The South after the Civil War suffered the most. Since the war had been fought almost entirely on Southern soil, the North did not have to face the task of rebuilding. The South sustained immense damage, entire cities laid in ruins, and thousands of people lacked the ability to provide food and shelter for themselves. The Reconstruction was necessary because it helped the South become part of the union again. The Reconstruction proved to have many successes. Through President Lincoln’s efforts the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were all ratified. The nearly 200 years of racism in the South had almost been completely eradicated, and many African Americans participated in organizations and jobs in the South. The confederacy had been destroyed for good and every state that had seceded was readmitted to the Union. The war made for a disaster, but in the end made the U.S. one nation together. …show more content…
Despite many achievements, the Reconstruction faced many challenges because of white resistance. Many Southern whites were uncooperative with new legislation passed by blacks and Yankees. With the resistance came vigilante groups like the Ku Klux Klan. The KKK formed to maintain white supremacy and to intimidate black voters and whites that supported them. The vigilante groups tried to follow old ways as much as possible, so much so that they hired blacks to work the agricultural fields whites owned. Once former confederates had their right to vote brought back, they tried hard to win public office and if they did they would try and undo most of the social and economic reforms. Their efforts were in attempt to undo Reconstruction and restore the “Old South”. Some efforts under the Democratic Leadership were successful, and government spending was cut and many Reconstruction programs were hurt or
The Reconstruction plan changed politics drastically in the South. Republican governments gained power in each southern state. The southern states believed that they fell under the (http://www.westga.edu/~hgoodson/Reconstruction.htm) reconstruction just as long as the Republican government held power in there state. There were multiple of opinions on how the Reconstruction should be achieved.
After the Civil War conditions were really bad because a lot of homes and personal properties were destroyed. Because of the War the Union lost 370,000 troop members and the Confederacy lost 260,000. Total 375,000 troop members were injured. Many civilians in the South died because of access to food was infrequent. I believe Reconstruction was necessary because after four long years of war they should move on from it and reunite as one.
Indeed, the need for reconstruction was more than welcome. Recontruction, 1865-1877 President Abraham Lincoln had a flexible and realistic approach towards reconstruction. He insisted that slaves had to be emancipated, and this could only be possible after defeating the Southerners. In this regard, he appointed military governors like Andrew Johnson, whose success in the reconstitution of Tennessee proved worthwhile, leading to his recommendation as vice president on the Republican ticket under Lincoln in 1864 (Klotter et al., 2005). Following the assassination of President Lincoln, with Andrew Johnson assuming power, it was believed that he would be able to work well with the Congress, in order to effectively administer the reconstruction process.
The results of the Civil War helped America become a nation. It gave the government power over the individual states. The Union won the Civil War, this was not surprising to most because they had more advantages than the Confederate did. They had a larger army. The North manufactured more than ninety percent of all good in America, its factories turned against the South during the war.
The Civil War in 1865 and Reconstruction in 1865-1877 is the reason for peace and good relations with other states. In other words, it typically brought America together, and that is key for a good nation. The effects the Civil War had on the U.S becoming a nation was significantly dramatic. This includes when the two regions that were having slavery at the time, causing a bad perspective on the U.S., the Civil War had put an end to that slavery. Over 3 million of slaves have finally gotten their freedom.
The South killed Reconstruction due to the KKK, which was very terrifying and racist.which people couldn't take any more, and Lawlessness and Fear, which led to craziness. There were things that occurred after the Civil War. The first Easter egg hunt on the White House lawn was an event that happened after the Civil War. Another interesting fact was that the first college football game between Princeton and Rutgers happened, also the last federal troops leave the South. The South killed Reconstruction because of the KKK, Racism, and Lawlessness and Fear.
Not only did more people join the Union, but good fighters that surprised everyone and a few rose to the top. They all fought until the very end, until their last breath, up the hills and put american flags on it, without the help of African American soldiers not only those fighting but also the spies and nurses, the result of the war could’ve ended much more disastrously. All throughout the war, they became true examples of soldiers, bravery, willingness to fight and the refusion to
In 1865 The Civil War, a war which lasted four years, completely destroyed the South, and freed about 4 million slaves had finally ended. The period of Reconstruction was when the South rebuilt what had been destroyed and the South and North joined back together. The Nation also had to solve many problems including how the recently freed slaves would fit into society. Reconstruction was a failure for the Freedmen because Freedmen got to peruse their rights and not live in fear for minimal time, until President Grant did not run again for president and Rutherford Hayes became president leading to the former groups who terrorized the Freedmen to reorganize. In addition, a start to segregation began due to troops being removed from the South
Reconstruction was from 1865 to 1877. During this time period there were many changes made to the Union. Some of them being the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, the Civil Rights Act, Black Codes, and many more. The Ku Klux Klan was also started during reconstruction.
Civil War Leading up to and during the civil war both the North and the South ran into many troubles along the way leading to the climax of the combat. The North going into the war had a more widespread army that almost tripled at times the amount of soldiers claimed by the south and more support coming from many different sources. However, military leadership was not very adequate towards the onset and, the amount of desertions from the north almost doubled that of the south. The south on the other hand had quite capable leadership from beginning till end having more of passion going in to the conflict but, many variables that the south predicted to go about didn’t quite come to fruition thus, ultimately causing the souths hierarchy to crumble. Coming into the civil war the
The most powerful people in the south, the KKK were the only ones that could have helped with the reconstruction of the south were not helping matters, that is why there was not and big developments. The south only wanted white people in power because they thought that the freedman were not equal and unfit to be part of any governments. The south wouldn’t even allow the freedmen to attend and public events. In conclusion even though the North had taken the soldiers out of the south and had given up on the freemen, the south has had a lot more problems reconstructing and making the freedman equal.
1876 was an important year for America. It was the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and America was moving forward. The united states was creating enough opportunity that all Americans and millions of immigrants could purse their hopes and dreams for happiness, just as Thomas Jefferson predicted 100 years earlier. But the great irony 1876 crushed the American dreams of millions of African-American and immigrants. Granting Hayes in office, he removed the last federal soldiers from the south, guaranteeing that all-white government will rise to power in the south.
The American civil war led to the reunion of the South and the North. But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).
Resistance means to oppose an offer or an offering. Southern resistance killed Reconstruction socially, economically, and politically. The South killed Reconstruction socially in the South by allowing a group called the KKK to take control and harm citizens. The Klu Klux Klan (KKK) was a group of white southerner men who publicly tortured or brutally harmed blacks and republicans for several reasons.
The reconstruction period was a failure because African Americans, mainly males, were not treated with equality although the constitution said that the they were free and had the right to vote, be educated and had the right to liberty, life and the pursuit to happiness. Organizations, like the KKK, were created to harm freed slaves and their families. Laws were created such as the Black Codes restricting former slaves from their rights. African Americans endured a lot of violence over the years. “In Grayson, Texas, a white man and two friends murdered three former slaves because the wanted to ‘ thin the niggers out and drive them to their hole’”.
