Persuasive Speech In America

Some people at Webb City High School would be very angry to find out that they will no longer be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities due to their grades. The students who really want to play sports though would get into gear and get their grades up to prove that they deserve to play. What is a School without education? Pointless. Other people in the community believe that the “C rule” is not fair for the people who do not participate in any extracurricular activities because they will not be being punished.

Freedom of speech is one of the corner stones of American society and is defended vigorously. One huge reason of this defense is the argument where if one small part of freedom of speech is violated or diminished, eventually that will be enough grounds to essentially ban freedom of speech outright. If I’m here on TV in front of millions of american adults, it means I have something really important to tell you. Did you ever say, implicitly or explicitly, that the lyrics of African-American songs are inappropriate, especially those of rappers such as N.W.A? Statistics say that 90 percent of our population have, and most of the time it was explicitly in front of black people. Now, did you ask yourself why is the language of African-Americans inappropriate? Statistics say that 70 percent of the american population doesn’t know the reason and thinks that because we are born black, we should be bad.

The First Amendment states “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech” (Hall, 2014, p. 310). The federal government is not alone in adhering to this clause, but state and local governments also must abide (Hall, 2014). The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that free speech includes many forms such as written or visual and expression or nonverbal speech (Hall, 2014). There are exceptions to free speech if a government can justify an interest that would outweigh individuals’ rights under the First Amendment (Hall, 2014). The fighting words doctrine is an example of a justified exception (Hall, 2014).

Everyone has an opinion, and everyone has the right to voice their opinions. The right to express opinions is a blessing that Americans have fought tirelessly for over the course of many years. However, society is changing and so are our rights. Feelings are being hurt, things are becoming “politically incorrect”, and restrictions are being enforced.

America is pushing the constitution by trying to stop the freedom of speech, by the state governments and the capital. The first amendment (Freedom of speech) says “Freedom of speech is the concept of the inherent human right to voice one's opinion publicly without fear of censorship or punishment.” They are trying to stop us from saying what we want by shutting us up when the police come, we have the right to say what we want to, the police can’t stop it. They don’t want us to say what we want to because they think it will be hurtful to the government, like saying against a law they put out, or protesting to something they do. They are canceling out what we are trying to tell them.

Since, it isn’t justified for America to give us this right of speech, when they knock us down for using it. The Black Lives Matter Movement is proof of this, they protest over and over but the government doesn’t want to take responsibility or change for the better of the community. As a community we need to see actions taking place, not only just words. I think they are right for opposing the dominant culture, since it is going to take a lot of work for America to socially change, and we have stick up for what we believe in or them would never been any change in America. America has become a better nation with time, protests and the power of a counter culture always existing to fight for equality, no matter the gender and race.

In today's society we see censorship many times like when “ a biopsychology student maintained that the university’s speech code prevented him from freely discussing controversial ideas about biologically based differences between the sexes and races” the district court “ ruled that the university’s code prescribed too great a range of speech and, therefore, was an unconstitutional infringement on the plaintiff’s First Amendment rights.” (Censorship). Censorship is taking away our freedom of speech. A student was trying to give a controversial speech however the district thought it provided too much articulation. Nevertheless, schools teach that having a wide range of vocabulary is good and they encourage it, so why are they trying to take that back now?

In my opinion, Freedom of speech should be limited, because it is not acceptable that everybody say whatever he/she wants. As human beings, we are all born with an entitlement of freedom of speech or synonymously known as freedom of expression as it is a basic human right. It is stated in the Federal Constitution and it is important for us human beings to protect our rights to freedom of speech and expression as it is the backbone for a democratic society. Having the right to express oneself freely without any restrictions is an essential part of what it means to be a free human being. 1.5 Regulation in Free Speech Principle The commitment to the principle of freedom of expression is of great significance to the society and so it has become necessary to spell out as clearly as possible the nitty-gritty of this commitment.
