Renaissance Essay: Life During The Renaissance

The Renaissance was a rebirth of ancient Greek and Roman culture. There was a renewed interested in classical texts. Key ideas influenced art, architecture, and new inventions. There was a renewed interest in Greek and Roman texts during the Renaissance. The first book was printed in Mainz, Germany in 1455.

Renaissance education was a catalyst for change in education unlike the Middle Ages where education was primarily based on theology. Renaissance education revived the study of classics, took on an individualistic approach, and focused on humanistic pursuits. The values and purposes of Renaissance education were to familiarize wealthy people to humanities and arts as well as prove society but over time, these values were challenged and transformed when it expanded to include practical subjects and was targeted towards a wider audience. The Renaissance was a time of social and cultural rebirth in Europe. It immediately followed the Middle Ages, lasting from the 1300s to the 1600s. It started in Italy and spread to the rest of Europe. It’s important because it taught us the power of looking into the past for inspiration and it showed us the importance of continual innovation. Two people associated with the Renaissance are Masaccio and Jan van Eyck.

The word Renaissance means “rebirth”. The social classes were “rebirthed” into a growth that moved the social structure of the society into totally different directions than what had it had previously been accustomed to before the Renaissance. The four social classes were: the nobles, the merchants, the tradesmen, and the unskilled workers and during the renaissance they took on a growth that went in directions that caused society to expand and the social classes to be redefined. The nobles lived on large estates outside the city walls and served as military officers, royal advisers and politicians. The merchants sought to protect their wealth by controlling the government and marrying to noble families.

The Renaissance was a period in time where everything started to change after the middle ages. During this historical period humans stared evolving by becoming smarter and inventing useful recourses that have changed the world. The renaissance was a life changing period which brought more joy to the world after conquering the dark ages. The Renaissance changed man’s view on the world by using Art, Science and Literature to make humans brighter and because of the rapid information they were gaining. Art during the Renaissance grew rapidly because of Leonardo Da Vici, and Michelangelo who changed the way people painted and drew by creating strategies which made art more interesting.

The majority of peasants in Europe eked out a living during the Renaissance by working the fields of the wealthy. Typically, peasant families would work the same piece of land together, and while in a growing number of cases these families were able to amass capital and buy their own land, those who owned land remained the exception rather than the rule. Renaissance men and women did not share the modern idea that working is inherently better than leisure, and although peasant labor was notoriously grueling, the number of holy days and feast days on the church calendar allowed them to enjoy up to half a year’s worth of vacation time during a single year. People had got rich quick and they were trying to show how rich they are every possible time. “As year followed year of prosperity, the new diffusion of wealth brought marked results… There was an epidemic of outlines of knowledge and books of etiquette for those who had got rich quick and wanted to get cultured quick and become socially at ease” (Frederick Lewis Allen, Only Yesterday, 1931). There was a leap from 75 to 283 in the number of Americans who paid taxes on incomes of more than a million dollars a year.

A few researchers may believe that the sole reason why the Renaissance occurred in Italy was a result of the copious amount of money they had, but they would be dead-wrong because it was a culmination of factors that made Italy the ideal place for the Renaissance to begin. The Renaissance was a time period that started around 1300s C.E. and lasted to the 1500s and began in Italy and over time spread to Europe (Frey 316). The renaissance was known for adopting new ideas, the study of humanism, breathtaking art, and the era of deadly diseases that spread rapidly from one person to another and killed people with in days. Although the Renaissance consisted of discovering new and exciting topics, a major outbreak occurred. This outbreak was known as the Bubonic Plague or the “Black Death” which had arrived in Europe in 1348 (Woodville).

Northern Renaissance Economy After the countless struggles and deaths of the Middles Ages a rebirth in Europe occurred causing economic prosperity. This period of rebirth, entitled the Renaissance, lead to a thriving wool trade in Flanders causing the Northern Renaissance to be economically sound and even stronger than the Southern Renaissance economy. Furthermore, even the economic leader in the Northern Renaissance, Jakob Fugger, had more power and, therefore, influence than that of the Southern Renaissance, the Medici family. To start off, Flanders, which is located in modern day Belgium, was an extremely wealthy area.

The Renaissance movement was specifically focused on the “rebirth” of culture. This included the revival of ancient techniques in the fields of art and literature, in addition to the growth and spread of the worldview of humanism (a raised importance of secular matters).

How humanism affected the Renaissance and Reformation The Renaissance was a big change in European society. It reintroduced classical culture and brought back their style of art and architecture. In addition, classical culture also established a new way of thinking; humanism. This unique style changed learning, art, science and politics for the better.

I’ve always found the Renaissance very fascinating since it left a huge impact on a our modern society to this day. Thanks to one of the famous artist like Michelangelo, who embraced his perspective through his paintings and showed the world how not everything is in black and white. When he painted the Sistine Chapel, it opened a whole new gate on what religion really represents for. To this day, I believe any artist was motivated and had inspiration from the Renaissance's wonderful artistic perspective of the world. Now, moving away from the aspects of art and into the prospect of famous literature, like Machiavelli’s famous book called “The Prince”, which showed many philosophies on how to be a ruthless ruler.

The renaissance was a time of art and rebirth. Many great artists appeared during this time bringing their own individual skills and talent. These artists were Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello, and Raphael. However out of the four, Leonardo was the most significant. Not only was he a great artist, but an inventor, engineer, and scientist.
