Reflective Essay: What Writing Means To Me

After reading Stephen King's essay "Reading to Write" (72) it opened my eyes for writing. Although being a professional novelist isn't a goal I want to pursue in my life, writing is something I will need to learn how to do with good form. When it comes to the writing department, it's not one of my best skills. King says, "Good writing, teaches the learning writer about style, graceful narration, plot development, the creation of believable characters, and truth-telling" (73). I will try my best to become a good writer.

My history as a writer has been a bit of a struggle of slow development. From a young age I had a hard time with spelling and this is still a trouble area for me, even with the help of autocorrect. As I grew in age and as a writer my problematic area became not including enough nitty gritty details. My bad experiences that I recall would always involve the start of writing because I struggle with beginning paragraphs. Also, I tend to use the ending paragraph to just repeat myself, so overall my first and last paragraphs are usually shit.

The weekly reading assignments were very helpful. Some of the topics were great refreshers of common mistakes made when writing; these knocked some of the cobwebs in my mind loose. The other topics with sample writings gave me an idea of what to do. The instructor feedback and the revision recommendations were probably the most helpful tools in my composition process.

Analyzing, writing, reading, and participating are the key factors you need to be good at in order to pass an English class. As I 'm going into my freshman composition class, these skills will help me improve my writing skills. In High School, I never planned ahead of time, but this will change as I go to college. I will take steps in advance to be successful in my freshman composition class. When I was in High School one of my teachers told me that one of my problems was going off topic.

Good writing stems from a strong foundation of reading skills. I remember sitting in the library of Griswold Elementary School listening to the librarian Mrs. Church telling us how if we are good readers we are good writers. As the group of eager little children that we were, writing was something that we loved to do and participated in often, so a chance of becoming better at it just made us want to read more. In this same library, the PTO held the annual Scholastic Book Fair, this event allowed kids to browse a selection of books and develop a understanding of the personal book genre that they enjoy. As children, you love to read and are encouraged to do so by your parents, friends and teachers.

By enrolling in next year’s AP Language & Composition course I hope to have the ability to learn more about the components and elements which create our writing. My plan is to gain more knowledge regarding the details of the English Language and how to have the ability to perfect my writing using more advanced components. Although this year, in AP Literature & Composition we dedicated much of time to analysis and a finding of a work through literary devices, I also want to have the opportunity to learn more about the elements of English composition. I want to have the ability to apply more advanced techniques and elements to my writing in order to become a better writer and student. In this course, I hope that within this course I am challenged

I have enjoyed this class. My big take from this course will be the improvements had to my writing process. Learning items such as brainstorming, clustering, outlining and the usefulness of a first draft, I feel my writing is improved. This will fulfill the last requirement of the course, as I have completed and submitted all the others. Thank you for an enjoyable and beneficial eight weeks together.

And also persuading the teacher that I have done my home work is like I am talking with him and telling how I see the author feelings. Not only did I learn to speak in letters but this class also make me practice my writing skills. Most of the work that we need to do in this class all of the requires to make good replies not only speaking but mostly to be written I sincerely do not think I am a good writer but this class had help me become a better one. I learn from the teacher that what I write it should stay as it is because the way that I am putting my words that is how I want the people to hear me.

Like I explain before, I like to make my reader feel my words and illustrate in their minds what they read. As a free writer I like to transmit a positive attitude with my words, I like to practice the many ways I can use a word, and I like to think that I am still trying o find my voice as a writer because I am still learning new things every day. I have grown as a reader because of this course, this course has allowed me to work at my own pace and broaden my genre of interests. This course has taught me to look past the main themes made in novels and understand the reasoning why the author decided to write the work. The strengths I have developed while conquering this course will help me in the future as the course improved my understanding on grammar, plagiarism and the overall expectations on essay writing. I have also developed the skill to read at a faster rate, as the course did not give an overabundance of extra time. The area I will continue to pursue to become a better reader is to continue reading when the course is over to keep myself familiar with punctuation uses such as

Writing is like a way for me to get all those possibilities, scenarios, ideas, and what if questions down on paper because it’s a way for me to express myself permanently. Before I took this writing course, I felt writing was not necessary for my education. In my writing 200 class, I have learned how to fix run on sentences, comma splices, fragments, and improve my grammar. I have improved my writing significantly, but I still have some work to do. I have been working on my writing and know I am ready to succeed at the next level because in 200 I learned how to proper use of transitions, and correct placement of commas.

The majority of the writing I do in my everyday life is at school. I use writing to take notes, write papers, and do homework. I rarely write at home because I don’t have a reason to. The only writing I do at home would be to finish homework or to text. I would probably write more at home if I could think of what to write about, it’s really hard for me think of what to write.

On the first day that you mentioned that we had to select goals to reach by the end of the semester. I was rather hesitant about it. I did not believe that this would help me become a better writer. However, throughout the semester while I continued to do the process to reach the goals I set for myself, I finally saw the point. Although, at times I was dreading the extra work I set for myself, it was paying off within my grades.

I am an immigrant in the United States, so everyday my writing and speaking in English is always an important challenge for me during working and studying. Writing and speaking in English help me not only for my socializing and working but also for my teaching and raising the kids in the U.S. Moreover, I do not want to stop my challenge, so I have decided to go back to school to continue my graduate program at CSUS. Then, this English 220W course is so important for me to improve my writing in the discipline as my graduate project in the future. Being working more than 16 years with Department of Water Resources, I have written a lot of daily reports and sometime memorandum and some parts of the specifications.
