Stop Year-Round School As school districts around the country are rapidly changing to year-round schools instead of the traditional school year, we must stop and reconsider the drawbacks of having school year-round. Year-round school is where the usual 9 months on are still the same, but the 3 months off are distributed throughout the school year instead of in the summer break. School should not be year-round because taking away the summer break and the benefits with it can have many drawbacks, it is a difficult change, and the financial costs are larger for the schools. Summer break means not as much family and social time or extracurricular activities like summer sports or summer camps. the National Education Association says, “Students in year-round school may miss opportunities to spend time with children of other ages while learning about nature, as typical summer camp experiences may no longer be a part of the childhood experience.” Year-round students miss many chances to socialize and do other beneficial activities in the summer. Additionally, let them clearly think about each grade separately and get ready for the next year. The classic saying is, if it isn’t broken, do not fix it. Everyone will have a challenging time switching to year-round school when our traditional schedule is fine. “There is a reason most schools nationwide have operated on a traditional nine-month schedule: it works. Year-round schooling is not a beneficial change for well-developed nine-month schooling systems. It would take years to draft up a reasonable plan for change and successfully implement it.” (Oladiran) Parents who have graduated school may be bewildered as to why we should switch when they graduated school simply fine with the traditional calendar. It will be hard to implement a year-round school when many people do not like it. “According to one study, [year-round schooling] can be so unpopular that families are willing to pay more to live in an area with a traditional calendar, than a lesser-costing area with a year-round calendar,” said the University of Rhode Island. This shows that it is not plausible to switch to year-round schooling because it is not a popular idea. Not only this, but another part about the change to year-round is the cost. There is a noticeably big cost needed to change to year-round
The reason I would like to change to year-round school is because it would let us learn more in a year. If you 're like me, you don’t real do any school work over the summer, and with a year-round schedule, we wouldn’t have a chance to forget anything. If we had year round school, we could have shorter school days or the classes could be longer or shorter. We would have better opportunities to take more classes and learn more. If we were able to learn more,
My school system wants to make year round school possible, and this is an improbable idea. Year round school with longer breaks will help students be less bored, not forget information, and have more free time. When I return from summer break, I can’t even remember what 2 + 2 is! Summer break is too long and school should be year round with longer breaks throughout the year. We all know the terrible feeling of having nothing to do.
Ten percent of public school students attend a year round school according to "Learning Liftoff”. Year round schooling is a controversial topic due to having benefits and doubts. Compared to a traditional school calendar which has a 60 day summer vacation, a year round schedule has a 30 day summer break and more throughout the year. This can lead to many troubles, but can also benefit the students. Though both are in the classroom for 180 days each year.
In an article that informs people on what they need to know about a year-round school called “Year-Round Schools: 10 Things you Should Know,“ The essay says that “…On a multi-track schedule, school maintenance costs rise because the building is in full use year-round,” (Lynch, 2017). While it's true that year-round schooling can require extra funds the quote fails to mention that During the traditional summer break, school buildings sit unused and maintenance is still required to keep them in good condition. By utilizing the building year-round, schools can save on maintenance costs in the long run. Year-round schooling can provide a more consistent learning experience for students, reducing the need for summer school and helping to prevent the learning loss that can occur during extended breaks. Furthermore, teachers can benefit from having a steady income throughout the year.
If those things are taken into consideration year round school could work, but never be
First of all, schools should not convert to year round schooling because it’s hard to find appropriate child care.
Teachers like to go to meetings and clean there rooms so kids come back to a nice clean room. According to text 2, it states, “ When teachers begin a new school year, they usually have the time to attend staff meetings, tidy up their classrooms, and to prepare for incoming students.” So teachers wouldn’t appreciate if it changed to year round school because it wouldn’t give them enough time. All in all teachers would want time to do things.
Year round school would make it difficult for them to see friends, family, or go on vacation.. Many families take the summer as an opportunity to relax and spend time together for three months. Year round school would take over the student's family time. This could cause them to lose touch with family that are far away from
School should not be year round because students do not learn as much, it can be hard for some families, and can be difficult for teachers. In the article TOP 3 REASONS THE US SHOULD SWITCH TO YEAR-ROUND SCHOOLING author Lynch makes a great point by stating, “... when it comes to learning and retention, students who attend year-round schools have nothing to lose and much to gain,” (Lynch, 1). The thing you are gaining is knowledge, which is very important. According to the article Pros and Cons of Year-Round School “... Pros of year-round schooling include: Decreased need to re-teach skills after long vacations, allowing teachers to use classroom time more efficiently,” (Morin, 1). If teachers are using the first few weeks of the school year re-teaching stuff the students forget over the summer, which is going to cut into the time the teacher planned to teach other things.
This is another reason year-round school should not move to Florida. Lastly, a year-round school schedule may offer more breaks, but there is no proof that it helped students academically. Therefore the year-round school schedule does not truly benefit students or teachers. Also the more frequent breaks may pose the problem of students forgetting information after every break, which would cause for more review in class which does not help students learn new things.
