Student, Ross Taylor, author of “Paintball: Promoter of violence or healthy fun?” writes for all ages about the game of paintball. He claims that paintball could be a fun and healthy and not a violent game. His audience for this passage is people who haven’t played paintball but, could also be for those who have played. Taylor produces a well put passage using common ground, psychic space, ethos, pathos, and logos to show how paintball is a fun, healthy sport.
Throughout Taylor’s writing, there is very little common ground or psychic space found. If the reader has played paintball before then, common ground is expressed through shared experiences in paragraph one. This is where he shares his stories of playing paintball and, how fun it was

Cause and effect, compare and contrast, definition, example, and statistics are all used to show logos within the essay. Compare and contrast is what seem to be found in this passage the most. The title itself is comparing paintball to violence and then also healthy fun. One of the biggest comparisons is at the end of paragraph eight when Taylor is talking about people comparing paintball players to killing. When in yet the paintball players weren’t the one killing people it was actually the bowling players. The game of paintball is also compared and contrasted to many other sports within this article. In paragraph three it compares paintball to the game of capture the flag because in both game you are on teams and try not to get tagged or shot. Paragraph nine by saying “they want to celebrate together as a team, just as softball and soccer” because paintball just like any other team wants to be there for each other after games. Definition was harder to find, but the two that stuck out were in paragraph two, four, and three. Paragraph three explains the game of capture the flag while paragraph two and four tell about paintball. Taylor uses quotes such as “Paintball is a fun, athletic, mentally challenging recreational activity” (para 2) and "The activity of paintball is athletically challenging” (para 4) to explain that paintball can be a healthy activity while having fun. The quote in paragraph four also provides an example of cause and effect towards paintball. If it is “athletically challenging” (para 4) that means you more than likely get a workout with it hereby shows how it is healthy fun. Statistics are located in paragraph seven stating that “85 percent of those injuries (eye injuries) weren’t wearing the required safety goggles” which leads us to cause and effect. In result of not wearing protective gear you can end up hurt thereby, making paintball
In this article, the author explains why sports are very dangerous but also very beneficial. He starts off with his own personal stories and gets into describing how American football is seen as remarkably dangerous, and he includes evidence such as the violence the sport brings. He especially talks about the risks of brain damage that comes with the sport, including when “group of past players...sued the NFL for not properly informing players about the risks of brain damage during their careers”.
The book highlights the good and the bad of the sport. For someone who may not be too interested in it, or just has to read it for a history class, he made it entertaining. Giving not only a history lesson on the sport but just as much on the working class of America and the emerging commercialized leisure’s and shifting social classes in the nineteenth century. Gorn is able to interweave social and political issues of the times all told with characters as colorful and wild as the early days of this country. Men crave the order of violence with rules and attach elevated importance to such contests in part because so much of life is entirely unjust and oppressive.
In this part, twelfth graders have to assassinate a person, so they wait at his house this is bad for their mental health because their sleep in a van and a van is not very comfortable, and they won't get much sleep because if they have to go to school they won't be able to focus and keep falling asleep and if they won't be able to focus than their grade will go down, and they will get stressed which is horrible this is an example of how role-playing games with simulated violence are diverting for kids by how it impacts a person's mental health. Another example is in paragraph 11 which says“ In the late innings of Killer season, some kids occasionally sleep in the deeper recesses of St. Ann’s itself,” in this paragraph is how some people stay at the school because the school is a safe zone where people can not attack this is bad for their mental health because where are they going to sleep, and they are probably locked this is bad for their mental health because they would not get enough sleep and not be able to focus on school which would cause their grades to drop, and they would be stressed also some people don't handle the dark well and if the light is shut off they probably won't handle it well and panic. This shows that role-playing games with simulated violence are diverting for kids. It is shown by how it affects a person's mental
Summary “Children Need to Play, Not Compete,” by Jessica Statsky is a thoughtful insight on the competitive sports for children. She is of the view that the competitive sports can ruin the enjoyment that games are supposed to provide. These methods of playing the games like adults can prove to be lethal for physical and psychological health. The author quotes from an authentic source that “Kids under the age of fourteen are not by nature physical.” (Tutko)
The dangers of football can be decreased by increasing the padding in the protective garments for football players, providing education for football players on the dangers and injuries that can occur, and having daily medical checkups for the players. These tactics will protect the football player from the dangers of the sport of football. The sport of football has many risks and dangers; however, if the protective gear of the players had more padding, than the players would be more protected. The padding would create a small barrier between colliding players and would absorb some of the force from the tackle. In the article, “High School Football’s Benefits Outweigh the Risks,” Ed.
