I have taken the liberty to communicate my discomfort to you, the members of the department. Recently, I have witnessed an issues expand itself and I, as a concerned citizen, am reaching out to you with the intention of drawing awareness to it. I have resided in Charlotte for over five years and it had never been brought to my attention the fact that the “texting while driving” laws are not enforced as strongly as they should be enforced. I have been driving by myself for less than one year, and needless to say, the amount of times I have almost been hit by a person using a phone while driving are too many to be counted. Although this is a national issue, I ask for a small change starting in Charlotte. As you may or may not have noticed, the issue of texting or utilizing a mobile device while driving has radically growing over the past few years. It was not until I, myself, became a victim of a crash due to a distracted driver that I noticed how much of a danger a person using the phone while behind the wheel can be. For years we have worried about drunk …show more content…
I believe that we can all live in a safer state and feel more comfortable driving if the laws were more strongly enforced. I do not think it is fair that more people have been dying due to crashes caused by a distracted person on the phone. Driving is already a dangerous activity when we all pay attention, and I do understand that some accidents cannot be avoided, however, it is more possible to avoid the crash if one is paying attention. I feel that we should not have to keep giving up loved ones to car crashes caused by a person who thinks it is safe to multitask. People need consequences to their apathetic and careless actions, and that is the reason why I have taken the time to reach out to you. Thank you for your
The general argument made by Matt Richtel in his work, “Driving While Distracted” is that use of cellphones should be banned while in cars. More specifically Ritchel argues that using cellphones in cars can lead to injury, death, and overall danger. He writes “Studies indicate that drivers using cellphones are four times as likely to cause a crash as other drivers” (11). Richtel is suggesting how dangerous the use of these devices can actually be. Cellphone use can magnify the the potential hazards of being in a car to a great extent.
Also on “September 30, the President issued an executive order prohibiting Federal Employees from texting while driving on Government business or with Government equipment.” I feel as though the government should do some more to prevent teens from using cell phones while driving. It’s not just texting but messing with music, talking on the phone, or even talking to Siri can end in some innocent person getting hurt, all because someone wasn 't paying attention to the road for a split
EBSCOhost, doi:10.1016/j.aap.2017.02.016. He, J., et al. " Texting While Driving:
Three of the high risk behaviors account for texting and driving including “eyes off of the road, at least one hand off the wheel, and mind off the driving situation” (Hollister, 2013). The three actions a person partakes in while texting and driving fall into the three major categories the Center for Disease Control established. Once people begin texting and driving, they no longer pay attention to their driving and only their phone or tablet. Distracted driving takes away the reaction time of a driver from avoiding a crash. Comprehending danger while driving takes multiple seconds.
III. Purpose Statement – Texting while driving is a serious distraction and one that could cost you your life or the lives of others. IV. Main Points (TRANSITION:
In the United States there are about 2.5 million car crashes each year. More than half are caused by being distracted by a cell phone (Ameen). Cell phones are the biggest distraction when driving. It is also the most dangerous of all distractions, drivers trying to take their eyes off the road and drive at the same time is very dangerous and almost impossible to do. Most teen drivers admit to using their phone while driving, they know how dangerous it is yet they still chose to do it.
(Dreschel, 2014) b. Texting while driving not only threatens your life, but also everyone else on the road. c. (Statistic) Eleven percent of drivers aged 18 to 20 who were involved in an automobile accident and survived admitted, they were sending or receiving texts when they crashed. (Smith, 2014) d. (Fact) (statistic) Nearly half of US high school students aged ≥16 years old report texting while driving during the past 30 days. (O'Malley, 2013) e. (Fact)
Texting while driving is one of the biggest cause of death among young adults from ages 18-24 (Bergmark, E. Gliklich, Guo, R. Gliklich, 2016). This peril activity is related to motor vehicle collisions and mortality (Bergmark, E. Gliklich, Guo, R. Gliklich, 2016). Therefore, this is a very important preventable health issue that needs to be addressed since it affects young adults that have higher rates of texting while driving than older drivers. Below, I propose an intervention in order to spread awareness and knowledge regarding this very concerning public health issue that continues to persist. Proposed Intervention.
Do people think about picking their phone up while driving? Many people decide to answer and use phones without thinking of the consequences. However, cellphone use while driving shouldn't be allowed due to the danger it brings, the accident it causes, and people who can be killed during the accident. The first reason why it’s dangerous to use your phone while people are driving is 96% of the nation car accidents cell phone were involved in 350 fatal crashes in 2011. But Using the phone while driving is no worse than eating as people are driving or listening to music loud while driving or even messing around with someone in the car.
People think putting a bigger ban on texting and driving is the best option. It is critical to grasp that distracted driving is an issue, but the law is not going to stop it entirely. “There’s no hard evidence so far to tie the dramatic increase in crashes or traffic fatalities to smartphone use” (Knuckle, 2016, p.2.). So viewers should not assume that it is the main cause. While it is true that crashes happen because of cell phone use, people should not tie that back to being the main cause for every crash happening.
Most people believe that they can handle using their phones while driving, but the numbers don’t lie due to high death rates from phone usage in vehicles. Using a phone while driving isn’t as important as someone losing their
Though laws have helped prevent cell phone use while operating a vehicle, cell phones still have only greatened the number of distracted driving accidents. Susan Henneberg is an author who focuses on writing about common issues in society. After hearing of a fatal distracted driving accident, she wrote of the accident, “The impact [of the crash] spun their car sideways into Shaw’s lane, and the trailing pickup truck plowed into the side of the Saturn, killing both men instantly”(Henneberg). Both of these drivers were physically hurt all because of texting and driving.
According to AT&T's Teen Driver Survey, 97% of teens agree that texting while driving is dangerous, yet 43% do it anyway. As young growing adults we learn through the people in our lives, such as our peers and the adults close to us. New research shows that more adults use their phones than teens. Most young minds learn from experiencing situations, rather than hearing about a situation. A fair amount of teens believe that “it could never happen to me”.
In this world texting and driving is a very popular topic. The first iPhone was made June 29th 2007. Ever since the phone was made this was and still is a big concern. When the first car crash happened because of the radio this was a very big sign for people. They have made a law that you can’t text and drive in 2007.
You are driving down the highway and you get a text message, you pick up your cell phone for a quick second to read and reply to the text and then all of a sudden, your car crashes. There are a large number of people that drive with having there phone in their hand. Those people do not understand that whatever is happening on that phone can most likely wait. I can only imagine how many car accidents there are everyday due to drivers taking their eyes off of the road for their cell phone. I agree with the law of making it illegal to drive while using a handheld cell phone because it is dangerous for you and the drivers around you and also you can find a solution so that you will not have to use your cell phone while driving.
