While voting for a leader, Ralph is singled out and chosen due to the presence of the conch. The conch is a symbol of power—as well as a representation of law and democracy. When Ralph is found blowing the conch by the other boys, he is seen as the most capable and right leader.

Simon's tendencies to go off alone make the other boys think he's a tad odd, but, for the reader, Simon's credibility as a visionary is established when he prophesies to Ralph "You'll get back to where you came from." Simon reaches an understanding of mankind's innate evil nature and unthinking urge to dominate as "mankind's essential illness." When Simon tries to visualize what the beast might look like, "there arose before his inward sight the picture of a human at once heroic and sick" — Golding's vision of humanity as flawed by inherent depravity. Golding gives this knowledge to an outsider like Simon to reflect the place visionaries and mystics/yogis typically hold in society: on the fringes, little understood by the majority, and often feared or disregarded. Like other mystics, Simon asks questions the other boys cannot answer.

What would life be without evil in the world? Many optimists believe there is an inherent goodness gifted to all people at birth and fundamentally embedded in us that dictates our actions, but the reality is exactly the contrary. People are evil, not because of a desire or choice but out of absolute necessity on account of none of the things we enjoy today would be available or even invented without some evil. Evil, within limitations and with restrictions, is productive for a group of people. Society, with all its art, culture, music, and glory, was created because there was evil present and now works to destroy its very creator through police departments and social initiatives.

Before this experience, the majority of boys had already expressed their fear the unidentified beast roaming the island, so meeting what they thought to be the beast face-to-face only increased that fear. In the beginning of the story a group of school boys from England are in a plane that crashes onto an island, but they all fell in different areas of the island.

(95) The significance of this quote is that a warning sign was sent to the island (plane, helicopter, or some flying vehicle) but none of the boys were awake so the “grownups” were unaware about their whereabouts. The fire had died down and so did the smoke (at this current point) for the grownups to see if anyone was stranded on the island.

The older boys emitiatly belive its his imagination but even later in the novel the boys start to question the exsitance of the beast. After the killing of simion, jack is belives ut was simon disguised as the beast, and that the beast is not dead.

The last significant symbol from the book was Piggy’s glasses. Used throughout the book to both help Piggy see and to light the fire, Piggy’s glasses played a very important role. During the course of Lord of the Flies, it was evident that Piggy was the most rational boy on the island, even though he was often ridiculed by his peers. Piggy saw clearly when others lost sight of themselves. The real downfall of the story began when Piggy’s glasses were stolen from him, when Jack Merridew and his tribe of savages attacked him.

This made the boys think that he was the beast. The dead man being in the dark, made the boys scared because they couldn’t see him. This is an example of the dark representing fear.

The Lord Of The Flies by William Golding is a book about a plane full of boys crashing on an island. The boys are by themselves no adults so they have to survive on their own and establish their own government. Piggy is one of the first characters we meet as a boy with poor eyesight, a weight problem and asthma so the readers already like him even if no one else likes him. Piggy is the closest thing the boys have to an adult on the island. Throughout the story Piggy embraces the character traits of being intellectually intelligent, Mature and loyal.

Lastly, the Lord of the Flies symbolizes the Inherent Evil of Man through demonstrating that a boy understood that the evil is within them instead of around them, and is not something that could be killed

The collective fear of the unknown leads to the untimely and accidental death of Simon. The distress present in the boys causes their impulsive action, of Simon’s horrific murder. Fear of “the beast” an imaginary creature causes the boys to act irrational, and provokes survival instincts as a result of life threatening terror. The fear of the boys in this moment is epitomized when they chant, “Kill the beast!, Cut his throat, Spill his blood!” (168).

(Golding, 77). Although the boys laugh at Simon’s idea, his belief conforms Golding’s idea that inner evil exists. The boys develop into the beast when they kill Simon. Simon was desperate to explain the unidentified creature on the mountain but the boys weren’t in the mood for listening to him. With his brutal murder by the other boys, chaos takes over civilized order on the island.
