was given the power of planting new colonies when necessary, and implying control over the West.
There was more to consider in adding a huge swath of land to a country than just the profits. Three things were necessary to address in attempting to open the Northwest territory: Legislation for the new land, Natives Americans living in the land, and how to Americanize the new land. Before anything else, the new territory would need laws to protect and govern the people. The laws for this territory are called the Northwest Ordinance. It secured basic rights for the Americans living in the territory, but it has some clauses that are greatly important.

The Westward Expansion all started when America made the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. There were many benefits from the purchase for the US that the French didn’t realize before they sold it. The purchase gave the US access to the Mississippi river which allowed for expansion of river trade to the North and South from the center of the US. The port city of New Orleans was bought by the US and its prosperity benefited the US greatly. The US sent Lewis and Clark west to investigate the land they purchased.
During the first years of the English settlements of North America the people who immigrated from England they formed colonies that with the support of the British government. The colonist didn 't pay a lot of taxes on their trading benefits to the government. Through the years, the King and the parliament started raising taxes on almost everything that the colonist was producing in the colonies. The colonists weren 't happy with the new taxation that the king was charging to the colonies, and it led the colonist to protest at British empire. There are several reasons why the colonists revolted against the British government.
The American Revolution or also known as The War of Independence was brought on by American colonists. The colonists felt the taxations and limitations oppressed onto the Americans by British was worth fighting for their rights. The Americans had George Washington as their general, and Washington had an itch to keep the moral of the colonists alive during the hard times. In the times of The American Revolution, the Second Continental Congress emerged and voted for freedom from Great Britain. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin came together and formed a document stating the colonists’ intent to gain independence from Great Britain.

Before the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, many states own land in the area that was considered in the Northwest, is east of the Mississippi River and North of the Ohio River. When all the states were in debt from the American Revolution, the Central government offered that if the states gave up their land in the Northwest, the central government will pay their debt. This was named the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. This also created rules on creating a new state. The land that the states gave up cannot have slaves and in order an area to become a state, they must have a population of 5000 males or 60000 people.

The constitution was written because the people wanted to create a nation in which states can work together. The preamble also helps the constitution in the way that it establish justice like making laws and setting up courts that are fair and a jury system.
