Hunter Blalock Mr N Bradsher English IV Honors Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. What about Death? Chronic diseases affect approximately 133 million Americans each year (National Health Council 1). Even more, are mortally wounded. All of these patients will most likely have to endure unnecessary pain and suffer a horrible end. Most of them do not want to go down the spiralling road of needless pain and have to face what these diseases will do in their last months or years. Why should doctors and Americans who have not been through these events be the ones to stop them if they do not want to go through all that trauma of these diseases or even injuries? They shouldn’t. That is why assisted suicide needs to be made legal in all of the United States. Everyone’s view of euthanasia is different. Some think it is best for what the patients want and give them that, others have their religious values to speak out against assisted death. Religions like Christianity and Catholics believe that assisted suicide violates the sanctity of life. The Mormon communities believe “Euthanasia is condemned. Anyone who takes part in euthanasia, including assisted suicide, is regarded as having violated the commandments of God” (Religion and Spirituality 1). All these views are respected, but what is important is the value is what each terminally-ill and injured patient want out of the rest of their life. On the contrary, there are beliefs that no one should allow anything like
Introduction People have moral and ethical values that assist them in making decisions about their healthcare on a daily basis. What if a person found out that they had a terminal illness and only had months to live? What if those few months would be filled with treatments, pain and suffering, tear filled family members, and high cost medical bills? Physician- assisted suicide remains a debated topic which causes physicians, nurses and those involved to take a look at what they value and what they are willing to do in order to carry out a patient’s wishes.
I understand that they are in severe pain but if you just kill/euthanize them, then you are denying them of their final stage of growth and what lesson(s) they are going to learn at the final stages of their life .Because I think that it is during a terminal and incurable illness or something that you know is going to change your life, that people actually sit down and think about the way they have lived their life, think about the wrongs that they have done, and think of how they are going to prepare themselves, their family, and loved ones for their death. Not all people make use of this opportunity, but the ones that do usually try to build up or maybe even rebuild their relationships with their loved ones, and this opportunity will somehow give them a greater purpose in life. Therefore we should recognize the importance of the patient.so in conclusion euthanasia should be illegal and you should also know that God does not give anyone more than they can handle and that life is a sacred gift that god gave us because we deserved it and even I you are not religious or you do not believe in god life is still a sacred thing that should be appreciated and not abused. Therefore euthanasia should not be legal anywhere in the
Physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia has been one of the most debated subjects in the past years. There are resilient advocates on both sides of the debate for and against physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia. Advocates of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide believe it is a person ’s right to die when faced with terminal illness rather than suffer through to an unpleasant demise. Whereas, opponents contend that euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide is not only equivalent of murder, but it is ethically and morally incorrect.
In my religion, it is against the bible to commit suicide. So, if any person chooses to commit suicide or choose assisted suicide, then they would be going against the bible. By being against physician-assisted suicide, it reflects that I am pro-life and believe that all lives matter from when they are conceived to when they die. My family believes in the bible and believe that assisted suicide
Doctors should have responsibility of helping the ill patients to get better physically. Physicians are the icon of peace and generous within the society since their job is to solve the physical pain of the patients. In allowing physician-assisted suicide, the duty of physicians is misread. Society and law are saying that physician’s duty is no longer helping patients, but they can also easily put an end to patient’s life. In the New York Times article “Doctor-Assisted Suicide Is Unethical and Dangerous”, Ira Byock states, “people who are poor, or old and frail, or simply have long-standing disabilities, may worry that when they become acutely ill, doctors might see their lives as not worth living and compassionately act to end their supposed misery”.
Patients also must be mentally competent about what they are doing. " Two doctors must confirm the diagnosis and determine that patients are capable of making their own health decisions" ( 'Death with Dignity ' Laws Offer Compassionate Option). Death with dignity should be legal in every state. It is merciful and should be the choice of no one other than the patient.
Although, some people are against assisted suicide, because of their religious beliefs, lack of doctors training, and medication costs. According to Marilyn Golden “There is a widespread public that those opposed to legalization of assisted suicide in California are religious conservatives” (828). Some religious people don’t like assisted suicide because; they think it’s wrong for a person to take away the patient’s life. A psychiatrist named Herbert Hendin, argues that there’s lack of training of doctors, “Studies show that the less physicians know about palliative care, the more they favor assisted suicide or euthanasia, the more
Euthanasia, commonly referred to as mercy killing, is the exercise of ending lives of those with terminal conditions or agonizing pain. The practice of euthanasia is permitted in certain places such as the Netherlands, Belgium, and some parts of Canada. Although some view Euthanasia as wrong and unethical, others believe that it is a natural right every person is born with. Therefore, Euthanasia should be legalized for those ailing with little hope because the quality of a patient’s life diminishes, it could be a welcoming relief for families, and a patient has the right to die. As patients go through extensive care, like advanced medical support and artificial nutrients, their quality of life changes.
For Hindus, euthanasia infringes upon several fundamental ideas, like ahimsa, karma, and dharma. According to Christianity, life is a gift from God, created in his image, and imbued with the Holy Spirit. Therefore, euthanasia is an offense against God’s creation and the Holy Spirit. Christian scripture provides textual evidence in support of this perspective.
However, not everybody shares the same morals so this cannot really be argued in the sense of creating a law of it. Also, people don’t think the government should assist in ending someone’s life, and I believe that one is all up to the patient them self, they don’t know the pain they constantly have to go through day by day. A lot of people also make the argument of “they could find a cure for it” and that just raises false hopes in a sense of already having to live with it and just losing faith in being cured. It also lowers health care cost and people may take advantage for health care cost containment. Although it may not lower it too much, it still lowers the cost of healthcare
In this case, and many others worldwide, physician assisted suicide is morally permissible at all ages for anyone with a terminal illness with a prognosis of 6 months. This is supported by act based utilitarianism and the idea of maximizing pleasure and reducing pain and suffering on an individual circumstance. By allowing a terminal patient to die a less painful death, in control of the situation, and with dignity, the patient will have amplified
Euthanasia, also known as assisted suicide, is the act of permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured patients. This is never suggested by the caretaker rather than requested by the patient or their family. Few areas such as the Netherlands have already legalized this practice. This debate, as split as a fork in the road, is over whether or not this approach should be legalized worldwide on stances regarding religion, ethics, and self choice. I see this as being extremely unethical on both religious and social morality levels.
Everyone has the right to choose to live or die. Death is part of life that can 't be avoided. This is a natural phenomenon in the process of life is birth, aging, illness and death. Euthanasia, in some words "Mercy Killing or Physician assisted Suicide. " Euthanasia is to help patients who despair and cannot be cured to die peacefully and to have free from suffering.
The Right to Die has been taking effect in many states and is rapidly spreading around the world. Patients who have life threatening conditions usually choose to die quickly with the help of their physicians. Many people question this right because of its inhumane authority. Euthanasia or assisted suicide are done by physicians to end the lives of their patients only in Oregon, Washington, Vermont, Montana, New Mexico and soon California that have the Right to Die so that patients don’t have to live with depression, cancer and immobility would rather die quick in peace.
In a few nations there is a divisive open discussion over the ethical, moral, and legitimate issues of euthanasia. The individuals who are against euthanasia may contend for the holiness of life, while defenders of euthanasia rights accentuate mitigating enduring, substantial respectability, determination toward oneself, and individual autonomy. Jurisdictions where euthanasia or supported suicide is legitimate incorporate the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Estonia, Albania, and the US states of Washington. CLASSIFICATION OF EUTHANASIA Euthanasia may be characterized consistent with if an individual
