Morality- Does Murder Define an Immoral Character?
Throughout history, many scholars and common people alike have troubled themselves with the task of defining morality. What makes a human good or bad? It can be agreed that actions speak louder than words, so therefore committing crimes can show a person’s evilness. However, that is not often the case. Perhaps action alone can convince an audience of a person’s immorality, but the presentation also has a major influence on the audience 's’ opinion. In books, presentation of a character is a strategy for the author to uphold a character’s image. Such examples can be found in William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, where the authors’ presentation of Brutus and

Yet other actions also point out their unwillingness and regret for their crime. The guilt was heavily shown by George in Of Mice and Men through the characters’ actions. Right before killing Lennie, George showed his unwillingness when his “ hand shook violently,” after which he, “shivered and looked the gun, and then he threw it from him” (Steinbeck 106). George is someone, like the other guys on the ranch, who knows how to proficiently use a gun, so there was no reason for his hands to shake when holding the weapon. The only reason would be the intense emotions he felt that caused his hands to shake; his shivering confirmed that- George was in shock over what he did to his friend. In Julius Caesar, Brutus also shows concern for his friend, who he knows will be killed by the conspirators. During the meeting the eventually ended Caesar’s life, Brutus is saddened when Caesar calls him his friend. “That every like is not the same, O Caesar,/ The heart of Brutus yearns to think upon” (Shakespeare Act II Scene II, 32). In addition to that, Brutus was also the last to stab Caesar. Even though he did end up contributing to Caesar’s death, Brutus showed through his actions that he did not wholeheartedly wish for Caesar to die. By slightly emphasizing George and Caesar’s unwillingness to kill their friends, the author shows that they still had an inkling of humanity left after planning to kill …show more content…
Shakespeare and Steinbeck both use the character developement of Brutus and George to connect the readers the tragic protagonists. In Of Mice and Men, George can be seen as a kind but still rather innocent guy traveling with his disadvantaged friend. Although he may seem mature and responsible, his conversation with Lennie proves that he is still untainted by the harshness of reality. “‘Good boy! That’s fine, Lennie! Maybe you’re gettin’ better. When we get the coupe acres I can let you tend the rabbits all right. ’Specially if you remember as good as that” (Steinbeck 15). This dialogue, which he says to Lennie during their stay in the woods in the earlier chapters of the book, displayed the hope George and Lennie had of their future. If George were truly to conform to the society present in Of Mice and Men, he would act like most of the other men on the ranch- indifferently performing the same chores everyday and then spending their hard-earned money on cat houses. Later in the book, we see a very evident change; his last words to Lennie hinted at despair and hopeless, contrarily from before. “‘An’ we’d keep a few pigeons to go flyin’ around the win’mill like they done when I was a kid’ … ‘An’ it’d be our own, an’ nobody could can us. If we don’t like a guy we can say, ‘Get the hell out,’ and by God he’s got to do it.’” (Steinbeck
Moral Ambiguity An obscurity knowing of a character leads readers to think more about the person’s position in the book. Moral Ambiguity is when it is not clear that a person is positive, nor villainous. The character is portrayed as a vindictive person to the readers but a good person to themselves. In the book “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, Curley's Wife, is portrayed as a morally ambiguous character.
Wrongs of Society Unfortunately in today's society, elderly people are mistreated along with handicapped people seen as unfit and useless. In Steinbeck's novel, they show a great deal of unfairness to both humans and animals when they are no longer useful or productive to society. Although, older generations helped raise us, in society we generally do not take care of them. Animals are put down, or killed when they no longer have a purpose to their owner. Also, in the novel handicaps are looked down on because they take time to care for and are not seen as good workers.
What comes to mind when the word loyalty is mentioned? A dog, a pet, friends or family is what most people think of when the word is mentioned. However, many would not associate the word loyalty with loneliness. When John Steinbeck thought of loyalty he wrote of deep friendships and a dog and its owner’s love. Loyalty can be associated with loneliness because by the end of a friendship or family member, someone is always gone before the other, due to old age or a medical issue that has come up.
Of Mice and Men, the American Dream, was that of freedom and independence for George and Lennie. The American Dream will not work for the two of them. George has a lack of responsibility for the actions that Lennie does. George isn 't strict on Lennie like he should, which allows Lennie to do anything he wants and get away with it. Lennie was not the smartest of the two, but that doesn 't give him the authority to do bad things and not have any repercussions afterwards.
Of Mice and Men might be an old story but it stays true to its theme of friendship and conflict. In Of Mice and Men it's really about two men, Lennie and George who are faced with lots of obstacles because of their outside appearances but internally they are very opposite to their body shapes from first glance. Lennies this big tough guy but on the inside he struggles from day to day life because of his mental disability. George is vice versa just because he is small doesn't account to anything George tends to want things his way and has more of a restricted personality but Lennie and George have something in common they both have each others backs like a true friendship. Steinbeck's “ Lennie, who had been watching, imitated George exactly.
This means that Steinbeck thought that killing Lennie was the right thing to
John Steinbeck's novella 'Of Mice and Men' contains various important themes. One of the significant themes of this novella is hope, friendship and loneliness, determination that empowers a man to endeavour with a feeling of self-esteem. In this novella, Loneliness is presented to be one of the dominant themes. After reading Of Mice and Men, I felt the need to research the author. After researching the author, I realized that he based this book off of his experiences. Steinbeck grew up in Salinas, California and that is where the book takes place. Due to John Steinbeck growing up and experiencing the Great Depression, I think his inspiration to write this book came from the social and economic issues that he had witnessed. He worked closely with migrants and itinerants and that deepened the empathy for workers as well as deepening his love for writing.
After reading “Of Mice and Men,” a novella by John Steinbeck, a few essential connections can be developed from details of the setting. These connections can be found in “Paradise Lost,” a poem by Steinbeck that describes the Adam and Eve and their place in the Garden of Eden. One of the three connections that Steinbeck included in “Of Mice and Men” is the connection of temptation, a form of trickery that the serpent uses to convince Eve to eat the forbidden apple. In “Of Mice and Men,” Steinbeck includes the form of temptation of wanting to do something because of a certain reason, that has a negative effect afterwards. According to Steinbeck, “ ‘Oh!
In this scene Caesar has been murdered by the conspirators including Brutus. Brutus is one of Caesar's good friends who is driven by honor; who thought Caesar’s ambition was going to be the end of Rome. Antony is a very loyal friend of Caesar’s who does not agree with the conspirators. Brutus and Antony are both smart well thought out characters. They desire to persuade the commoners to their side of the situation.
“-I think I knowed from the very first. I think I knowed we’d never do her. He usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would” (Steinbeck 78). George wanted a better life someday for himself and for Lennie, but deep down he knew Lennie’s limitations and accepted that the dream was never meant to be.

Maturity, a long debated question, of the level of matureness or integrity a person has. Age plays a role in maturity but experiences mature a person much as they understand the world in which they live in. Age does not determine the level of maturity in person because . ‘Julius Caesar’ and ‘Henry V’ are plays whose themes are reflective of their respective contextual climates. They were both written in the time of renaissance theatre under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, who was an avid supporter of Shakespeare’s work. The plays were written consecutively, and they both present historical figures that were greatly idolised in the period in which they were composed. Both history plays convey how, on political scenery, deceit is omnipresent. In Julius Caesar, it is used to bring down the monarchial rule and to ultimately implant a new democratic government, while in Henry V, the King makes use of multiple facets of his personality among which is deceitful behavior in order to conquer France and win over
