Football is the most watched sport in America (Paulsen, 2016). Football is also a very dangerous sport and a large number of injuries occur in the National Football League each year. Will Shields, a former National Football League player once said, “Football is a violent game. We are violent men” (“Will Shields Quotes”, n.d.). More than two hundred concussions alone occurred in the National Football League last year (Mukherjee, 2017). There is more focus on the potential health consequences, especially the neurological consequences that come with playing football than there ever has been. A collective bargaining agreement is a “Written, legally enforceable contract for a specified period (usually one year), between the management of an organization and its employees represented by an independent trade union” (“collective bargaining agreement,” n.d.). However, the statement in the Collective Bargaining Agreement can be interpreted in more than one way. It could be interpreted as the team doctor’s primary duty is to the player at all times. Conversely, it could also be interpreted as the team doctor’s primary duty is only to the player when he or she is providing services to the player not when he or she is providing services to the team. The way team doctors are currently situated prevents their two roles from being legitimately distinct. Regardless of how the statement is interpreted, the team doctors are required to provide medical care that places the interest of the players above the interest of the team. This is impossible to achieve though because sometimes the doctor is providing the team with information that is used to make business decisions. The team doctor could provide the best medical care possible to the player while at the same time hurting the player’s interests by providing the team with information regarding the injury. Given the fact that the National Football League’s current medical structure has the potential to create conflicts of interest for team doctors, how should they proceed to do their
There is a misfit between individual and organizational values, largely due to the wide gap of relative power between the two levels. A stronger union will improve the organization’s public perception by addressing this misfit and realigning player and owner interests with one another. Furthermore, a more powerful union would be able to mandate third party research thus reducing the conflict of interest surrounding current NFL brain research. This independent research would provide more accurate results and allow the organization to better address player safety. Additionally, the players would benefit from an improvement in the ability to negotiate contracts and benefits for players.
Football is a violent game and every one involved in it knows that there will certainly be injuries. However, most injuries manifest themselves immediately, are orthopedic, not life-threatening, and with the help of nature and orthopedic medicine, will sooner or later heal. Injury to the brain is another matter.
Bargaining power of customers: The main objective is to look at the power of the consumer to affect pricing and quality. For any industry, the consumer has the ability to harm/ help financially any company. In the NFL, the games are mainly for the consumers (fans). In the NFL it is hard to have high bargaining power of customers because it doesn’t matter if the team plays terrible, the fan always will support his/her team.
Since American football star Michael Webster’s death, Nigerian-American physician, Bennet Omalu performed an autopsy that surprisingly showed his cause of death was from sever damage of the frontal lobe of Webster’s brain. What happened to Webster’s brain is now called chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE, which is a degenerative disease. This “sickness” is due to the repeated impact of football related concussions. Since the discovery the NFL and all the players have taken serious repercussions in the attempt of lowering the amount of potential concussions. The sport of football might appear dangerous but now the safety measures have been and are still improving.
An NFL football player will endure somewhere between 900 to 1500 blows to their head over the course of a single season. With an immense amount of blows like this comes an immense amount of damage to a player’s brain. This extensive amount of brain damage has been decided, by Dr. Bennet Omalu, to result in chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. Over the course of these discoveries and much controversy, the NFL has been targeted, denied all accusations, done very few things to lessen the risk of concussions in football, and the risks and number of concussions have steadily increased throughout the league’s
According to Dylan Bennett, most NFL players that know that most player that have medicine The National Football League (NFL) needs to change their policy on drug for players that have reason for them. One reason why they need to change it is so players that use prescription drugs can still play in the NFL instead of just being suspended and fine for taking their medication perceived by their doctor. This case will be shown because players have lost a large amount of time form their careers or have lost their careers due to the drug policy of the NFL. What is the NFL drug policy and when it came into effect? What are other sports drug policies?
709-735). This high occurrence rate suggests that sports regulatory boards must come up with more systematic techniques in protecting the players from a concussion and its consequences. Furthermore, the prevalence of concussions in contact sports, especially in football, proves that the NFL should admit that concussions are a serious issue in football. The obvious short-term effects of concussions, together with the prevalence of concussions in football, must have influenced the NFL regarding how they handle violence within football. Instead, the NFL continued to market the violence in
