The Civil War did not bring freedom to the Blacks in the USA What is freedom? I believe that freedom is the right to express yourself freely and have freewill – receiving no bias or prejudice to your actions. The ability to have equal opportunity to play an active role in society. Slaves were brought to the USA in large ships which held a large number of black people – it was the Atlantic Slave Trade. In this trade, blacks were shipped to the USA in return for money and exotic goods. These slaves were kept in captivity and worked for their owners until they died, but were given the necessities to live, such as food, water, and shelter. Slavery was then practiced until 1863 when the Emancipation Proclamation was announced, and slaves were freed. Prior to this, the Civil War was primarily about the contrasting view of the north and south about slavery. The war was fought to preserve the Union and to establish Southern independence as a new confederation of …show more content…
The 14th Amendment (1868) guaranteed African Americans citizenship rights and promised that the federal government would enforce "equal protection of the laws." Moreover, the 15th Amendment (1870) stated that no one could be denied the right to vote based on "race, colour or previous condition of servitude." These amendments were created during the reconstruction era. Although these amendments were enacted, by the Congress, it does not mean that they were accepted by society. By 1872, 1,510 African Americans held office in the southern states. Eight black men served together in the U.S. Congress in 1875. It was clear that the blacks were making progress, progress but it took just under a century to gain equality – even still having to deal with racism. I took until 1964, where is prohibited to discriminate based on race, colour, religion, sex or national origin. This is a substantially long time to gain equality and truly be
The civil war redefined what it meant to be an American because the nation was divided. The civil war redefined to be an American because it changed laws and american’s were also divided over slavery. Nobody ever helped Sojourner Truth get into carriages, over mud puddles or even gives her any best place. Frederick Douglass told others that they would be free when you are twenty-one during the civil war, but he said that he is a slave for life. Paul Revere quotes said On a shadowy something far away, where the river widens to meet the bay,a line of black, that bends and floats on the rising tide, like a bridge of boats so it basically has something to do with the civil war or the fact that he feels bad for the people who are slaves and need help.
Until the Emancipation proclamation was pronounced Lincoln’s only real goal for the war was to restore the Union. It wasn’t until mid-1862 that Lincoln believed the cause for the war should be widened to ending slavery as well. Without causing trouble to the four loyal slave states, Lincoln declared that all slaves were free as of January 1, 1863. This however wasn’t the case because most slaves were still under the control of the Confederacy. This gave hope to African American slaves everywhere.
Before the Civil War, the States had argued over numerous things. Many of these issues were settled through compromises that appeased each State’s arguments. However, America had slowly split into the Northern and Southern states due to their increasing amount of disagreements. This had eventually become a big issue and Americans could no longer turn to compromise in order to restore peace. Over time, the South decided to secede from the North, primarily due to sectional differences, their views on slavery, and the election of 1860.
The Civil War was a battle between the north and south that neither side had anticipated would be so long and difficult. This long lasting war involved several battles that led to thousands of casualties on both sides. A total of more than six hundred twenty thousand American men perished. The objective of the Civil War was to abolish slavery from the north’s perspective, or to keep the southern lifestyle as the southerners justification to fight. The winning side of this war would change the history of slaves, and whether or not it still exists to this day.
According to the website 'www.loc.gov ', in paragraph 4, it says that "African American slaves had no such control and they worked under constant supervision and the threat of physical punishment by their overseers. " This explains why the Civil War happened, and before that, it was very racial back in the 17th century. I think that the whites thought that the African Americans were different than them and decided to take advantage. Another sentence in paragraph 4 says "Indeed, no matter how kindly a slave owner might have been, the slaves did not possess that which Americans most prized, their freedom."
many people at this time we're still extremely racist the slaves are free but that didn't change how people thought about them. African American soldiers what are usually used for labor work and not many of them were sent off to go fight in the war except for the 54th Massachusetts Regiment and a few other African American soldiers. The 54th Massachusetts help the Union throughout the Civil War they were known for being the first of all and tear to go assault Fort Wagner South Carolina. although assault ultimately failed. History.com States the black Soldiers made up 10% of the Union thus given the Union a bigger advantage at winning the Civil War since the union already had more troops than the South.
Intro: The United States ingrained slavery as part of its society since the country first started, and has been a recurring controversial issue throughout American history. In the Declaration of Independence, no one addressed the issue of slavery, fearing opposition and disunity from the South. The founding fathers who wrote the Constitution largely avoided the issue of slavery too (exception of 3/5th compromise). Despite the fact that weak political leadership, state v. federal rights, different economic systems, and westward expansion toward the Pacific created tensions within the country, it is the prevalent and underlying issue of slavery that caused the Civil War. The tensions caused by slavery echo across American history and is the major
The two out four questions that I choose are to 1.) Discuss the causes of the civil war. Cite as many facts as possible to back up your analysis. And answer 2.) If the enduring vision of America is embodied in the Declaration of Independence's statements about equality and universal rights to justice, liberty, and self-fulfillment, how much progress toward those ideals had blacks and women made by 1877?
Second came the 14th amendment that was ratified on July 9, 1868 and granted citizenship to all people born or naturalized in the United States. The goal of this amendment was to increase the amount of people that had access to the protections of civil rights to all those classified under the law as American (“Primary Documents in American History." 14th Amendment…). Finally there was the 15th amendment which was ratified on February 3, 1870 and granted African-American men the right to vote. (“Primary Documents in American History."
Slavery was a very cruel injustice from 1776 until 1865 when some courageous men and women decided to help end it. African Americans were discriminated against and treated differently just because of their appearance. “President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free." (Archives.gov).
The 15th Amendment (Amendment XV), which gave African-American men the right to vote, was inserted into the U.S. Constitution on March 30, 1870. Passed by Congress the year before, the amendment says, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” Although the amendment was passed in the late 1870s, many racist practices were used to oppose African-Americans from voting, especially in the Southern States like Georgia and Alabama. After many years of racism, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 aimed to overthrow legal barricades at the state and local levels that deny African-Americans their right to vote. In the
Post Civil War, African Americans started to gain rights to gain rights, and soon gain rights equal to whites. While there were some people/things standing in their way (KKK, Black Codes), in the end they got what they needed; Equality. Many acts and laws were passed to aid the new rights now held by African Americans, as well as the numerous people willing to help. New Amendments were added to give African Americans rights after the war, all giving them some equal rights to whites. The first of the three added was the Thirteenth Amendment, it gave African Americans freedom from slave owners, and stated that no one could be kept as a slave in the U.S..
“This was not merely an economic blow; it was a challenge to and rejection of their most basic views, values, and identities.” (#158). Slavery was around in the United States for over 2 centuries before the Civil War and many Southerners deeply depended on it for they knew of no life without it. Once Abraham Lincoln was elected into office in 1860, masters viewed him as treasonous and perceived the slaves who began to show resistance to their demands as
The Civil War was fought during 1861 through 1865 between the Southern and Northern parts of the United States. The North, or the Union, wanted to abolish slavery, but the South, called the Confederates, wanted to keep slavery as well as secede from the Union. This war started at Fort Sumter and was won by the North. Hostility between the North and South grew noticeably after the year of the Missouri Compromise, 1820 (“Civil War” 1). In 1852, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a book about slave life, became the second best-selling book in 19th Century America, behind the Bible, and opened the eyes of Northerners.
