Pros And Cons Of Abigail Williams

Did you know that during the Salem witch trials, over 200 people got accused of witchcraft? The Crucible takes place in Salem, MA during the trials. With all the panic around witchcraft, many people were accused of it, causing hysteria. But, there is usually one person to blame for contributing most to the hysteria. In Act 1 of The Crucible, Abigail is the most responsible for creating mass hysteria because she was found dancing in the forest, accused others of dancing with the devil, and had an affair with Proctor.

Can one girl make an entire town go crazy about witchcraft? Based on the facts found in the book “The Crusible”, most would say that many could be held responsible for the mass witchcraft hysteria. However, I strongly believe that Abigail Williams is the most responsible for the salem witch trials. Not only does she lie to the court and town’s people she also manipulates a few girls to go along with her plan. At first, Abigail lies to the court and town’s people about Tituba and Goody Proctor, resulting in them to go to jail and many deaths in the town.

Dark and sinister forces were going around Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Over twenty innocent people were found guilty of witchcraft and were sentenced to death. These sinister acts at the time were thought to be happening by witches, but the truth of the matter is that it was actually being caused by a girl named Abigail Williams, who was seeking her vengeance on the townspeople. The girl named Abigail Williams was a teenager who had been seen dancing in the forest with her friend Betty Parris. This was considered a crime back in the 1600’s and the punishment was whippings.

A group of girls control the whole village of Salem with their lies. In the story The Crucible, by Author Miller, many people begin losing their lives due to girls that crave to save their own. A seventeen year old girl by the name of Abigail Williams is the lead of all crazy witchcraft hysteria in Salem. Abigail Williams is the main cause for all witchcraft hysteria because of her threatening leadership and because of her revengeful accusations. First of all Abigail lead the whole group of girls into lying about what really happened in the forest the night before the hysteria started.

The person most responsible for the mass hysteria of witchcraft in salem has to be Abigail Williams. The witch trials wouldn't have gone the way they did if it wasn't for this woman. Abigail lies, manipulates, the whole town with her sly tactics to divert attention from herself because she could be hanged for what she did. She does everything in her power to make sure she does not get hanged by any means necessary. For example, Abigail blamed Tituba for the witchcraft to evade punishment, she chose Tituba because she was a black slave and no one would believe a black slave.

Abigail Williams and the girls is responsible for the deaths of the people who were wrongly convicted and hanged. Also Danforth has some of the blame for this situation as well. However, the girls are the ones who started this situation because the book explains, “Mr. Parris said, “That my daughter and my niece I discovered dancing like heathen in the forest,” (6). In Salem, the rules are to not go through the woods and dances. Now people think that they are doing witchcraft.

During the late 17th century a total of 200 people were accused of participating in witchcraft, while 19 people lost their lives to the mass hysteria. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, a group of girls start a huge uproar in Salem, Massachusetts when they start screeching about Salemites being associated with the Devil. Throughout the play write, it shows the consequences of mass hysteria and how it puts people's lives in danger. Abigail Williams causes a wave of mass hysteria and because of her trickery, innocent people have died by her and the other girl’s actions, for this Abigail is the most unforgivable character in The Crucible.

Would you believe that a 12 year old girl would indirectly cause the deaths of 20 people? Abigail Williams a young girl who lived in salem she has been labeled as the first accuser in the Salem witch trials. Abigail is an pure evil. She has so much hatred to Elizabeth proctor she actually tries to perform witchcraft in attempt to kill her. Even when things spiral out of control and people start being killed she refuses to fess up in attempt to save people.

Abigail Williams was historically quite different from how she was depicted in The Crucible and yet her character remained faithful to the original. The real Abigail Williams was only a child of eleven years old at the time of the Salem Witch Trials, not a teenage girl seeking revenge in order to be with the man that she loves (“About Abigail Williams”). Williams was likely an orphan as she lived with her uncle. Not much is known about her parents or how she came to live with Reverend Parris (“The “Afflicted””). Her lack of a stable two parent home may have contributed to her psychological need for attention and her role as the foremost of the “targeted” and “harassed” accusing girls.

In the play, the Crucible, by Arthur Miller, Salem, Massachusetts was a place of constant hysteria in the 1600s because of what would come to be commonly known as the Salem Witch Trials. This was a full-blown witch hunt for people found to display signs of witchcraft. Abigail Williams was the main person to blame for this pursuit of witches in Salem because, first off, she was the one who caused hysteria about witchcraft just to cover up the fact that

In a small village called Salem, witchcraft and sorcery exist, however everyone is pointing fingers but not a single soul knows who is actually to blame for this nonsense. During this time period of hysteria, there are multiple scenes that are very questionable due to one person and one person only. Abigail is the one most responsible for the hysteria and witchcraft in Salem. She threatens the group of girls that accompanied her in the woods while they all danced. She has also lied about many things on multiple occasions in which causes an extreme amount of suspicion.

Fear that spread among a group of people in Salem during the Salem Witch Trials, that event in history is a prime example of Mass Hysteria. In Salem the reason why so many women were killed was because of Mass Hysteria. It caused many people, in Salem during this event to think fast, rash and jump to conclusions. “The Crucible”, a short play dedicated to these events in Salem shows us how hysteria was such a leading cause of why the Witch Trials had even occurred. In Salem, Massachusetts a series of hearings and prosecutions started, commonly known as the Salem Witchcraft Trials. The witchcraft trials in Salem became a big concern after two-hundred innocent people were accused and twenty people were executed. Many people of Salem believed the court was just in accusing all these victims. A seldom amount of people went against the court in saying that the court was a fraud and that the decisions were biased being made. Abigail Williams held all the power in the court and determined who was “guilty” or not.

During the Salem Witch Trials a lot of people were accused of using witchcraft. As a result many people died for other people’s lies, rumors, and selfishness. There is one person that really caused and is most to blame for all the chaos, her name is Abigail. Abigail is to blame for all that has happened in the Witch Trials, the reason for that is because of all the accusing and lying she has done. In addition, it all leads up to her for instance, she used a doll to accuse people of witchcraft.

The crucible I think The Crucible’s theme is witchcraft. The main problem in town was witches or someone having a spell on somebody else. One example on why i say the theme is witchcraft is because Mrs.Putnam blamed witches for all of her kids dying. Another example was that Abigail & the girls were acting strange throughout the whole play & were acting like they were never involved with witchcraft. Finally another reason was that people were blaming innocent people for witchcraft.
