Through this graphic novel, Marjane Satrapi shows Iran through her eyes as a young girl and as a young woman in two separate periods of her life. Her life as a young girl is engulfed as a revolution wages on through her streets. Marjane Satrapi experiences a wide range of life experiences and situational hazards. In Iran she bought punk CDs and partied as kids her age blew themselves up as suicide bombers promised paradise in the afterlife, which shows the different life she leads in comparison with other kids. Marjane Satrapi is an outspoken female, who is not afraid to stand up for something she believes in. As she grew up, Islamic Fundamentalists created strict moral and dress codes for the people of Iran. As a woman, she was forced to wear a hijab in a certain manner. Tim LaRocca Persepolis KPA In the book “Persepolis”, the author Marjane Satrapi, uses excellent diction to help the reader obtain knowledge and gain understanding of her main purpose in a specific passage or chapter of the book. Despite her specific word choice, it is challenging for readers to truly understand her main purpose only through literary terms and devices used throughout the book. Therefore, to help increase the readers ability to understand the main purpose of a certain specific passage, Satrapi uses an extensive amount of precise graphic elements. For example, in the passage “Kim Wilde”, Satrapi is able to express her main purpose that when governments tend to restrict the people too much, and become oppressive, the people tend to resist their law and rebel against the law by using the graphic elements of shading and facial expressions to express her purposes in and easier and clearer visual way.
Persepolis In Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, we see juxtaposition being used throughout the book. Juxtaposition is shown in Persepolis numerous of times and how it can help shows the reader I will be arguing on how Persepolis shows juxtaposition in the novel and show how it helps show the author’s message. Book one of Persepolis on page 6 we see an image of Marjane standing in the middle and on the left it shows a hammer, ruler, and some cogs and on the right it shows some art. In the text she is talking about the veil and whether or not if she liked it or not also showing being confused because of her blank or lost expression.

It is very rare for middle eastern countries to disrespect a ruler, let alone speak out on their opinion. In the book Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, the Satrapi family were adversaries of the Shah. This graphic novel is a story of small Marji, who had to face formidable obstacles through her childhood. Living in Iran surrounded by war and thousands of deaths, inspired the little girl to fight for her rights. On page 102 of the book, we can see a powerful juxtaposition, where both of the panels have a profound effect on the reader. Looking at the elements of a graphic novel, Satrapi uses caption, movement and mood in both of the panels in order to enhance the significance on the narrative.

This loss of faith causes Marji to experience disillusionment and a loss of identity, which greatly shapes her character. Yet, it is what many people believe to be true, even despite the overwhelming lack of evidence. One of the more accepted stereotypes are those of the people of Iran, in Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, the author tries to redefine Iranian stereotypes by illustrating that when individuals and their hopes are taken into account, stereotypes are not as simple as they seem. Throughout the book, Satrapi portrays, dispels, confirms, and challenges stereotypes all to show that people are much deeper than stereotypes and to get to that truth, sometimes rejecting stereotypes is necessary.

Everything can be viewed from two perspectives; A fist fight, a murder, bullying, just to name a few situations. This is still the case with Iran and it’s people. Iran and its neighboring countries are often portrayed negatively as terrorist, or failed nations. This is not always the truth, however, and one can learn that through Marjane’s coming of age story, Persepolis. The personal nature of the story is told through Marjane’s loss of innocence, her opinions on religion, and her observation of the prominent gender roles.
