Persuasive Essay On Gun Control

Nationally, guns are used in 68% of homicides, which helps explain why America experiences more gun homicides than any other modern nation in the world (Hirsh 86). If America wants to make a real change, then its legislators and constituents must have the will to improve its current gun control laws. By recognizing the lack of any meaningful laws, society can start focusing on the failures of the political system. Currently, there are twenty-two thousand gun control laws in place (Hirsh 86). Due to the large number and minimal impact on America, it appears that these laws are ineffective and in need of a restructuring focused on the gun retailer.

Gun Control Imagine a situation where a family is enjoying a movie at their house and someone breaks in with a gun. The family should not have to worry because they have the right to own a gun. However, if those guns were taken away, the family would have no option except be scared. In many cities where gun control laws have been put into place, crime rates went through the roof. Criminals know that they can get guns, however, the citizens cannot.

A few days ago I posted that I wanted someone to purpose legislation that would stop the shootings, but allow me to keep my AR 15. I took the post down because the conversation went exactly where I didn’t want it to go, but predicted it would. Instead of proposals on legislation, I was having to defend my right to have an AR 15. Gun control advocates are demanding legislation, so I was hoping someone could come up with a proposal within the parameters I described.

Roadmap The issue of gun control has been controversial for years and it is far from being resolved. This paper’s intent is not to pick and choose a side but to explore the different opinions and to look at past court cases and current legislation on gun control to gain a wider perspective on the issue. Some believe that firearm regulation is a safety net and thereby prevents crime from occurring. Others argue that those who are planning to commit a crime are not opposed to finding illegal methods of obtaining firearms while the ordinary citizen will not go to those drastic lengths and therefore are more vulnerable due to the ‘roadblocks’ those regulations can become.

The idea that gun laws will stop rising violence in America is comparable to putting a bandage on an open wound. People are so naive to think a bandaid will stop the bleeding. Sure the bandaid slows it down, but over time the blood will bleed through the bandage. The only way to completely stop the wound from bleeding is to go deep into the wound and stitch it up, often something Americans avoid. On April 16, 2007, Seung-Hui Cho shot and killed 32 people and wounded 17 others at Virginia Tech College in Blacksburg, Virginia. Concealed carry permits are regulated and no firearms or weapons whatsoever are permitted on campus. On December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut, 20 year old Adam Lanza entered Sandy Hook Elementary School and fatally shot 20 children and ultimately took his own life. The most recent mass shooting on a school campus on October 1, 2015 in Umpqua, Oregon which killed nine and wounded nine others, has once again ignited the debate for gun control. Who are these people you ask? These are all the children, between 6 – 7 years old, who were victim of Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. On December 14, a gunman opened fire in Connecticut elementary school killing 26 people, 20 of them children and 6 of them adults. It was the most horrific event that shook the whole country.

“A growing body of evidence from academics, advocacy groups and others supports the link between gun restrictions and a reduction in violence.” (Lichtblau) In fact, a recent study from the Center of American Progress concludes that gun fatalities in states with weaker gun laws are over three times as high as those in states with rougher restrictions. (Lichtblau) These findings were reviewed by an expert in gun violence at John Hopkins University by the name of Daniel Webster.

Gun Control: Effectiveness After the mass shooting in San Bernardino and the one in Umpqua community College, it seems that there is no safe place in the United States. Gun control is a trending topic nowadays. Some believe that passing stricter gun regulations may reduce similar tragedies in the future, others oppose to this. The aim of this paper is to present arguments to prove the ineffectiveness of gun control laws.

Gun Control Gun control over the years has been a controversial subject, with people arguing for both sides. The 2nd amendment states that everyone in the U.S. has a right to bear arms. Mass shootings and suicides by firearm have been a growing concern for many people living in the U.S. Numerous people making the argument that there should be more gun control. Strict regulations and limitations have been pursued already and clearly do not suffice. Statics brought to attention by gun control opponents, show that gun control laws have done little to reduce crime rates. Several restrictions have been made on certain guns, considered as overly dangerous, though in the hands of an unstable criminal even a legal hunting gun can be deadly. Countless restrictions have been made, however people have still found ways around them. If people are unstable and determined enough, they will find a gun, regardless of the restrictions or regulations.

In the previous weeks a travesty occurred. In Florida’s Parkland High school a disturbed individual entered the building and murdered 17 civilians and injured 14 more. This is a tragedy and the families and friends of these victims are mourning. However, with such a travesty as this, it ignites a debate. In the aftermath of such a catastrophe, what should we do.

The incidents that have occurred have been a big impact in people 's lives. Yet no one with power has spoken about the problems regarding the recent shooting. See, there are two main sides of gun control, the side that agrees and the side that doesn’t. People who agree believe that no one should be able to own a gun, or that there should simply be stricter gun control laws.
