Polyneikes In Antigone

In the play, Antigone by Sophocles, Antigone argues that her older brother should be given the respect of a proper burial to be able to pass through Purgatory. Antigone supports her argument by using Pathos and Ethos to persuade the king Creon to go back on the law of anyone attempting to Polyneices a burial they will be punished. Antigone’s purpose is to give her brother the burial that will allow him to pass onto the afterlife she believes in. Antigone uses an argumentative tone for the proper burial of her brother. In seeking a proper burial for her brother, Polyneices, Antigone’s standards of divine justice provide a more effective argument than that of the king

In the story of Antigone, Eteocles and Polyneices are both fighting to be the king of Thebes. They both die in the fight but Eteocles is buried while Polyneices is left to the vultures. Antigone is both Polyneices and Eteocles’ sister, With both brothers dead the throne was given to their uncle Creon, who believes Polyneices is a traitor and should not have a burial. Antigone strongly disagrees with Creon, thus sneaking out and giving him a proper burial. This action was considered punishable by death.

This doing was by Creon her uncle who crowned himself king, which is part of his downfall. Antigone believes it’s her duty to bury Polyneices because she is his sister, but Creon believes Polyneices is the enemy. In Antigone the play, Creon says “He’ll be left unburied, his body there for birds and dogs to eat, a clear reminder of his shameful fate. ”(lines 234-236) and also Antigone says “No, no.

Polynices and Eteocles fought for control of the kingdom and died by each other's hand in war. On their travels, Antigone's father had died and she returned to find her brothers dead. Her uncle, Creon, had taken the throne and because he favored Eteocles gave him a proper burial while leaving Polynices' body out to rot. She respected her brother and she went out to bury her brother. She was caught and sentenced to death.

" It has come to our notice that the war between Polyneices and Eteocles has angered the people of Thebes and has led Antigone to go against her uncle Creon the King. The new law states that Polyneices is to not have a burial, that no man is to touch him or say the least prayer for him." As soon as the law was established Antigone was infuriated. Antigone decided to tell Ismene her plan, she was not going to be stopped even if she died in the process of honoring her brother. Ismene was starting to think that her sister was going mad and wished to not be a part of her actions.

In Sophocles' Antigone, the foremost source of conflict between Antigone and Kreon is the burial of Antigone's dead brothers who liquidate each other in battle after one disagreed to hand over the throne. After hearing the tragic news, Antigone conveys to her sister Ismene: Kreon buried our brother Eteocles with military honors, gave him a soldier's funeral, and it was right that he should; but Polyneices, who fought as bravely and died as miserably, — they say that Kreon has sworn no one shall bury him, no one mourn for him. (1. 15-20) Antigone decides that she will bury Polyneicies herself even though it is illegal. She is loyal to her family, does not want to disgrace the laws of the gods, and also believes that it is her hereditary duty to bury her brother Polynecies regardless of whatever crime he has committed.

The first thing Antigone did to rise against all odds by disobeying the King Creon her uncle by burying her brother. “ has not Ceron to the tomb preferred One of our brothers ,..’’ (Antigone 2). She did that because in that time the Greeks believed that it was a right by the gods to be buried by one of your loved ones. She would do that in tho the

Creon knows that she cannot do it because he is king and everyone will listen to the ruler of his or her town. But Antigone goes against this and buries her brother anyway. Antigone also goes against the government’s laws, which are run by a male. She tells Creon the reason she buried her brother was because he loves him and that they are family. “It’s not for him to keep me from my own” (Antigone 48).

Even though Antigone’s brother committed a crime, he should still be buried like any other family member that committed a crime. The first thing Creon’s does in Antigone is declare a hash but understandable law. Anyone who attempts to honor Polyneices will be sentenced

Antigone is the daughter of the late king Oedipus, and Creon is the king of Corinth. The conflict that these two face is the burial of Polyneices, who was Antigone’s deceased brother. Creon was not allowing Polynices to be buried, because he had fought against Athens. To Creon, this was correct: “And yet you dared to overstep these laws?” (Sophocles Line 458)

In the decree, Creon declares that Eteocles body should be buried with honor and fame for his courage of saving the city from the enemy. Whiles Polynices body is left unburied and rotting for beasts to feed on because he came to destroy the city and enslave the people. Antigone had two brothers who were killed. One of her brothers, Polynices, was ordered by Creon to not be buried and anyone who attempted to bury him would be sentenced to death. Knowing this, Antigone still risks her life and buries her brother. In ancient greek times the burial of someone was considered very sacred, so as one may guess this caused a great problem.

When people defend what they believe in or who they love that is sacrifice. In order to be certain that her two brothers she loved had a proper burial and that their souls could rest, Antigone sacrificed her life. Regardless of the potential outcome; even if that means that she was going to have to challenge her uncle (King Creon), she plans on pursuing her quest. Polynices and Eteocles killed each other in battle for control over Thebes, leaving the city to the new King, Creon Jocasta’s brother and Antigone’s uncle. Because of the actions that Polynices took during the war, Creon labels him a traitor and halts any burial process, leaving his body for the animals (222-234).

In the story, Antigone, Creon, the king, established two decrees in the land of Thebes. The first decree is nobody should bury Polyneices and the second, Antigone and her sister, Ismene, be put to death. Antigone, Polyneices sister, performed an act of civil disobedience by burying her brother with full knowledge she would die. Although Ismene didn’t commit the crime, she still wanted to be punished. Ismene said, “But now I know what you meant; and I am here to join you to take my share.”

In Antigone, there was two brothers who shared being the King and one of the brothers, Polynices, wanted to start a war with the kingdom because he wanted to be the main ruler. Polynices and his brother Eteocles fight and they both end up killing each other. Their Uncle Creon, who takes position as King when they are both killed, decides that only Eteocles will have a proper burial and Polynices will be left to rot. Antigone, Polynices and Eteocles sister, thinks that Creon’s decision is unfair and takes upon herself to give Polynices a proper burial. When their other sister Ismene finds out, she is stuck between helping her sister bury their brother and following Creon’s demands.
