I had no interests in sports until I realized that I was good at sprinting. After about 5 months of practice Monday through Saturday, I was the second fastest 7th grader 100m sprinter in the team and city! I was surprised at how well I can run and how good it feels to be running so fast. This is why I am writing about track and field as my passion. How has this passion affected my life so far? To me, running is the greatest feeling I could ever feel. In my elementary days I knew I was the fastest kid on the playground. So naturally when I got to high school track was a must for me. My first track meet I was so nervous it felt like my heart was in my stomach. Then as I set myself up in my blocks, close my eyes, and wait for the gun to go off it was like everything went quiet.
As it is clear that the passion wasn’t just any passion, it was strong enough to pass it on to their offspring. Just as she would sit with her father to watch baseball, “recalling the Dodgers of his childhood,” me and my mother would sit and watch Track and Field and she would compare todays runners to the runners she remembered from her childhood. At a young age I also learned track and field terms just as she did when writing stats for her book. Another similarity we share is how the passion is carried through out a generation. My mother passed it to me and I hope to pass it on to my kids.
My passions are Lacrosse, Reading, and Family. It’s important to have passions because it makes you who you are. I like lacrosse because it’s a new sport with new rules and new everything to me. I like learning all about it. My team has a lot of people, so I can make new friends.
The one extracurricular activity that has become a main priority in my life is my horses and barrel racing. Riding horses has become a stress reliever and a favorite pass time. It has become not only a sport, but a lifestyle. I began riding when I was only three years old. My mother bought me my very first pony and taught me how to ride.
I had ideas, but I didn’t have anything I was extremely passionate about yet. My junior year, while I was going through a rough patch in my life, I started to work at a daycare to get my mind off things and make a couple extra dollars. After only a couple shifts at the daycare, my passion was incredibly clear… teaching children. I was able to help children who needed me and it made me feel an incredible sense of worth at a time when I felt worthless. The way their problems were so small, the way they smile endlessly, and the way they were so innocent and untouched by the troubles of the world made me want to always be around them.
It’s made me want to compete even more and, I want to win! As s dancer you never know what opportunities you’ll act so you have to be very versatile. You never know who’s watching you. I do almost every style of dance. Ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, musical theater, and a little bit of acro.
It has definitely made me not want to drugs or alcohol because I do not want to hinder my performance when I run. Also, it has influenced what I do on Friday nights. I do not go to football games, even though I want to, because I have to get sleep at night and be well rested in the morning when I have to be at the school around six in the morning, or sometimes even before then, to go to my meet on every Saturday morning throughout the cross country season. I want to be the most prepared each Saturday I run and that takes sacrifice and saying no to harmful things that may affect my body in order to better prepare me for a
As I ran across the finish line for the last time I could not help but smile; all the memories and lessons learned from my years on cross country and track flashed before my eyes. Salem Cross Country and Track has impacted and shaped me into a leader, friend, daughter, and student. The competition and friendship I found on the cross country and track team is amazing and has aided me in personal growth. The challenge of running is something that I have learned to cherish the most during my years as a high schooler as it taught me to always work hard.
In life I value success, balance, freedom, resilience and my well-being. These values will influence my career because, when choosing a career, it is important to have values. People who choose careers that are aligned with beliefs and values are more likely to find contentment and success in their
Finding one passion could be tricky. Sometimes we confuse passion with skills, passion is something that you do and enjoy no matter how tired or even if it doesn’t make you a millionaire. Skills are something that you are good at but you don’t enjoy, one will continue on this path because we need to pay our bills. This doesn’t make it right or wrong but we should be happy with ourselves doing what we enjoy.
All through school, I would find myself actively participating in one sport to another. I loved being active and thinking only of what I wanted to do. Life has a way of becoming a reality. The choices I made during my younger years have followed me to my current years. The busyness of work, family, and children have restricted my own freedom of time.
The Article “Finding Flow” by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, expresses the choice we have in life to live or die until the end of days. He shows how we take control of our own destiny, and to not let distractions get in the way of our accomplishment. By saying this he means don’t waste your potential by letting side issues get in the way. In the article Csikszentmihalyi mentions a study held in a factory where most welders hated their jobs and found no passion in it.
My passion for track and field began with a Nike advertisement. At age ten, I opened the newspaper to a two-page spread of the hometown distance running legend Steve Prefontaine overlaid by a paragraph of inspirational copy. It concluded asking, “Where is the Next Pre?” The story of his small town Oregon roots, gutsy racing style, and ambition to be the best resonated with me like nothing ever had before. I told myself I was the next Pre, and then tore off for my first run through the streets of Eugene, Oregon – “Tracktown USA”.
