Massey and Denton’s book, American Apartheid: Segregation and the Making of the Underclass, hits strong on this topic of “residential segregation”. Massey and Denton, both went hand and hand with what Jackson was saying. This is a well organized, well-written and greatly researched book.

In Merriam Webster Online Dictionary, the word segregation means a “cause or force the separation of (as from the rest of society).” American society has for decades segregated African-Americans from their White counterparts. Even today, with equal rights for all, many people of color feel segregated in their daily lives. However, today’s segregation does not compare to the 1930’s America.

Segregation has been a huge issue in our society since the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. The battle between African Americans trying to become equal made our country split completely in half. Different rules and regulations were made for blacks to follow during school, work, and in other public places. The states further down South were very segregated and it also made it much harder for blacks to gain freedom. Many people viewed this time period through the phrase ‘love transcends race’.

Moral values were lost in the mid 1950s and lasted until 1968. African Americans were considered “lower class” compared to whites. There was a line that the colored race could not pass before authority. If blacks questioned authority, it was paid through crucial consequences. Segregation creates hatred, takes away rights, and kills family heritage.

Minorities in sitcoms were less portrayed in contrast to an accurate representation of the time period. Ironically, minorities in sitcoms were not always represented by minority actors and actresses. Sometimes makeup was used on a white actor so he could portray an African man. It was not until the 1950’s when African Americans were shown on television. African Americans were often portrayed as crooked people with poor English and less education.

Eisenbrey explained that deindustrialization and racial segregation are big things that affected inner cities. He explained how black people were excluded from a lot of things such as being left out of the great expansion, how they weren't able to get mortgages, and were kept out of suburbs. Tanner then goes on to explain how he thinks that the flight of the white people also affected this too. The white middle-class individuals would flee to the suburbs causing the taxes to be lower, the schools to be better, and the crime to be lower. They both hit many points on the schools they have in Baltimore.

Segregation in the south was at its highest in the 1920s. Segregation laws legally prevented any contact between white and black people in public areas for example, public transportation. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or the NAACP, was established in 1909 and is the oldest and largest organization for civil rights in America today. During the 1920s, the NAACP made great strides in the fight for equality; this organization was a vital part of the movement to abolish segregation. Segregation also extended to other public areas such as restaurants, medical centers(hospitals), government buildings, entertainment centers,etc.

Throughout the 1960s, a series of acts were passed in America to aid minorities in the areas of education, employment, public accommodation, and housing. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin in places of employment and public accommodation. Prior to this act, African Americans were banned or segregated in public areas such as restrooms, restaurants, theaters, and even schools. Segregation in schools had been a major problem since before Brown v. Board of Education in 1957 ruled that segregation was a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment. In the history of the United States there have been many social changes that have occurred. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s was one of the most significant and important movements that fought for the equality of all people. Even before the abolition of slavery in 1863, race was a contentious issue for the people of the United States. The rights of people were violated purely on the basis of skin tone, and this discrimination was more or less tolerated. Unfortunately many of the changes that the movement fought for received a response of bitter violence from many white southerners.

The segregation of schools based on a students skin color was in place until 1954. On May 17th of that year, during the Supreme Court case of Brown v. Board of Education, it was declared that separate public schools for black and white students was unconstitutional. However, before this, the segregation of schools was a common practice throughout the country. Coming from Will Brown being accused of rapping a young white girl, and to Eugene Williams having rocks thrown at him causing him to drown. These riots caused the United States to be even more segregated, due to unequal rights and no laws being created at the time to help and protect African Americans. During these riots there were cases of police brutality and whites being able to do whatever they choose to do, because they felt as if it was a justified reason to stop the African Americans from rioting.

In fact, most would argue that school segregation ended in 1954 with the Brown v. Board of Education. This assumption would be incorrect. Deep within the American society lies a new kind of segregation that is neither talked about nor dealt with. Segregation is a result of gentrification—the buying and renovation of houses in deteriorated neighborhoods by upper-income families or individuals—thus, improving property values but often displacing low-income families.
