Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation. Teachers should not be armed in schools because the could not handle a real situation, and the liability is too much of a risk. To elaborate, it is widely agreed that a student’s well-being is a teacher’s concern. For six to eight hours every day for 5 days a week, the life of the student is in the teacher’s hands. However, a teacher has never been expected to arm themself to protect a student until now. Times are changing, but “teachers, crucially, are not self-sacrificing martyrs” (Jaffe). Even with extensive training, a teacher cannot and …show more content…
In the event of a shooting, a teacher may accidentally shoot a teacher, a student, or an officer that is trying to help. During class, a teacher may carelessly leave a gun unattended where a student could get a hold of it. Armed teachers are a safety risk as proved by several recent events. A teacher with a gun attempted suicide in a high school in Dalton, and another injured a student after a gun misfired during a gun safety class. Even a principal, who was a school shooting hero for using his own gun to stop a shooter, is in agreement that it is a safety risk. He hesitated to shoot the shooter, claiming he “did not fire out of fear of hitting someone in the background” (Saul). He knew how to handle a gun, but a less experienced armed teacher would have shot anyway, and they would have risked hurting another
3. (Rebuttal): Teachers can also pose a danger to the students if not properly trained, abusive, or insane and out of control. 3. (Response): Special precautions and measures are and can be taken to ensure the individual is safe and responsible to be put into an environment where handling a firearm is extremely dangerous. 4.
It’s as if you were messing with one of your own” (Lestch Corinne). This teacher takes her job very seriously, and when it comes to protecting her students she will do almost anything. In today’s world, we are no longer guaranteed the feeling of safety in our public schools, and if there is anything we can all agree on, is the fact that, we all want safety for our public schools, and it seems apparent that the best possible solution is arming
“Every Teacher in America Should Have a Gun” by Steve Siebold delivers the message about why teachers should be armed with guns. Primarily he thinks that shooters will be less motivated to try to attack a school that is able to defend itself against the gunman. He also goes on to say that “Every second counts in a school shooting. Calling 911 and waiting for police to arrive isn’t good enough.” He gives us the idea that we need to take action against these shooters and potentially end school shootings once and for all.
If students completely trust their teachers, they may be comforted but many students rarely feel that level of comfort with every teacher in the building (Singer). This proves that not all students get along with every teacher there is in their school, there’s many that don’t even talk to their teachers at all. When you have two people shooting at each other, bystanders get caught in the crossfire. This is not a good environment for children (Singer). This means that students could accidently get in the middle of the two people that have a gun and there’s a possibility that the student can get injured.
Over the past few weeks, arming teachers has been a controversial topic throughout the country. School shootings have taken the lives of many over the past few years, yet they are becoming more and more frequent. In today’s society children shouldn’t have to go to school worried if they are going to be safe that day. If teachers are armed it will add that extra bit of protection to the children. A big question is if arming teachers is even going to matter if an active shooter happens to be in that school.
In 2011, 10.3 in every 100,000 people in the U.S. were victims of gun related deaths. If the teacher would have had a gun then he/she could have shot the attacker. Teachers should carry handguns because it provides safety for the students and because it is the teacher’s right. Teachers shouldn’t carry handguns because students would fear them. Ken Corbett a clinical assistant professor reported to Arming teachers: three reasons why teachers should not carry handguns in school that, “ When violent force is upheld as safety, fear and silence creep in.
Teachers should carry guns to decrease school shootings all over the world. Teachers should be taking classes and learning how the gun works and how to use the gun or weapons. Teachers should only have there guns on them in their rooms or in a safe in their rooms. Teachers should also be considering Trump's idea and start having guns in school and all teachers need to have the guns with them or in their rooms.
Greg Toppo made a unique point: “Just as their grandparents feared polio and their parents feared nuclear war, these young people arrive at school each morning fearing death by high-powered rifle.” School shootings have become more and more typical in modern society. One solution that some propose is giving teachers guns in their classroom, and it has become a hot topic in Washington recently. Teachers in the United States should not have guns in the classroom because students could accidentally get ahold of the gun, teachers have to leave their students in order to find the intruder, and there are already many everyday items that teachers need in their classrooms rather than firearms. Teachers in the United States should not have a gun in class because students could accidentally get ahold of the gun.
Not all educators understand the basics of gun safety. Without this proper knowledge, many people can get severely injured or put others in harm. If all teachers wanted to carry a gun, they would go through a lot of classes and it would cost a lot of money. They could become the target of a school shooter and put students at risk for them coming into their classroom. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida, is saying no to arming
Unlike professional shooters, teachers must undergo a series of training in order to obtain a gun. Without the proper protection and training, which was not included in the resolution, would guarantee that the weapons would fall under the wrong hands of the students. Everytown Research states, “Among shootings at K-12 schools in which the age of the shooter was known, 56 percent (39 of 70) were perpetrated by minors.” The resolution states that all teachers would be armed, but, if the teachers were to be armed, the teachers would traumatize the students mentally away from them. Hamby, a research professor in the department of education states, “ ...the links between exposure to weapons violence and negative outcomes of trauma in kids (including depression, anxiety and aggression).
School shootings are extremely uncommon. A recent U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study found that only one percent of childhood homicides, a majority of which involve guns, occur in schools(Russo,1). If teachers do become armed, should there be selected teachers? Some teachers may not want to be armed and have the extra responsibility. Teachers should not be armed while at school.
Since 2012 there have been around 170 school shootings around the US. December 14 was the massacre of 20 children ranging from the age of 7-8. Many of the teachers on campus did not have a weapon with them and
Hypothetically, a law is passed stating that teachers are allowed to carry guns in school. In a sick twisted world, the teacher becomes the school shooter. Your student is in class and their teacher pulls out their government funded school weapon and starts shooting. How is your child supposed to protect themselves if the approved district teacher starts shooting the students with a malicious intent. Teachers should not be allowed to carry guns at school.
The school environment is one that has been stressed to be a safe and enjoyable place to learn. However, for many individuals, that is not the case. Students around the world have very unique experiences at school, which can unfortunately become abhorrent. According to the Center of Disease Control (CDC), and average of 96 Americans lose their lives to gun violence each day (Gun Violence by the Numbers). There are several causes of death by gun violence, but one of the causes that have become a growing problem is school shootings.
Guns have no role in our country schools. Schools and colleges are places of education. Students should be free to learn in an environment away from every day violence. The catastrophes that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Columbine High School, and Virginia Tech. confirm the penetrating conclusion guns have in our nation’s schools. Violence on campus has Students, Parent, and University Staff all concerned and looking for preventative measures.
