The Articles of Confederation was a document put into place by the Continental Congress on November 14, 1776. This document was put into place as the original Constitution. The Constitution is the document that states the laws of the United States government. This document also established three branches of government as well as their jurisdictions. There is the Legislative branch which makes laws, the Executive branch which carries out the laws, and the Judicial branch which resolves issues within the law.

The Articles of Confederation were developed to unite all of the 13 colonies as a nation, rather than having them all govern their selves based off of population. The Articles of Confederation also had been created due to the fact that the Declaration of Independence never stated the word, “nation” and this led others to believe after independence had been officially stated that the colonies would attempt to govern themselves. Furthermore, the Articles of Confederation were completely necessary in its making because the Congress had to lay a base government down for the colonies or an “example” government. They were made to keep law and order for the colonists but the government was unstable and it ended up catastrophic. The framers of the Articles of Confederation wanted to improve upon the Constitutional Monarchy of King George III by allowing less authority to one person or governing body. While the articles were a good starting point to build a strong government, they did not take into account certain things that are necessary for it to function properly, such as law enforcement and taxes.

The democratic principles, civil liberties, and separation of the federal and state governments present in the modern-day Constitution can all be traced back to the Articles. Both documents had similar purpose, but one was more stronger and efficient.
