Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement. Skills such as proper grammar and MLA format still need some adjustment. Even though I have things to improve, I was still able to improve some areas of my writing skills regardless even if it was a small improvement. In the beginning, like …show more content…
I also learned that when quoting, the author’s name must always be added in parentheses before the period. I believe my body paragraphs have gotten stronger and more influential because I have conquered these skills. Writing can be a difficult yet rewarding talent. I personally believe I have grown as a writer. Skills that were weak have become strong, and my strong skills have become even stronger. Having the opportunity to write a variety of different essay styles has challenged me to improve my writing techniques even slightly. Having good credible sources was another technique I learned and improve. For most of my work, I used to go to Google, and just type whatever it is I was looking for, and usually I do not end up with that much great information. Now I start searching for information in databases because they are credible and more reliable. Another step in writing an effective essay is the conclusion paragraph. The concluding paragraph summarizes up everything that has been discussed in recent paragraphs. Besides explaining if your argument was proven or not, it is the last piece of information the audience glances at. I have been taught how to efficiently summarize my own arguments. I have been taught to rephrase and restate my thesis statement with the concluding paragraph. Combining all of these elements will surely help end an essay the way the writer as intended it
For instance, the author tells how the poodle used to be a hunting dog and the reason why its hair was cut with a lions main was because then the dog could swim better. FINISH As the reader going through the essay each paragraph leads into the next creating a nice flow throughout the essay. I found that the organization of the essay was chronological and made sense as a whole. Each paragraph was evidence that supported the argument/conclusion. Although I thought there was too much evidence to support the argument the organization of the essay was spot on.
Some of my strengths I improved upon were hooking my reader into my paper, having enough information, and grammar. In high school teachers didn’t pay much attention to the grammar mistakes that I was making, during the English 101 class I noticed that grammar was being emphasized more, if I didn’t fix my grammar mistakes I would do poorly on all of my papers. In the diagnostic essay my paragraphs didn’t have a good structure. The introduction of my diagnostic essay was lacking because I didn’t mention everything I was going to talk about. At the end of my conclusion I wrote, “All of the weaknesses can be toned down if I just proofread my essays and think to myself if the paper met all the goals I was aiming for”, instead of putting this at the end of my sentence I would have put a solid thesis statement instead.
After reviewing "What is the Value of A Human Life" by Kenneth Feinberg an essay from NPR 's series This I Believe, I 've come to realize that this essay would be great for incoming English 1301 students to read and analyze. After examining the essay closely, students would see how Feinberg did and excellent job of providing a strong Introduction and Conclusion paragraph, including quotes from families of the 9/11 attack, and they will also see how Feinberg focuses on the main topic of the essay. Feinberg beings his essay by asking the reader the question, do all humans have equal rights. This is an effective way to grab the reader’s attention because questions are usually what the reader has in mind when he or she sees your topic. In the introduction Feinberg makes an argument stating that all human life should have equal value.
Initially, when I first walked into class, I had no respect for writing papers or the class. However, as the weeks progressed and the weeks went by, I’ve slowly gained the respect that English deserves. While it is still fairly difficult for me to formulate my thoughts and turn them into cohesive, well-structured sentences and paragraphs, I now know that most of what I write now is so much better than what my writing was when we initially started. It is through practice and revision that my writing has improved.
Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be a challenge for me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to transition my thoughts from my mind to the paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of required writing ended up helping me in numerous ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me for college and real life by giving me a foundation of effective learning strategies.
With the instruction given to me over the past few months, I have grown as a writer and gained confidence in my writing skills. When I
Over the course of this semester, I have learned a lot of different things about writing in English 101. My writing techniques and methods have improved drastically compared to what they used to be, especially my drafting. But other things like my grammar were at a decent level. I have become so much more efficient at writing than I have ever been in the past. With my current drafting process, I write my entire essay, read what I have written and add a little bit more if something comes to mind.
Writing is something that has dependably been an issue in my life. I do appreciate writing insofar as it's not scholarly, for example, research papers. I have dependably had issues with writing because of things like grammar and sentence parts. However, this semester has been a major partner to me. We have concentrated all these diverse issues and now feel I have enhanced much on these things yet at the same time could utilize more.
English has been difficult for me since I was first introduced to writing and I’ve never been exceptional at writing in general. In the past, I struggled with formatting and putting my words on paper. After taking your class, my writing confidence and speed has risen dramatically. Formatting essay comes easily to me now and I understand how I can improve as a writer. I know that what I am writing clearly reflects what I am trying to convey to the reader.
The comments from my instructor, the online material, my research, the online writing center and comments from other students in the discussion boards have helped me so much to improve my writing skills. In the writing process, the step that I feel I have improved a lot is editing, as I am constantly reading my writings and editing them as I finish them, over and over again before I publish them. The steps in the writing process that I like the most are finding a topic in the Pre-writing step and Drafting. I like having a lot of ideas floating around and think about which idea is the best and the most exciting topic to talk about.
Being born in a family that has a love for mathematics, I was not exposed to writing that much when I was younger, and as I grow up, I tend to stay away from anything that has to do with writing. Therefore, my skills were lacking compared to other people. Even though I did not have the worse grades in Writing class, I still did not consider my essays to be well written. However, the two writing courses in USciences, which are WR 101 and WR 102, have helped me a lot in strengthening my writing skills. Three of the papers that I wrote within this first year of college are: Literacy Narrative, Editorial, and Long Argument.
My Writing Experience In previous courses, my writing skills have been mediocre or just enough to pass the class. Throughout the duration of this course, I have written a variety of papers using different techniques and skills. Previously I would write assuming that the only audience would be my instructor. This course has helped me realize that there are many steps and skills involved with writing a well-organized and easy to comprehend essay.
There are other areas in my writing that I have improved on. I have improved on my grammar, verb constructions, use of verb tenses and organizational skills to make my writing flow better when reading. My overall progress in completing this ten weeks course was wonderful. Every steps and skills I learned in this English class will help me to improve on my writing skills in my other classes and will also help me in my future
Have you ever had to evaluate your progression in writing? I have made many improvements in my writing, but still need to continue to improve. I have learned many new writing techniques since my reflection paper; however, I still need to build off my strengths, focus on my weaknesses, and follow my goals for writing. I have learned and created many new strengths when it comes to writing. First, I have paper and paragraph unity; as a result, my paragraphs flow together.
I am very good at making sure my writing is precise when coming to commas, explanation points, periods, etc. My word selection is also strong, in which I use stronger words to make the sentences sound good, and overall the paper more well rounded. My weaknesses as a writer is sometimes being able to explain my points that make sense to others, or sometimes connecting different points together to make one topic. I believe my writing has improved in the last quarter in such ways as being able to use different types of inventions and different types of writing modes.
