Before receiving this assignment I was living the dream. I was playing college basketball and living with two of my best friends and teammates. The night before we were first informed about the M.I.R.R.O.R. assignment I injured my knee for the third time, and my life completely turned upside down. I have been forced to move back in with my parents in Ankeny and have needed help with almost every daily task of my life. This reflection on my inner responses comes during a month-long period where my environment has drastically changed, and will include insight from my mother who has been helping me every step of the way. We begin with the injury. My role as a scout team player usually means I will only play at the end of games if we are winning or losing by more than 20 points. Unfortunately, the case this time was losing by 20 points. All it took was cutting a …show more content…
Their coach, Bob Huggins, ran over to his player as he writhed in pain on the floor and laid next to him in consolation (The YouTube video will bring you to tears). My dad and I watched in amazement as Bob Huggins, the hard-nosed, tough-guy coach was brought to tears. Seven years later now I was being consoled the same way. My dad could see that my head was going 100 miles per hour. I had to come to the realization that my basketball career was over, and that he would never coach me again. My face showed hysterical crying and his hug was the only comfort that could provide any sympathy. The players came into the room and saw the redness in my eyes and wet cheeks and consoled me with compassionate hugs that I will never forget. Minutes later, I laid across the backseat of my mom’s car being pulled away from my independent easy-going lifestyle and being taken to my new life for the upcoming
The True Diary of Luke Skewis By; Luke Skewis Hi I’m Luke Skewis. I’m a 5’7, Sophomore at Negaunee High School. The stories you are about to read and very important lessons I learned from my friends, family, and coaches.
Anias Moore Oct. 26, 2015 Never as it seems The heart in my chest is racing faster than formula one cars. I still cannot believe I’m at basketball practice today with an injured ankle running drills as if I’m running for my life. I feel very weak in the knees and hunched over trying to catch my breath without causing too much trouble.
My teammates tackled me celebrating, leaving the ball in the back of the net and the goalie with her head between her hands. The scoreboard ticked the last few seconds away before letting out a sound of excitement that was prior a sound of disappointment. Losing in the sectional finals was devastating, but it motivated me in the off season. Coaches always say “we can learn from this loss” and I never took it seriously. Our failure set us up for more success than imagined.
Sophomore year I was playing at a soccer tournament with my old team. I was playing a great game even though the score was not reflecting my hard work. Towards the end of the game I jumped up caught the ball landed, my body went one way and my legs went the other, then I fell to the ground. Everyone around me had heard a pop, I knew it was my ACL. From this moment in my soccer career I knew I needed to be determined and to be focused on my recovery in order to get back out there.
At the time we were fighting for our team 's playoff lives and if we wanted any chance of going there, we needed to win this game and we did, in overtime. Once it was all over and set in stone, I just collapsed to the ground in exhaustion and just completely overwhelmed with emotion.
The transition from eighth grade to ninth grade is one of the most difficult but unforgettable things a student must do in his adolescence. For me, it was filled with new opportunities of taking Ap classes and joining clubs. One of these cubs was Youth and Government (Y&G). For as long as I can remember my brother, Riad, has boasted about how amazing Y&G is and how it has changed his life. My brother is three years older then me, so as a freshman he was a senior in Y&G.
Our athletic director got wind and personally drove and picked me up and dropped me off at the site with the rest of my team. It was incredible to see someone go that far out of their way for some scrawny little sophomore who might have gotten moved up to varsity a little too soon. But, I wasn’t the only one would could tell a story similar to that one. That man instilled the passion inside me to try to be close to the man he
New season, new team, and new coaches, who seemed very unexperienced, they were a couple, and they were engaged. I knew that they were going to need assistance with this group of girls. This year was the first time that I was playing basketball again after my yearlong ankle injury and I was eager to have an amazing season, but our team had to work together. The start of the season was very exciting because I was voted captain of the Lady Mustangs.
I have been waiting since the start of summer for this day, the day to go against Topeka West the school that have been talking stuff for the longest. There was so much hype about this game and it was finally here, when the bell ringed at the end of the day i rushed out of class and got on the bus to head over to chandler our practice field. When we got there we all the football players loaded off the bus and when we got off there was a table of chips, water, gatorade,PB & J and fruit snacks so we didn’t play on an empty stomach. After we ate and got ready coach talk to us for a little bit and then we got on the bus to head to Hummer sports park, it was a loud bus
The ironic part is it sparked something in me; I was determined to heal quickly and push myself past my limits. In the end, I became more aggressive on the field and one of the best players on my team. The coaches noticed this huge change and awarded me the Coaches’ Award at the end of the season. Knowing I had more potential, I pushed myself even further and my talents were recognized by the new coach my senior year. I achieved my goal of starting every game and played a majority of the eighty minutes of regulation time.
“Let’s go rams!!” was all you could hear coming in to the locker room, hundreds of family and friends along with recruiters outside anxiously waiting for the number one team in Florida to face the second seat it was a much anticipated game and the moment was finally here. We sat in a circle on our chairs listening to the game plan along with a motivational speech from the coach, I’m sure most of us weren’t even listen we were just dying to get out on the court and for one final time show everyone why we were the number one seat in Florida! Finally, all the talking stops and the time has come to work our way to the court as soon as they say “Your Riviera Rams” we all break out in full sprints out of the locker room on to the court with nothing
Everybody is surrounding me. Tears filled my eyes and one of my teammate’s mom comes and says, “I 'm going to go run to the store and get some ice.” My dad grabbed some tissues from his car and I put them in my nose to stop the blood from going on the ground and I layed my head back and pinched right above where the ball hit me. When the ice arrived my dad was holding the ice on my nose. My dad then called my mom and asked if she can pick me up and take me to the doctor.
My ACL Tear Journey At The Hospital A quick turn on a soccer field led me to the worst experience in my life. A while back in my sophomore year I tore my ACL while I was practicing for my first soccer game of the school year. I made a quick turn without positioning my feet correctly on the ground. I thought that I broke my knee, but I never knew that after that day I would have experienced the worst day a month after on February 15th.
In the 2016-2017 basketball season, my dad became my basketball coach. I knew going into the season my dad was going to be harder on me because I was his daughter. It was really hard to not take his comments personally and to remember that he was just my coach. I had to constantly remind myself that I had to respect him like a coach and he was my dad. That year, I learned to respect my dad on a whole different level.
