Reading Reflection: Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson was born April 13, 1748 in Shadwell Virginia. His mother, Jane Randolph Jefferson, was a family claiming descent from English and Scottish royalty. His father, Peter Jefferson, was a successful farmer and a skilled surveyor. In www.Biography.com/thomas-jefferson, it was also reported that "Thomas Jefferson the third born of ten siblings".

Thomas Jefferson was born in Shadwell, Virginia, April 13th, 1743. He died July 4th, 1826 in Monticello near Charlottesville. During this time Thomas Jefferson was voted U.S Vice President, U.S. Governor, Government Official, Diplomat and of course U.S. President. He attended College of William and Mary. Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd President of the United States.

When Thomas was 29 years old, he married a woman named Martha Wayles Skelton. They had six children together but only two of them made it to be an adult.

Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 in Virginia to Peter Jefferson and Jane Randolph (Tucker). He was the third of ten children. He grew up in Tuckahoe, on a family friend’s plantation and began his childhood education there, studying Greek, Latin and French, and learned horse riding and began his nature studies (Tucker). A few years later, Jefferson’s father died in 1757 and left his estate to be divided among his two sons. Jefferson came into control of his property at the age of 21 (Malone).

Because of Jefferson’s enrollment in the College of William and Mary, Professor William Small’s thoughts on Enlightenment had influenced Jefferson.

Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson had comparable political methods of insight. They were important in the history of presidents. Jefferson and Jackson had faith in the common man having a voice in government, and did not need excessively control being given to the government. They were instructed men, with great information of the law like all presidents, and they trusted that a farming based economy was the way to America’s practical development. Thomas Jefferson's big idea was to get rid of Aristocratic Democracy to have a huge Democracy party.

However, Jefferson had huge accomplishments in his life. His bravery was marked by an optimism that other Founding Fathers lacked. What inspires people when they look back on Thomas Jefferson’s life is that the path he chose to follow was not necessarily the easiest one, but the one that he knew was paved with beliefs and morals he held close to his heart. He believed in liberty for all and freedom to love his God. He believed the citizens came first and the government is there to protect the people (Mummery).

It is understood that John Locke played a key role of influence on Thomas Jefferson. This influence can be seen through Jefferson’s writing on the nation’s founding document. This document is called the Declaration of Independence. John Locke, the English Enlightenment philosopher wrote his Two Treatises of Government to refute the belief that kings ruled by divine right and to support the Glorious Revolution of 1688 (Doc 1). This piece of political philosophy provided many explanations for the people’s rights and obligations to overthrow a corrupt government.

In today 's society, religious freedom is the freedom of the individual or community to practice any religion they believe in. It was often misunderstood that American colonist were in search of religious liberty, but in reality groups such as the Puritans and Pilgrims who left Europe to escape religious persecution sought the liberty to practice their own faith and often were intolerant of religious diversity. During this time, religion and the government went hand and hand. These leaders of the church were also leaders in the government and would enforce strict religious observance. In the beginning of Colonial America, religion and the government were inseparable and often leaders like John Winthrop would persecute dissenters who didn 't

He married a woman by the name of Martha Wayles Skelton. They brought six children into the world. The reason for my choice of Thomas Jefferson would be because of the many accomplishments that he had over the years of presidency.
