There are many concepts that underpin discrimination and many theories to draw from this paper will detail and explore the definitions, concepts, and theories such as Stereotyping, Social Identity Theory, and Conflict Theory which are all to the fore in prejudice and discrimination. It will seek to examine current research and suggest strategies based on best practice and evidence to combat discrimination and prejudice within organisations to allow for a healthy productive workforce.

Allport theorised that there were five methods in which discrimination can occur (Allport, Clark, & Pettigrew, 1979b). These include verbal discrimination, avoidance, and denial of service or withholding service, physical assault, and extermination. Gordon Allport’s, the nature of prejudice, defined the field of intergroup associations for social psychologists as the study of prejudice and its effects on group interactions. Essential Question: How are prejudice and bias created? How are they overcome? Merriam Webster defines prejudice as an unfair feeling of dislike for a person or group because of race, sex, or religion. Bias, bias is defined as a tendency to believe that some people, ideas, etc., are better than others that usually results in treating some people unfairly.
Discrimination refers to unjustifiable behaviour towards a group of people, whether it be due to their age, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or ethnical orientation. Correll et al (2010) defines discrimination as ‘behaviour directed towards category members that is consequential for their outcomes and that is directed towards them, not because of any particular deservingness or reciprocity but simply because they happen to be members of that category. ’ Everyone has a right to equality before the law and to be protected from discrimination. Despite this, people all around the world are discriminated against every day. Such discrimination has even resulted in policies of ethnical cleansing and genocide.
Prejudice Have you ever gotten looked down on because you’re not the same color as the person standing next to you? Or have you never been treated equally because they don't respect your religion? Being prejudice does not make you a big man or cool or popular it's a very bad thing if you are prejudice because you think you're above that person just because of the way they look or what religion they are. Prejudice: Sneetches, Books, and Neurology Websters defines prejudice as “a preconceived judgement or opinion.” Prejudice is taking something, someone, or somewhere and judging from an opinion or the actions of one. A good example is the classic Dr. Seuss book, The Sneetches. The star bellied Sneetches are prejudiced against the bare bellied Sneetches for their lack of a star.
Discrimination is the treatment of a person or particular group of people differently, in a way that is worse than the way people are usually treated. The United States, ever since it was founded, has been plagued with discrimination. In the U.S. racism and sexism seem to be the most prevalent discriminatory problems. However, these two types of discrimination have been greatly reduced, and could be almost non-existent, but people are still benefiting from being “unequal” so the problem sticks around. Protests and other types of unrest have brought the problem to the media’s attention and many people have observed that the problems are being fought with a tougher form of themselves.
Disparities and Discrimination in US Criminal Justice System The US justice system is marred with instances of high degree discrimination and disparities and these stems from unprecedented poor management of the civil law in the country. The world is full of many evils, including hate, war, discrimination, poverty etc, and though it is nowhere near as bad as it once was years ago it is still an issue for society today. The idea that an entire group of individuals who share similar characteristics are all the same is known as a stereotype (Kassin, Fein, Markus, Burke, 2013). There are several different stereotypes ranging from gender to race, age, social class, ethnicity, etc. Unfortunately far too often members of different social groups experience discrimination by people who are prejudice towards them because of their social group. The three psychological theories which are used to explain the causes of prejudice and discrimination will be evaluated and outlined in this essay. Prejudice is a negative feeling directed at members of a group just because they are part of the group. Discrimination can be seen as the behavioural expression of prejudice i.e. the behaviour or negative actions, directed at members of other group, mainly based on their sex, ethnicity, age or social class. The mass murder of Jews by the Nazi’s in the Second World War is an example of prejudice and discrimination. Prejudice comprises of affection, behaviour and cognition of an individual, whereas discrimination only involves the behaviour.
