Remember the Titans is a film based on true events that took place in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971. Two groups of people were forced together by the desegregation of T.C Williams High School. Despite the indefinite integration of the black and white students, the town was still living in a racially divided society. African American football coach Herman Boone’s arrival to T.C Williams further complicated things. In an attempt to tranquilize the escalating racial tensions he was given the head coaching position in hopes to placate the African /American community. This action by the school board resulted in the demotion of the schools seasoned, Hall of Fame nominee; Bill Yoast (Caucasian). Coach Boone suggests to Yoast that he stay on as assistant head coach. Boone tells Yoast “I think it would go a long way to smooth things over” Yoast initially refuses but is humbled when his team communicates their plan to boycott the school if he can’t be their coach. What follows is a series of racially driven conflicts and it’s up to Boone to get them to see beyond race and work towards a common goal as a united team as they leave for football camp. As a child Davis started playing football and started making headlines as a young man. Scouts started lining up to talk to Davis during his senior year of high school. Coach Schwartzwalder and former player, Jim Brown went to Davis’s hometown to recruit him to play for Syracuse. As the documentary continues the audience gets the understanding that racism is present in colleges. Not very many college have allowed black players to play for their team no matter how much potential that individual has and what they will bring to the team.
The Tennessee Titans are a professional football team in the National Football League. The Titans were first known as the Oilers and played in Houston until they moved to Tennessee and got renamed to the Titans after Greek mythology. While they were known as the Oilers, they played in the AFL, which was a separate league from the NFL. The Oilers won their first AFL championship in 1960 and the merge between NFL and AFL happened in 1970. They kept the name as the Oilers for two years while they were in Tennessee then they moved from a temporary home to there long term home in Nashville, Tennessee.
In Alexandria, Virginia, T.C. Williams High School football team went from being all white players to now being racially diverse. Coach Herman Boone forces the players to sit next to and room with someone of a different race (Yakin 2000). As the players are getting on the buses to go to their football camp, they segregate themselves from each other. And Coach Boone makes them intermix. Boone is determined to get the players to come together and work and play as a team.
Courage exists even in the midst of fear, but one cannot allow it to circumvent him or her from doing what is impartial and unbiased. Consequently, the warm and heart-stopping motion picture “Remember the Titans” depicts so eloquently the sacrifices one has to make to rear up firmly in support of their most cherished, morally sound views, and for some it initiates him or her to examine whether their principles are worth preserving. In the beginning of the movie “Remember the Titans” many black people are outside in the streets rioting, because a white store owner killed a black teenager. This act caused many black people to be furious, this shows that there are many racial tension around the high school. In T.C. Williams high school Herman Boone who is the black coach, coaching the offensive side of the team, was made fun many times due to his nickname. Coach Coon which is his nickname is an insulting word for a black person. During training in the football camp Gerry who is the leader of the white athletes became very close friend to Julius who is the leader of the black athletes.
Coach Yoast the former head coach of the Titans team got replaced by Coach Boone who had an idea to have a team with mixed race. All African Americans in the Community cheered him and this decision on. Coach new that even though he didn’t want to steal Coach Yoast’s team, he new it would be best for all the players. “You’re hall of fame in my book coach.” -Coach Boone.

As long as those that possess a white supremacist attitude, stories will continue to surface of unfair treatment and abuse. This movie portrays many leadership themes throughout the movie; authentic, situational, and path-goal. (AUTHENTIC) One player who quickly emerges as a leader is Gerry Bertier; standing out for his personality and traits. He is team captain, passionate about everything he does and wants the best for not only the team as a whole but also the players as individuals.
The desire to win in leadership sets a context where true beneficial aspects and lessons are learnt and taught. The lessons cover ethical principles and aspects of responsibility, respect, caring, fairness, and trustworthiness. These styles are based on the film Remember the Titans.’ The backdrop in the film presents itself in football and racism which are the aspects that clash with the leadership styles. Coach Herman Boone’s leadership styles manifest themselves based on his upbringing which provides a tough exterior.
Have you ever felt like you don't belong even though it's where you are supposed to be? In the film Remember the Titans the director Boaz Yakin’s shows how the football team felt that same way. Yakins showed how they got over it throughout coming together to build a community, through unity, acceptance, and through self-fulfillment. When the titans built their sense of community all the team players showed a different side to the other teammates, as the team was becoming more accepted and the team started to feel self-fulfilled. With the Titans working on coming together during training camp a sense of community is already being established as the team must find a way to work together.
The Civil Rights Movement was a very important part of American history in the time span of 1954 to 1968. The Civil Rights Movement displayed how the African Americans fought against the tremendous alienation that they had faced for centuries. Remember the Titans is a heartwarming story of how, after the strife of The Civil Rights Movement, both blacks and whites came together to form a football team and defeat discrimination between each other. The Titans, led by their team captain Garry, recovered their broken community from racism, to which strongly afflicted them. Garry was a good and fair captain for the team because he judged based on the ability to play football and not skin, he was very loyal to his teammates, and he had perseverance.

In the beginning of the movie when the schools are first integrated and are forced to be an integrated football team, the team members were not happy… and what made it worse was the fact that they had an African American coach. They were sent away to camp to learn to work with one another, and by the end they ended up over coming racial issues that they had. They found ways to gain entrance into the world of another
