The scope of practice of a family nurse practitioner enables them the ability to serve as a primary care provider for families. This includes providing care for each member of the family individually and for the entire family collectively as a whole. Family nurse practitioners typically work in either a family practice or community health setting, where they are often responsible for the care of the entire family. Within each setting, there are numerous cultural variations that a family nurse practitioner might encounter. It is important that the family nurse practitioner is able to meet the families’ and are culturally competent when doing so.

Nurse practitioners play an important role in healthcare in every state. However, each state has specific regulations pertaining to state regulations that guide prescriptive practice related to educational requirements, advance practice licensure requirements, and prescriptive authority (specifically controlled substances) of nurse practitioners. This paper will analyze the governing regulations of nurse practitioners in three states with full practice authority, reduced practice authority, and restricted practice authority. It will compare and contrast Washington D.C., New York, and Georgia, which have similar educational and licensure requirements, but vastly different approaches to the scope of practice in their respective states.

The Indiana State Board of Nursing (2011) defines advanced practice nursing as a registered nurse who has attained advanced knowledge and skills through an organized program of study. The three categories of study include nurse practitioner, certified nurse mid-wife, or clinical nurse specialist. National certification is not required for nurse practitioners completing an accredited graduate program. However, if the continuing education is part of a certificate program then a national certification is required. Although certification is not required in Indiana, Riley Hospital for Children nurse practitioners are required to certify within one year of employment.

The Nurse Practice Act is a specific set of rules and regulations. The purpose is to oversee the safe practice of nursing and safety of the public. NPA lists the standards and scope of nursing practice, along with requirements for licensure, the types of titles and licenses and educational standards. The nursing scope of practice includes the functions, actions, or procedures that nurses can legally perform (American Nurses Association 2010). As a registered nurse (RN), I must know what is within the scope of practice since I work under the direction of a licensed physician (MD) or advanced practice nurse (APN). The MD or APN may place an order that may not be within my scope of practice and performing that task may be harmful to the patient and result in loss of my license. Each state or country has their own definitions of the scope practice which are important to know as well as they may differ.

Articulation and assertion of values discuss how nurses have affirmed core values that we all strive to have to be able to provide the best quality of care. With our acquired repertoire of skills, it is essential that we utilize them to make informed decisions and collaborate with our community to promote wellness and healthy living.