The article “High-Jinks: Shoot-Out” by Guy Martin, researches the story of several New York High Schools, participating in an end of year activity that is involved with mediocre violence, made for kids to have some fun with their town, and their classmates. These role playing games are very beneficial for students to participate in, because they teach kids that team work, and extraordinary skills are needed to “survive”. Role playing games with simulated violence are diverting for kids, because they teach and allow kids to be boisterous. The game allows the students to plan, organize, and concoct a plan, for a game that involves nearly the whole city and school. As seniors in highschool prepare for graduation and adulthood, this game gives them the freedom to be kids again.
Health and contact sports are something parents worry about as over 500 deaths in the past 3 years from contact sports alone are making parents stand out against these sports and if the government doesn 't do anything about it the number of 7% overall contact sports drop will just keep getting lower and lower each time. Dr. William Speight also had this to say “Many other kids have suffered paralyzing spinal injuries”(Pennington). Kids being paralyzed is the fear for many athletes these days and the number f kids getting paralyzed has increases 2% which is equivalent to about 8,000 kids each year which is crazy to think about kids can 't play sports for the rest of thrie and maybe not be able to live their life because of it so next you hear mom or dad i wanna play sports your answer should be a simple NO. Kids under 10 need to stop playing contact sports because 45% of kids under 10 getting hurt are from contact sports and 5% of the time its ending that kids chances to play sports in the feature, Not to mention contact sports can also make kids go to their fullest and being burned out and although contact provide some kids will useful tools in life most of the time there is more negative than positive. Health, Age, Contact, parents, are some of the many reasons contact sports can be very dangerous for the youth.
Contact sports involve touching, hitting, or banging other children, which is often why children get hurt in these sports. Among teens, concussions and death have happened. While these sports increase the strength of teenagers as they partake in a school activity, the risk of injury and death is great. The health benefits of contact sports do not outweigh the risks of playing them. The leading causes of death and accidents in sports are caused by concussions.
For example, “Concussions have been a concern for professional athletes, but they’ve become more common among youth players too. Between 2001 and 2009, the number of kids under 19 visiting emergency rooms for concussions each year increased by 62 percent.” (Source #1). If kids didn’t play football, then nobody would have to worry about kids damaging their brain. Another example, “In many sports, physical contact is part of the game.
The most important word is “sport” because it shows how General Zaroff can justify hunting people, it summarizes the story in one word, and it shows the mentality of people who only hunt for the sport of it have.
Children who participate in competitive sports at a young age experience more serious negative impacts than positives, including a risk of severe injury, losing
The writer further explains that the idea of winning sometimes causes severe injuries that may prevail for a lifetime. In these games, a child may crash into one another accidently that creates a fear of getting hurt. Just to protect themselves some children back out of many games and are left behind when it comes to the development of their bodies. The rest of the children who are part of these games are in a constant pressure from their parents and coaches that cause the stress and anxiety. Furthermore, the writer states that this “sport becomes job like”.
“In the U.S., about 30 million children and teens participate in some form of organized sports, and more than 3.5 million injuries each year” claims Stanford Children’s Health. It’s definitely true that competitive sports can cause all sorts of injuries from big to small. The media teaches people simply that sports leads to horrific injuries and can cause stress, but what the mainstream media hardly discusses are the great benefits of competitive sports. While there may be some negatives to competitive sports, that’s just life, and to add on to that; there are plenty of benefits which are sure to override to media’s facts. Kids should play competitive sports because competitive sports teach children powerful life lessons, contributes to their social and mental stability, and because of the physical gain competitive sports provides.
There are games that literally replicate and give people the ability to score points for doing the very same thing that these students are doing inside schools, where you get extra points for finishing someone off who’s lying there begins for their life.” ( 6) There are several ideas that say young people benefit from these violent video games “Surprisingly, playing video games can help our physical, mental, and emotional health.” It helps them to improve hand eye coordination and thinking ability. These benefits are not worth the risk of being influenced by violent video games. (7) All in all the research and officials say that violent video games affect how children, teenagers and young adults act.
Research shows that at least 83% of children in the US aged between 8-12 years are involved in video gaming once a month. This elevated number of video gaming has had its fair share of effects on its consumers. For instance, video games have positively influenced children to work together in completing various tasks, and often improve a child’s thinking capacity, especially through solving puzzles (Anderson et al, 2007). However, the contentious issue has been the effects of violent games on children, which are often negative to their well-being. In short, violent video games increase the aggressiveness of a child, and may eventually cause mental ill health.
